The Sacramental Life - Day 324 - Psalm 23:1-6 - You Are With Me - Growing As Disciples

The Sacramental Life – Day 324 – Psalm 23:1-6 – You Are With Me – Growing As Disciples

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,  he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6 (NIV)

Follow Me

Will you follow me to where I lead? Will you do what I ask of you? Will you allow me to take care of you? Before you answer, think deeply about the questions I have asked you. Can you think of how they are related? If you were to say no to these questions what you be the implications? What must you do if you will say yes to each of these three questions? I do want you to take care of me. I know that you can take better care of me than I can take care of myself. If I want you to take care of me, I must give up control of my life to you. If I were to continue to try to live a self-reliant and self-sufficient life, I would be making a powerful statement about who would be taking care of my life. Such a statement would clearly indicate that I would be taking care of myself and would want or need no help from you. We both know how foolish and unwise such a decision would be. How do you know how lacking wisdom and foolish it is to try to live without my help? I have been there and done that, I have gone down that road. I have suffered the bruising and battering and brokenness of trying to live a self-reliant and self-sufficient life. But you rescued me from that life. Like a God Shepherd pursuing a lost sheep, you found me and brought me back to you. You made me lie down in green pastures, beside still waters, so you could revive and refresh and restore my soul. You healed the brokenness of my life. You have been and are now helping me to live a righteous life that is good and right and pleasing to you. You are allowing me to be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. Life has not always been easy since I started following you to where you led me to do what you asked of me. I have had many twists and turns and ups and downs in life. I have walked through some deep and dark valleys that seemed like they were in the shadow of death. But you have always been with me. You have cared for me. You have comforted me. You have protected me. Your goodness has followed me every day of life. And yet, I know that the very best is yet to come. One day, I will come to live forever with you in heaven. So now, it will be my pleasure and joy to follow you to wherever you lead me to do whatever you ask of me. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know, without a doubt, that you are with me as I take every step in life. You are my Good Shepherd. You take care of my needs. You are with me to help me. You revive and refresh and restore me. You comfort and protect me. I will follow you. Amen

Key Question…  When has the Lord made you lie down, in green pasture like circumstances, to rest in His presence?

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Psalm 23: 1-6 – My Shepherd – Growing As Disciples

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6 (NIV)

Lead You

I am your shepherd. Follow me. I will lead you through life. Yes Lord, I will follow you. Where do you want to lead me? You have been bruised, battered and banged up by life. I will lead you to a quiet place where you can get out of the crowd and away from the noise and busyness of life. I will bring my healing into your life. You are weary and worn out. Rest in my presence. Drink deeply from the still waters of life. You have been hungry and thirsty. Come to me and you will never go hungry. Believe in me and you will never be thirsty. I will satisfy your life with good things as you live your life with and for me.

Don’t be too quick to leave this place. Make it your daily pattern to rest in my presence so that I can refresh your life and restore your soul. What do you want to do in me? How do you want to change me? What do you want to do through me? I will teach and train you to walk with me. I will mold and shape your life. I will lead you on the path of righteousness for my name’s sake. What does that mean? I will help you to think my thoughts. I will help you to walk in my ways. You will learn to follow and obey me.

The road ahead will not always be easy. At times you will be walking right through evil and darkness all around you. Enemies will be on every side of you. You will have no reason to fear. Why is that? I will be with you to help you. I will guard and guide your life. I will protect you. I will watch over you. My presence will comfort you. You will learn to rely on me. You will learn to trust in me with all your heart.

My blessing and anointing will be upon you. You will bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name. Goodness will follow you all the days of your life. There is one thing that you will always be able to look forward to with great anticipation. What’s that? One day you will come to live forever in heaven with me. With that knowledge you will be encouraged. With that knowledge you will be strengthened. With that knowledge you will keep moving forward with me. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, you are my shepherd. You have been meeting my needs. You have restored my soul. You have led me on paths of righteousness. You have been my comfort as I have walked through evil. I look forward to living forever in heaven with you. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 20 – Psalm 23:1-6 – I Shall Not Be In Want – Growing As Disciples

