That The World May Believe

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 101 - John 17-20-23 - The World May Believe - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 101 – John 17-20-23 – The World May Believe – Growing As Disciples

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,  that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:  I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:20-23 (NIV)

Complete Unity

I know that this is your prayer. I know that this is your will. What is my prayer? What is my will? It is your prayer and will that we will be brought to complete unity. Who will be brought to complete unity? Your followers, your church, will be brought to complete unity. How do you know that it is my prayer and will that my followers, the church, will be brought into complete unity? Just before you left this earth you prayed this prayer. It was obviously of utmost importance to you. You are correct. Do you know why I prayed this prayer and why unity among my followers is of utmost importance to me? I think so. Go ahead, tell me your answer. Unity among believers will be a bright and shining witness for you in the world. In the world there is disunity and divisiveness of every kind. Love and unity amongst your followers is countercultural. Love and unity amongst your followers stands out like a bright light in the darkness of this world. When unbelievers see love and unity amongst believers, they will become convinced that you are who you said you were. When unbelievers see love and unity amongst believers, they will know that your Heavenly Father sent you into the world to be its Savior and Lord. Unbelievers will be drawn to you. They will want to turn their lives over to you. They will be drawn into the love and unity that can only come from you. That is true. That is correct. That is certain.

I have a few questions for you. I’m listening. Is my prayer and my will of utmost importance to you? Now that you know my prayer and my will, how will you live your life? What will you make sure is true of you? I will make sure that I am living in unity with others. I will be on guard against thinking or speaking or acting in ways that bring disunity into your church. I will not allow myself to become divisive in your body of believers. I will make sure that my love for and my complete unity with my fellow believers serves as a bright witness in the world. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for praying for me. Thank you for making your will so clear. I will live in unity with my fellow believers so that we can all be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. Help us all to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Key Question…  How are you living in unity with fellow believers so you will be an attractive witness in the world?

Living It Out…  Make sure that you are living in unity with fellow believers so you can be a bright witness for Christ in the world.

Filled With Love And Compassion

“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!  I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,  and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’  “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.  His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’  Luke 15:17-21 (NLT)

Love And Compassion

How will you be able to show love and compassion to others? That is a very good question, especially to ask me. Why is that? Showing love and compassion to others has not been one of my strongest points. Showing love and compassion to others does not come naturally to me. That, at least, is a good starting point. What is a good starting point? Knowing that you need help to be able to show love and compassion to others is a good starting point. Do you think that you will, by your own efforts, be able to show love and compassion to others? Will your love and compassion for others ever be enough, or even adequate? Do you think it is your love and compassion that I would like you to show to others? Now, I don’t know what to think or say. That’s alright, you can listen. I will do that. Have I shown my love and compassion to you? You have lavishly shown your love and compassion to me. I am living my entire life now and forever under your love and compassion. Your love and compassion have changed the entire course of my life. Your love and compassion turned my life around and rescued me from a life without you. It is your love and compassion that helped me to turn away from my life of sin in the world to live and walk in a new and intimate relationship with you. You are now my Savior and Lord. There was a celebration in heaven when I gave my life to you. That is all true. That is all correct. So, my love and compassion are being lavishly given to you. You could say that your life is overflowing with my love and compassion. That is exactly what I would and can say. That is very good. Now, I have a few questions for you. I’m still listening. Will you allow my love and compassion for you to spill out of your life to others? Will you allow my love and compassion to flow in and through your life to others? Will you love others with my love? Will you show others the same compassion that I have shown to you? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I am not worthy to be called your son. I have done nothing to earn or deserve your favor. Attempting to do so would be foolishness. Yet, you have demonstrated your love and compassion to me. You have forgiven me and accepted me as your child. Amen

Key Question…  How has the Lord demonstrated His love and compassion to you, even though you are unworthy of it?

Living It Out…  Be loving and compassionate towards others just as the Lord has been to you.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord is filled with love and compassion for you.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has demonstrated His love and compassion to you.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you be filled with love and compassion for others just as the Lord has been for you.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – John 17:20-23 – May Be One – Growing As Disciples

Let The World Know

Your life is a message. Do you know that? Maybe, I’m not sure. Could you explain what you mean? How you live your life sends a message to others. Your actions and the way that you conduct yourself will speak louder than your words. If the way that you live your life is not consistent with your words then what you say will not be believed or even heard. It will be as if your lips are moving but the hearer will not be able to comprehend what you are saying. In fact, they will have no desire to hear what you are saying. In their minds they will dismiss you and label you as just another hypocrite. The world has seen an abundance of those. That is not what you want to be. No, you are right, I don’t want to be a hypocrite.

What message do you want my life to convey? What do you think? I think you want the world to know about your love. That’s why you sent your son into the world. The message of His life was that through Him each one of us could receive forgiveness of our sins and be restored into a relationship with you, as your children. How do you factor into that message being spoken, heard and received in the world through your life?

Living in a restored relationship with you is changing me. How is that? Because I am your child I am in the process of becoming more like you. What do you think becoming more like me will look like? I think becoming more like you will look like love. If I love you, I will love others just like you have loved me. You gave yourself for me. I will give myself to others. You laid down your life for me. I will lay down my life for others. You came to serve, not to be served. I will become a loving servant to others. Instead of always thinking about my needs, and myself I will consider how I can love and serve others. What kind of message will your loving and serving others be in this world?

Living the life that you want me to live will stand out. It will get noticed. It will be shockingly different. Your kind of love and service to others is very rare in this world. People are filled with wonder when they see real love and sacrificial giving on display. They are attracted to it and want to know its source. But, I can’t live and love and serve others without your help. I really need your help. It is only you that can make me able to love and serve others. That’s the point isn’t it? What do you mean? You want others to see me in you. Yes, that’s exactly what I want. You will only be able to love and serve others, as I would, as you rely on me. As you rely on me my love will flow through you and enable you to be my witness in the world. Will you rely on me, and allow me, to send my message to the world through your life? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I want my words and life to be a testimony for you in this world. Let your love shine brightly through me as a light that gives glory, and attracts others, to you. Help me to love even those that others find difficult to love. Amen
