Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Spiritual Warfare – Understand What The Lord’s Will Is – Ephesians 5:15-21- Growing As Disciples

Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:15-21 (NIV)

Be Filled

Watch your step. Be very careful how you walk. Why is that? The times that you live in are filled with evil. You must be wise about how you live. I want you to make the most of your time. How will I do that? You can know my will by meeting with me in my word as you have been doing. I will show you my will and my ways as you study and pray through my word. The truth that is in my word will set you free so that you can serve me and bear fruit for my glory. I will show you the next steps that I want you to take in life. I will guide you to where I want you to go. I will give you all that you will need to follow and serve me. That’s exactly what I want and desire above all else.

Make sure that you think and act wisely. What do you have in mind when you say that to me? Don’t waste and misuse your time. What do you consider to be time wasters? I’d like you to answer that question for me. I know that I have wasted a lot of time when I have relied on my own wisdom, strength or guidance. I have gone off in the wrong direction to try to do what I was not called or gifted to do. Yes, you have. How did that feel to you? I felt very frustrated, discouraged and weary. I also felt weak and alone in all my efforts. But, you made a very important discovery didn’t you? Yes, I did. Tell me about it. I learned that it is very unwise for me to try to take charge and be in control of my own life. Yes, it is. Who then should be in control of your life? You are the one that I want to be in control of my life. I want to be filled with your Holy Spirit. I can’t live the life you want me to live unless I am filled with your Spirit.

What do you mean by that? If I’m not filled with your Holy Spirit I don’t feel like singing at all. Why is that? I’m too tired and worn out because of all my self-effort. Who wants to sing because they can hardly breath? If I’m not filled with your Holy Spirit I don’t feel very thankful either. Why is that? Instead of being thankful for all the great things that you have done through me, I’m more likely to be proud of my small and pathetic accomplishments. Oh and this very same self-centered pride makes it very difficult for me to be submissive to others in any way. So, what are you asking of me? I’m asking you to fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I can wisely live the life that you have called me to live for you. Do you believe that I will hear and answer your prayer? I know that you have been answering and will continue to answer my prayer. Yes, you are right about that.

Lord, help me to live and walk carefully in this world so that I am making the most of every opportunity that you give to me. Fill me Holy Spirit so I will be able to encourage others and give thanks to God for all that I have been given. Amen

Filled With The Spirit

Do you want to live and walk wisely in this world? Do you want to shine brightly for me in the darkness that surrounds you? Do you want to be able to think and speak and act wisely so you can be a bold and bright witness for me? Yes Lord, I want all these things to be true of the life that I am living with and for you. How can I live and walk wisely?  How can I shine brightly? How can I be a bold and bright witness for you in the darkness of this world? How can I make the most of every opportunity to serve you? By your questions and by my questions you should know something to be true. What is that? What should I know to be true? You tell me. I will try. I’m listening. Thinking and speaking and acting wisely does not come naturally to me. Just the opposite is often true. I naturally think and speak and act foolishly. So, under my own power, with my own ability, left to my own efforts I have little, probably no hope, of living wisely as your bold and bright witness in the world. It is wise of you to know this to be true. That sounds like a start to me. It is a great start. It is the best and only place to begin. You are acknowledging that you need my help to think and speak and act wisely. Yes, I am. That is very good.

How do you think I will make you able to think and speak and act wisely? You will fill me with your Holy Spirit. Your Holy Spirit will give me wise thoughts to think, wise words to speak, and wise actions to take. Yes, that is true. How will you know if you are allowing my Holy Spirit to work in and through you? What kind of thoughts and words and actions do you think will be flowing out of your life as my Holy Spirit works in and through you? I will want to serve you and others. Life will not revolve around me. I will encourage and spur others on. I will help and lift others up. My life will be overflowing with peace and joy. My heart will be filled with praise. I will give thanks to you for how you are working in and through me to make me a light for you in the darkness of this world. Yes, all these will be true of you as you allow me to fill you with you with my Spirit. I welcome that, fill me up, use me in your service. Yes, I am and yes, I will continue to fill you with my Spirit. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know that life does not revolve around me. Life is not all about me. I am not the center of the universe. I am not the focus of everyone’s attention. Help me to be filled with your Holy Spirit. Help me to think and speak and act wisely as I serve others. Amen