My Good Shepherd

You have definitely been that to me. I have definitely been what to you? You have definitely been my Good Shepherd. I am glad that you know that to be true. Tell me how I have been your Good Shepherd. I could start by saying that I have been like a sheep that has gone astray. I should add the words stubborn and stupid to that description. I have been like a stubborn and stupid sheep that has gone astray. How so? I have frequently wandered off and gotten myself into deep trouble. I have gone where I shouldn’t have gone. I have done what I shouldn’t have done. My own actions have left me bruised and battered and broken. Yet, you pursued me. You went after me. You would not let me go. It was your kindness and mercy and love that brought me back to you. That’s true. You brought me to a quiet place in green pastures, by still waters, where you could revive and refresh and restore my soul. Like a Good Shepherd, you healed my bruised and battered and broken life. Yes, I did all of this for you. You haven’t stop working in me. How so? You turned my life around. You fanned the flame of my desire to love and follow and serve you. You made me want to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to you. For that, I could not be more grateful and thankful. That’s very good.

But there is much more. Tell me about it. You are with me, to help me, I know that now. Life is full of ups and downs and twists and turns, almost like a roller coaster. You will never leave me. You will never forsake me. Even if and when I walk through a valley within the shadow of death, I will not be afraid. Why is that? You will comfort me. You will strengthen me. You will lead and guide me through all that life throws against me. Yes, I will, have no doubt about that.  I have no doubts. You have even been with me when I have been in the presence of those who are or once were my enemies. Even then, I have had your peace dwelling in me. Your blessing has been on me. I have felt your favor. Your goodness and mercy and love has been with me wherever you have led me and in whatever you have given me to do for you. Yes, I have blessed you. Yes, My favor rests on you. Yes, I will be with you to help you every day of your life. One day, I will take my last step in this life and my next step will be into eternal life in heaven with you. That will be a glorious day. Dwelling with you forever in heaven is what gives me joy and hope and peace in this life. I know where I am headed. That is very good. Yes, it is. Thank you, Lord, for being my Good Shepherd.

Lord, thank you for being my Good Shepherd. You have been guiding me throughout all of life. You have provided all that I have needed. You have revived, refreshed and restored my soul. You have been leading me on the path of life as I have followed you. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 100 – Psalm 23:1-6 – My Shepherd – Growing As Disciples

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6 (NIV)

Not Want

No truer statement has ever been said. What’s that? I shall not want. Why is that? You are my Good Shepherd. You have provided for all my needs. How so? Wonderfully so. You rescued me from a life without you. You took me off the path that led away from you. If I were to say that, “I found you”, I would be quite mistaken. You pursued me. I was like a lost sheep that you relentlessly pursued. You would not let me go. You would not leave me alone. You would not let me live a life without you. You found me and brought me back to you. You redeemed my life. You paid for my sins. You cleansed my unrighteousness. You filled me with your Holy Spirit. You adopted me into your family or maybe I should say, “You made me a part of your flock.” Yes, I did. You brought my bruised and battered and broken life to a quiet place. You made me lie down in quiet pastures and led me by still waters so you could revive, refresh and restore my soul. Yes, I did. You have been changing my heart and transforming my mind so I can think your thoughts, speak your words, and do your deeds. You made it so I could know and do your will. In other words, it could be said that you have led me in paths of unrighteousness for your name sake. You made me able to be a witness for you in the world. You made it so I could bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I did. All through the ups and downs and twists and turns of life you have been with me to comfort, guard and guide me. Even in the very shadow of death or in the presence of enemies you have made it so I have had no reason to fear. I have been able to hold on to you because you have held on to me. You will never let me go. No, I will not. You have abundantly blessed my life. You have shown me your goodness, kindness, mercy and love both now and forever. The best is yet to come. One day I will come to live forever in heaven with you. Yes, you will. Thank you, Lord, that you are my Good Shepherd. I will love, follow and serve you all the days of my life. That is very good.

Lord, you have been so very good to me. You have provided all I have needed in life. You indeed are my Good Shepherd. I will follow you to where you lead me. I will do what you ask of me. I will allow you to take good care of me as I love, follow and serve you. Amen
