Delight Yourself In The Lord

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 69 - Psalm 37:3-7 - Delight Yourself In The Lord - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 69 – Psalm 37:3-7 – Delight Yourself In The Lord – Growing As Disciples

Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.  Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this:  He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.  Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Psalm 37:3-7 (NIV)

Desires

What are your desires? How have your desires changed since you started taking delight in me? What new desires do you have in your heart because you are now fully devoted to me? How do your brand-new desires compare with the old desires that were once in you? How confident are you that I will both give and grant you the desires of your heart as you take delight in me? How willing are you to wait patiently for me to fulfill the desires of your heart? Will you place all your faith and hope and trust in me? You have asked so many questions. I hardly know where to start. I will start by saying that I do take delight in you. You are so good to me. You have richly blessed my life. You have filled me with desire to do what is good and right and pleasing to you. You have made it to be my desire to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. If I am fully devoted to you, no credit is due me. Only you have given me a heart for you. Only you have made me want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Only you have made it my highest desire to know and do your will. These are the desires I have in me. Do I believe that you will grant me these desires of my heart? How could I not, these desires could have only come from you. They certainly did not originate in me. These new desires are nothing like my old desires. I no longer desire power or prestige or possessions. I no longer desire the acclaim and applause of the world.  All my hope and faith and trust are in you. You who began this good work in me will certainly bring it to completion. You have given and will grant me the desires of my heart. Yes, I will. Of that, I have not doubt. I will wait patiently for you to act as I live my live with and for you. That will be very good.

Lord, I give you thanks and praise for your kindness, and mercy, and love, for me. You have all my joy and gratitude for giving me a brand-new life in you. I take delight in your goodness. Give and grant me new desires in my heart that are fully pleasing to you. Amen

Desires Of Your Heart

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Psalm 37:3-6 – Desires Of Your Heart – Growing As Disciples

Psalm 37:3-6 (NIV)

Give And Grant

What do you want? What do you mean by asking me, “What do I want?” That seems like a pretty straight forward question to me? Does that question seem mysterious to you? Do you think my question has some hidden meaning? I’m not sure. I don’t know. Maybe? I will ask you another question. If you could have whatever you wanted what would you ask for from me? I have a hard time ordering off of a menu. Half the time I don’t know what I want. The other half of the time I order the wrong thing. How am I supposed to know what to ask of you? That is a good question. Do you have an answer? Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. I want what you want for me. What do I want for you? You want to give and grant the desires of my heart. What does that mean? You will form and shape and develop and grow desires in my heart. The desires of my heart will come from you as I come to know and love and follow and serve you. How do you know this to be true? That is what has been happening to me. You have been giving and granting me the true desires of my heart. For a very long time I wanted what would never satisfy my heart. I wanted comfort and pleasure. I wanted all the latest and greatest things that the world had to offer. I wanted power and prestige and possessions. None of these would ever satisfy my heart. None of these things would have brought me peace and joy and contentment. Now, I want the true desires of my heart. Now, I know that you will give and grant me the true desires of my heart. You do? Yes, I do.

What are the true desires of your heart? The true desires of my heart are to know and love you. The true desires of my heart are to follow and serve you. The true desires of my heart are to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. The true desires of my heart are to live my life with you now and forever. I want nothing else. I want nothing more. And there is something that I know without a doubt. What’s that? These desires have come from you. You have given and will grant me these desires of my heart. Yes, I will.

Heavenly Father, as I look back, I have to laugh at what I thought my heart desired. My desires were entirely focused on my pleasure and comfort in this life. Thank you for giving me new desires in my heart that you will grant as I love, follow and serve you. Amen

Delight – Desires

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Psalm 37:4 - Delight - Desires - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Psalm 37:4 – Delight – Desires – Growing As Disciples

Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Desire

Desire, now that’s a word that has caused me a lot of pain and suffering. Why is that? My entire life has been a long pursuit of one desire after another. I have been driven by desires. I have been led along by desires. I have been guided by desires. My heart has been filled with so many different desires. Never have I been content. Never have I been satisfied. The satisfaction of one desire has led me to crave another even better desire and then to lust after one even better that. I’m worn out chasing after my desires. I can see that.

Would you agree that there are good and bad desires? I suppose so. You have a very dim view of desires. Yes, I do. Where have your desires come from? My desires have come from what I wanted or at least what I thought I wanted. You might say that my desires have come from my appetites. Where have your wants or appetites come from? That’s a good question. My wants and appetites have come from the world and all that it has to offer. Name some of your past wants and appetites. I have wanted and had an appetite for pleasure, prestige, position, power and possessions. Once you have tasted something from your wants and appetites have you found that to be unsatisfying? That’s right. Your dissatisfaction has driven you on to pursue one want or appetite after another. That’s true. It’s like you have been chasing a mirage that you will never be able to catch. That’s it exactly. So, you want to give up on your wants and desires. Yes, I do. That sounds good to me.

I have something to say to you. What’s that? It is a good thing to give up on wants and desires and appetites that come from the world. None of them will ever satisfy you. None of them were ever meant to be the pursuit of your life. Now, I know that. Now, you are the pursuit of my life. I want to know and love you. I want to know and do your will. I want to walk in your ways. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. It is now my joy and delight to follow and serve you. Do you believe that I will give you new desires in your heart? Yes, I do. Why is that? You have already been filling my heart with new desires as I love, follow and serve you. That’s right. Do you believe that I will both give and grant you new desires in your heart? Yes Lord, I do.

Lord, for too long my heart has been filled with desires that come from the world. I have wanted all that it has to offer. No more. No longer. I want you. I want the life you have for me. I will delight myself in you. Give and grant me desires that come from you. Amen