Do Not Be Foolish

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Therefore - Ephesians 5:15-17 - Do Not Be Foolish - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Therefore – Ephesians 5:15-17 – Do Not Be Foolish – Growing As Disciples

Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.  Ephesians 5:15-17 (NIV)

It’s About Time

You have been given time. Time is a gift from me. You will be wise if you are very careful how you live your life. You will be considered wise if you make good use of the time that I have given to you. Are you being very careful how you live your life? Are you making the very best use of your time? Are these questions that you have taken time to sit down to consider? No, I don’t think so. I may have vaguely thought of these questions as I have gone through life. But, I have never to take to sit down to closely examine how I am living my life and using my time. It’s about time, don’t you think? Yes, it is about time. It’s past time. But, it’s not too late. That’s good.

There is a huge problem however. What’s that? I’m pretty sure that I am not a very good judge of how I am living my life and using my time. Why do you say that? I have made so many mistakes. I have wasted so much time. If I have any hope of wisely living my life and making the best use of my time I will need a lot of help. I will need your help. Are you asking me for my help? Yes, I am asking you for help. My help will come to you in proportion to how well you listen to me. I’m not exactly sure what you mean. You will still need to take time to sit down to evaluate how you are living your life and using your time. You will ask the questions but the answers will come from me. How is that? How do I speak to you? What have I given to you so you can hear from me? You have given me your word. You speak to me through your word. Yes, I do. My word will help you to evaluate your life and how you are using your time.  Spend time with me in my word and you will grow wise in how you live your life and how you use your time. What else have I given to you? You have given me your Holy Spirit. Yes, my Holy Spirit is living inside of you. As you listen to the voice of my Holy Spirit you will know where to go and what to do. My Holy Spirit will help you to live the life that I have called you to live. My Holy Spirit will help you to wisely make the most of the time you have been given. Will you listen to my word? Will you listen to my Holy Spirit? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, help me to examine how I am living my life and using the time you have given to me. Help me to know and do your will as I follow and serve you. I want each one of my days to be wisely used to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Look Carefully Then How You Walk

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Will - Ephesians 5:15-17 - Look Carefully Then How You Walk - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Will – Ephesians 5:15-17 – Look Carefully Then How You Walk – Growing As Disciples

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV)

To Do List

I know that I have wasted a lot of time. I have allowed my life to be sucked into massive time wasters. I have been unwise. I have foolishly spent large portions of my life on what will be of no value and amount to nothing. I need your help. I need your wisdom. I need your strength. Why is that? I know that my life will not go on forever. I have a very limited amount of time to live my life on this earth. That’s right. I can’t afford to be wasting time if I want my life to amount to anything. What do you mean by that? I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to be busy doing what will amount to something that will be valuable for all eternity. I want to know and do your will. That’s good.

Why do you think you need my wisdom in determining how you use your time? I don’t think I will know how to use my time well without your help. Obviously, I can eliminate the obvious time wasters like spending hour upon hour watching television or searching the internet. There is little to no lasting and eternal value there. That’s right.  I know that you have good works planned for me to do for you. That’s right. I am quite certain, that those good works that you have prepared for me to do for you have seldom, if ever, appeared on what has been my day after day urgent “to do” list. That’s a very good point. If you always completed your urgent “to do list” you may still miss doing what I have called you to do for me. Do you know why that is? Yes, I have raced frantically through life trying to complete my urgent and daily “to do list”. What has not been on your urgent “to do” list? Taking time to know your will has never appeared on my “to do list”. Asking for your wisdom to know how I can better use my time has never been on my “to do list”. Asking you to help me bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name has never been on my “to do list”. Do you think it is time to reprioritize your “to do list?” Yes, I do. Will you help me to reprioritize my “to do list” so that I will be able to know and do your will? Yes, I will.

Lord, I have wasted a lot of valuable time. Forgive me. Help me to evaluate how I use my time. Give me strength to eliminate from my life what is wasting the time I have been given. I want to walk wisely and use my time well as I love, follow and serve you. Amen
