Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4 (NIV)
Make A Name
Is that what you want? What’s that? Do you want to make a name for yourself? Do you want to be honored and respected? Do you want to be envied? Do you want to be recognized and applauded? Do you want to be sought after? Do you want to be the center of attention? Do you want to receive praise and honor and adoration? Do you want to be held in high esteem? Is this what you want your life to be all about? Your questions are making me feel sick. Your questions are making me nauseated. Why is that? They are too close to home. You know that at one time I have wanted every one of these things. Oh, I might try to deny it. I might even fool myself. I could never fool you. I have been filled with pride. I have chased after all that the world could offer. I have wasted time and talents and resources chasing after making a name for myself. None of those efforts will amount to anything of eternal value. If by some measure, I had made a small name for myself, it would soon be forgotten. If by my efforts, I made some minor accomplishment, it would soon amount to nothing. Why is that? Without you, I can accomplish nothing of eternal value. That’s true.
What is it that you want? I want to glorify your name. I want you to be praised. I want to be able to point others to you. I want to be a witness for you in the world. I want people to be drawn to you, just as I have been drawn to you. I want others to love you, just as I love you. I want others to serve you, just as I serve you. I want others to receive you as their Savior and Lord, just as I have received you as my Savior and Lord. I don’t want anything for myself. I want to be used by you. I want what you want. I want your will to be accomplished in and through my life. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I can see that. I will use you. My hand will be on you. I will work in and through you. You will bear and abundance of fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name. Thank you, Lord.
Lord, I have wasted a lot of time, talent and resources trying to make a name for myself. What a waste of effort that has been. That has not been your plan. Help me now to glorify you in all I think, say and do. Help me to live the life you have called me to live. Amen
