Had Not Confessed Sin

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 87 - Psalm 66-16-20 - Had Not Confessed Sin - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 87 – Psalm 66-16-20 – Had Not Confessed Sin – Growing As Disciples

Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me.  For I cried out to him for help, praising him as I spoke.  If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.  But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me. Psalm 66:16-20 (NLT)

Confess

How will you make that a regularly part of your prayer life with me? How will I make what a significant part of my prayer life with you? When will you confess your sins to me? Why is it important for you confess your sins to me? What will happen to your prayers if you fail to confess your sins to me? I will confess my sins to you as I begin my prayers to you. I will not hide my sin. I will not deny my sin. I will regularly ask you to forgive my sins and cleanse my unrighteousness. Do you mean that you will generally confess that you are a sinner and that you will ask for my general forgiveness? No, that is not what I mean, not at all. You and I will review my day. I know that you will help me to see my sin when I come to you. I will make it my daily practice to confess my specific sins to you. Then as I confess them to you, I know that you have forgiven my sin and cleansed my unrighteousness. Yes, I will. As I confess my sins to you, I know that nothing will stand between us. I will be able to live in an intimate relationship with you. Nothing will prevent you from being able to hear and answer my prayers. Yes, that is true.

Why is it important that you confess your specific sins to me? It is important for me to identity and turn from my sin. It is important for me to ask you to help overcome specific sins in my life. It is important for me to know that you have forgiven my specific sins. It would be of little help and encouragement for me to have a vague and general idea that I have been forgiven of my sins. Then I would only be vaguely encouraged or vaguely grateful or vaguely joyful. What power would there be in vaguely knowing that I have been forgiven. What clarity would there be in my testimony if I could only tell others about what you had vaguely done for me? How joyous would my praise to be if I only had a vague idea of what you had done for me? No, just as in all my prayers, you want to hear specifics. It is only in specific prayers, that I can know without a doubt, that you have heard and answered me. That’s true. That’s it exactly.

Lord, thank you for your kindness, mercy, and love. Thank you for forgiving my sins as I confess them to you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayers. It is my joy to tell others about all you have done for me. Your praise will continually be on my lips. Amen

Cherished Sin

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Psalm 66:16-20 - Cherished Sin - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Psalm 66:16-20 – Cherished Sin – Growing As Disciples

Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me. I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me! Psalm 66:16-20 (NIV)

Confession

Here I am Lord. I have come to meet with you in prayer. There is something that I have not talked to you about much. What’s that? I haven’t talked to you about my sin. I know that I am a sinner. Even now as your follower I know that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, words and deeds. My sins are not in the distant past. I wasn’t once a sinner. I still am a sinner. I know that you have forgiven and paid for my sins on the cross. I know that you have cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. I know that my old life of sin is gone and that I am living a new life of righteousness in you. That’s right. Nevertheless, I still do sin.  I am not perfect. I have thought, and said and done what was not pleasing to you. I sinned in what I have done and in what I have left undone. I am here to confess all my sins to you. That is very good.

I don’t want anything to come between us. I don’t want anything to hinder my prayers to you. For that reason I will not hang on to anything that is not pleasing to you. I will not let sin captivate me. I will not let sin allure and entice me. I will not let sin catch me in its trap. I will take the way you have provided for me so that I will not fall into temptation. Sometimes, I will make missteps. I will go and do what I shouldn’t have done. I will think thoughts that are not pleasing to you. I will speak words that are not acceptable to you. I will turn away from sinful thoughts, words, and deeds. I will turn to you to live the life that you have given me to live. It will be my regular practice to come to confess all my sins to you. I will continue to live in your forgiveness and cleansing. That will be very good.

You do completely forgive me. You do fully cleanse me. You show me your love and kindness. Yes, I do. You have lavished me with your love. You have done great things for me. It will be my joy, with a heart full of thanksgiving to give thanks and praise and glory to you. I will tell others all that you have done for me. You have heard and answered my prayers. Yes, I have.

Lord, there is no doubt about it. I am a sinner. There is no hiding that fact from you. You and I know it is true. I’m here to confess all my sins to you. I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed. Forgive and cleanse me of all my unrighteousness. Amen

Heard My Voice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 163 - Psalm 66:16-20 - Heard My Voice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 163 – Psalm 66:16-20 – Heard My Voice – Growing As Disciples

A Pure Heart

I want to be able to pray prayers that you will hear and answer. That is a very good desire that you have in your heart. What do you think I want? I think we both want the same thing. You want me to pray prayers that you can hear and answer. Yes, I do. Have no doubt about that. What might hinder your prayers from being heard and answered? If I were to have an ungrateful and unthankful heart, I doubt that my prayers would be heard and answered. How will you make sure that you don’t have an ungrateful and unthankful heart? I will live a life of offering praise and thanks to you. I will remind myself of your goodness. I will make known your goodness to others. I will offer my testimony of your loving kindness to others. That will be very good.

What might also hinder your prayers from being heard and answered? If I lived a life of prayerlessness, I would not have prayers that are heard and answered. You won’t answer a prayer that is never prayed. So, I will pour out my heart to you. I will make my needs and the needs of others known to you, every day as I come to meet with you in prayer. That will be very good.

Is there anything else that might hinder your prayers from being heard and answered? If I cherished sin in my heart, I am sure that my prayers would go unheard and unanswered. What will you do about that? How can you possibly have a heart that is pure before me? That is a good question. Do you have an answer? Yes, I do. I must leave my old life of sin. I must confess my sins to you. I must turn my life over to you. You will give me a new life to live. You will cleanse me. You will purify me. Only you can make me pure and righteous in your sight. That’s true. Do you have any doubts about my ability to make you pure and righteous in my sight? No, I do not. Why is that? The blood of your Son has paid for my sin and cleansed my unrighteousness. He has made me able to enter your presence. His righteousness is now my righteousness. Now, I can give praise and pray prayers that you will hear and answer. Yes, you can. Will you? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, forgive my sins and cleanse my unrighteousness. Only you can make my heart pure. Help me to not cherish sin in my heart. Help me to pray prayers you can hear and answer. I will continue to offer prayers and praises to you for your goodness to me. Amen
