Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Life In Christ – Galatians 3:26-29 – Clothed Yourself In Christ – Growing As Disciples
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:26-29 (NIV)
Different
You look different. I feel different. So, I suppose it is natural that I look different. I wouldn’t use the word natural to describe why you look and feel different. There is nothing natural about why you look and feel different. Why is that? First, tell me why you feel different. I feel different because I am different. How so? I have been made new. My old life is gone. My old life is like old stinky rags that have been thrown away, never to be put on again. Wouldn’t that account for why you look different? You have put on new clothes. Yes, I have put on new clothes. Of course, I would look different. Tell me about your new clothes. Well, let me first take a step back. How so? I need to think and speak about how I came to put off the stinky clothes of my old life. That is a good starting point. Yes, it is. How I am dressed starts with you. You adopted me into your family. You made me to be your child. You brought me to faith in you. You turned my life around. You set me on a new path of loving, following and serving you. Yes, I did. Something dramatic happened when I was baptized in you. What’s that? When I went under the waters of baptism my old life died. Yes, it did. The old stinky clothes of my old life were thrown away. Yes, they were. You gave me a new life to live. You gave me new clothes to wear. You changed everything about me. You changed the thoughts I think. You changed the words I speak. You changed the deeds I do. You made me righteous in your sight. Yes, I did.
What else did I do for you when you came to put your faith in me? You put your Holy Spirit in me. You made me alive in you. That is why you said that there was nothing natural about why I look and feel different. That’s right. What else did I do for you when I put my Holy Spirit in you? You gave me a hope filled future. You made all your promises available to me now. You made all your promises available to me for all eternity. Yes, I did. And your Holy Spirit living in me is like a deposit guaranteeing all that I have in you. Yes, He is. That is fantastic. That is supernatural. Yes, it is.
Lord, thank you for bringing me to faith in you. You adopted me into your family. You made me to be your child. You helped me to throw away the filthy rags of my old life. You gave me new clothes to wear. You clothed me in you with your righteousness. Amen
