Watch And Pray So That You Will Not Fall Into Temptation

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 83 - Mark 14-38 - Watch And Pray So That You Will Not Fall Into Temptation - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 83 – Mark 14-38 – Watch And Pray So That You Will Not Fall Into Temptation – Growing As Disciples

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Mark 14:38 (NIV)

Watch And Pray

That is what I will do. What will you do? I will watch and pray. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. I will be vigilant. I will remain on guard. Why is this important? This is a sin broken world filled with temptations seemingly at almost every corner. Temptations come in all shapes and sizes. Temptations come in a variety of forms. Name a few temptations that you find most dangerous. There is the temptation to be proud. It is easy to think of oneself more highly than one ought. Out of pride flows a multitude of deadly temptations. Like what? There is the temptation to be seif-reliant and self-sufficient. There is the temptation to be self-satisfied, self-indulgent, and self-centered. That is the nature of pride, it makes one the center of their own universe. Everything revolves around a prideful person. A prideful person is so focused on themselves that they have no defense against temptation. Why is that? A humble person knows their limits. A humble person dares not foolishly rely on their own power and strength to resist temptation. They know that such an effort will certainly fail. What then will you do to resist temptation? I will submit myself to you. I will draw near to you. I will humbly rely on your power and strength. I will keep my eyes on you. You will help me to resist temptation. You will help me to fight against evil. What else will you do to resist temptation? I will steer clear of temptation when I see it approaching. I will flee temptation as it comes near me. I will run away from temptation as I run to you. You sound urgent, why is that so important? Nothing is more foolish than to hang out and linger around temptation. Temptation is alluring. Temptation is enticing. Temptation is powerful. I will not allow myself to remain in tempting situations. I will not allow anything to feed temptation in me. In every way I watch and pray so that I will not enter into temptation. That is very good. Rely on me, I will watch over you. I will guard you. I will protect you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will draw near to you. I will remain in your presence. I will submit my heart and mind and life to you. Help me to be prayerfully watchful so that I will not fall into temptation. Help me to quickly exit tempting situations when I see them approaching me. Amen

Keep Watch And Pray

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 228 - Mark 14:37-38 - Keep Watch And Pray - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 228 – Mark 14:37-38 – Keep Watch And Pray – Growing As Disciples

Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?  Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”                Mark 14:37-38 (NLT)

Watchful And Prayerful

Do you need any convincing? Do I need to be convinced about what? Do you need to be convinced that you will need to be watchful and prayerful if you will have any hope or chance at being able to resist temptation? No, I don’t need to be convinced. I have no doubts about my need to be watching and praying so that I will be able to resist temptation. Before we go any further let’s be clear about how you need to watch and pray. I’m listening. That’s good. I will ask you a few questions. Go right ahead. Who do you need to keep your heart and mind and life focused on? Who needs to have your undivided attention? Already you have asked me questions I would not have anticipated. How so? It is surprising that your questions begin with the word who. I would have thought your questions would have begun with the word what. Can you give me some examples? I thought you might ask me, “What do I need to watch out for or be on guard against?” or “Under what circumstances do I need to be especially watchful and prayerful?” Yes, those are good questions. Those are questions that you will need to carefully consider. They, however, are not the first and most important questions. Why is that? To that question, which is a good one, I will ask you another question. Do you think it is your watchfulness or your prayerfulness that will make you able to resist temptation? In other words, do you think it is your own efforts that will bring you victory? Now, I am beginning to understand. Tell me what you understand? My heart and mind and life need to be focused on you. As I watchfully and prayerfully set my heart and mind and life on you, you will make me able to resist temptation. You are the subject of my watchfulness and prayerfulness. Before now, before this very moment, I had thought that the subject of my watchfulness and prayerfulness was evil in the world. I thought something like, “Be watchful and prayerful so that evil doesn’t sneak up on me.” Don’t completely discard that thought. That thought is not wrong. But the priority of your focus needs to be on me. Your heart will be changed, and your mind transformed, and your life guided has you focus your full attention on me. Remember you have been told to submit yourself to me and the devil will flee from you? Yes, I remember that well. That’s good. You submit yourself to me by being watchful and prayerful in my presence, by giving your full attention to me. Do you understand? Yes, I understand. Will you be watchful and prayerful with me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not sleepwalk through life. I will be watchful and prayerful. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused sharply on you. I will withstand temptation with all the strength that you give to me. I will live the life you have called me to live with and for you. Amen

Watch And Pray

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ - Day 306 - Matthew 26:41 - Watch And Pray - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 306 – Matthew 26:41 – Watch And Pray – Growing As Disciples

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Matthew 26:41 (NIV)

Watch And Pray

That is exactly what I will do. That is exactly what I need to do. What’s that? I need to watch and pray so that I will not fall into temptation. No statement could be truer than, my spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak. It is a good thing that you do believe what I am saying to you. Yes, it would be a foolish mistake for me to think that I can stand against temptation with my own strength. How will watching and praying help you to stand against temptation? That is a very good question. It is a question you need to know how to answer. I think I know how to answer your question. I would love to hear your answer. I have more than one answer. I’m listening. Watching and praying will help me to see temptation approaching. I cannot tell you how many times I have fallen into temptation simply because I allowed myself to enter into or remain in a tempting situation. One strategy to avoid falling into temptation is to run and distance myself from it before it arrives. If I allow myself to linger in the presence of temptation, I am likely to fall prey to it. I must never knowingly allow myself to enter into tempting situations. Watching and praying will help me to avoid temptations before they become overpowering. That is one way watching and praying will keep you from falling into temptation. Yes, it is.

Watching and praying will help me to resist temptation in an even more important way. How so? Watching and praying will align my heart and mind and life with yours. Watching and praying will help me to want to know and do your will. Watching and praying will transform my thoughts and words and actions. I will want to think your thoughts, speak your words and take your actions. Watching and praying will motivate a passionate desire within me to do what is good and right and pleasing in your sight. The passionate desire you have placed in me to live my life with and for you will overcome the power that temptation once had over me. Yes, it will. Watching and praying will help me to remain dead to sin and alive to you. So, I will continue to watch and pray so that I will run from temptation and so I will have an ongoing powerful and passionate desire to live my life in way that is pleasing to you. That will be very good.

Lord, I know my spirit is willing and my flesh is weak. Only you can make me both faithful and fruitful. Reorder all my priorities and transform all my thoughts, words, and actions, as I watch and pray. Keep my heart and mind and life entirely focused on you. Amen

Be Watchful And Prayerful

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 184 - Mark 14:38 - Be Watchful And Prayerful - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 184 – Mark 14:38 – Be Watchful And Prayerful – Growing As Disciples

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Mark 14:38 (NIV)

Watchful And Prayerful

Are you being watchful? Are you being prayerful? Are you allowing temptation to sneak up on you? Are you allowing temptation to take you by surprise? Those are interesting questions. How so? What makes these questions particularly interesting to you? Your questions seem to indicate that if I am watchful and prayerful, I will be able to see temptation coming. Or, if I am watchful and prayerful, I will be able to recognize a temptation for what it is. And that, if I am watchful and prayerful, I will be able to resist temptation. Maybe even, If I am watchful and prayerful, I will be able to make a course correction that will steer me clear of an approaching temptation. Well, what does your experience with not watching and being prayerless tell you? If I am not watching and prayerless, I will regularly fall into temptation. I will be easy prey for temptation. That is true. That is not good. Yes, I know.

What else do you know about temptation? You will provide a way out of temptation for me. What does that way out of temptation often look like? That is where watchfulness and prayerfulness come into play. As I am watchful and prayerful, I will clearly see two things. I will see temptation approaching. I will see your way of escape. Often, seeing temptation coming and the way of escape available occur very early and quickly. What do you mean by that? If I am not watching and if I don’t immediately take your way of escape, I will likely, almost certainly, fall into temptation. I need to take the way of escape, that you provide, when the escaping is good. Yes, you do.

What do you know about being prayerful? Being prayerful will strengthen my desire and resolve to resist and run from temptation. Being prayerful is like deciding in advance that I will not allow myself to be overtaken by temptation. Being prayerful, is the way to submit myself to you and resist evil at the same time. I will never have the strength, in myself, to simply resist temptation under my own power. I am weak. You are strong. As I am in prayer, with my heart and mind and life focused on you, I will be able to resist temptation. Why is that? You will help me. You will be with me. You will give me strength to stand against evil and resist temptation. Yes, I will help you to stand against evil and resist temptation as you are watchful and prayerful. Thank you, Lord. That is what I will do, I will be watchful and prayerful. That will be very good.

Lord, I will watch and pray so I will not fall into temptation. I will draw near to you and submit myself to you in prayer so I will be able to resist temptation. I will steer myself clear of temptation when I see it approaching. I will come to you for your protection. Amen

Watch And Pray

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Mark 14:37-38 - Watch And Pray - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Mark 14:37-38 – Watch And Pray – Growing As Disciples

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” Mark 14:37-38 (NIV)

Wake Up

Be on your guard. Don’t allow yourself to be caught sleep walking through your life with me. It’s time to wake up. It’s time to watch and pray so that you won’t fall into temptation. Don’t think that you are so strong and able to withstand any temptation. The moment you think you are standing strong will be your weakest moment; when you are most likely to fall into temptation. Don’t think that my telling you to watch and pray is a helpful suggestion. It is a command from me to you. It is critically important that you hear and obey what I am telling you. The devil is like a roaring lion. He will be seeking those who he can devour. Who will he devour? He will devour the weak. He will ensnare those who are asleep and not being watchful and prayerful. That’s right. I don’t want that to be you.

How will you stay awake? How will you be attentive to me? How will you listen to all that I have to tell you? How will you keep watch so you can see all that I want to show you? I will need your help that’s for sure. I will never be able to withstand the devil and all his evil with my own strength. I will rely on you. I will draw near to you. I know that you will draw near to me. Yes, I will. I know that you are making intercession for me. You are praying for me every day as I follow and serve you. Yes, I am. In addition to drawing near to you I will resist the devil and all his evil. How will you resist the devil and all his evil? I will run away from evil. I will not linger around it. I will not wonder about it. I will not let evil capture my attention. I will not engage in it.  I will not let evil grab a hold of my heart and mind.  I will distance myself from people, places and circumstances that are filled with evil and temptation. As I am running away from evil I will be running to you. You will protect me. You will shelter me. You are my fortress. You are my deliverer. Yes, I am. You will make me able to stay awake. You will help me to be watchful and prayerful. Yes, I will.

Lord, give me strength to stand against temptation as I watch and pray throughout all the moments of every day. I will rely on you for all my strength. Show me what I need to see. Help me to hear what you are saying to me. Guide all my prayers. Amen
