Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Life – 1 Timothy 4:7-8 – Train Yourself – Growing As Disciples

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

In Training

What do you think it would require for someone to train to become an Olympic athlete? I’m sure that it would take their all out, fully committed efforts to become an Olympic athlete. Give me some examples. They would need to devote their entire life to their goal. So, that would require rigorous physical training every day. Their diet would be limited to only what would be healthy for the care and maintenance of their body. No junk food would go into their mouth that’s for sure. They would also need to make absolutely sure that they were receiving the optimal amount of sleep and rest. Beyond that they would never stop studying how they might gain an advantage in both their training and actual competition. Then they would compete regularly against the best competition in the world so that they would continually be pushed to their limits. After all these fully devoted efforts they might reach their goal of being an Olympic athlete. You have a good grasp of what it would cost to be an Olympic athlete.

Of how much value do you think it might be to be an Olympic athlete? It would certainly be of value to be in great shape physically. I know that you want me to take care of my body. Yes, I do. Being an Olympic athlete might give someone a platform from which they could do great work in society. Yes, it might. Good health might help someone to be able to energetically serve you for a longer period of time. That’s also true. But at the end of a life how much value will there be in physical training? At the end of life there will be no value in physical training. Physical training adds value only in this life. Yes, that’s right.

What kind of training holds value in this life and for all eternity? Training in godliness holds value both now and forever. Yes, it does. Are you training in godliness? Yes, I am. As I meet with you daily in your word I am in training. As we talk together in prayer I am in training. As I follow, obey and serve you I am in training. As I worship you, together in the body of believers I am in training. As I live as your witness in the world I am in training. Yes, you are. What do you hope will be the end result of all your training in godliness? I want to know and love you well. I want to be changed by being in your presence. I want you to mold and shape my life according to your purposes and plans. I want to be the person you want me to be. I want to live the life you have given me to live. I want to have done what you have asked me to do. I want to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and your glory. These are all very good desires. As you are in training with me do you believe that I will accomplish all of these things in and through your life? Yes, I do without a doubt. You are right.

Rather Train Yourself To Be Godly

The Virtuous Life - Day 204 - 1 Timothy 4-7-8 - Rather Train Yourself To Be Godly - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 204 – 1 Timothy 4-7-8 – Rather Train Yourself To Be Godly – Growing As Disciples

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.  For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

Training

Here I am reporting for training. Tell me what you have in mind. I want to enter training with you. I want to draw near to you. I want to enter your presence. I want to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. I want you to mold and shape me into the person you have called me to be. I want to live the life you have given me to live. I want to live a goldy life that is pleasing to you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. So, your training will not be a lot of self-effort on your part? My training will require a lot of effort, but it will not be self-generated. My training will consist largely of my submitting myself to you. I am not the coach. I am not the trainer. You are both my trainer and coach. That is a good acknowledge on your part. My training will consist largely of coming to you. How will you come to me? I will come to you in prayer. I will come to you in worship. I will come you by meeting with you in your word. I will come to you in fellowship in your body of believers. I will come to you in service. In all these arenas you will train me, of that I have no doubt. That is very good.

How committed are you to enter in training? What kind of effort can I expect from you? I am all in. I will go all out. I am not entering into training lightly. I am not in this for the short term. This is not a sprint. I am in this for the long haul. This is more like a marathon. I will run on the course that you lay out for me. I will not run ahead of you or lag behind you. My heart and mind and life will be sharply focused on you. With your help, I will run fast and finish strong. With your help, I will complete the course you have laid out for me. Yes, you will. Yes, I will help you to run fast and finish strong. You will complete the course I have laid out for you as you remain in my training. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will enter spiritual training with you. I will allow you to train me so I will be able to live a godly life. Teach me. Train me. Guide me. I want to live a life that bears abundant fruit for your kingdom and brings glory to your name. Use me for your purposes. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - 1 Timothy 4:7-8 - Train Yourself- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – 1 Timothy 4:7-8 – Train Yourself- Growing As Disciples

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

My Coach

What would you do if you wanted to train yourself physically? That depends on the level of physical fitness I was trying to achieve. What do you mean by that? Well, there is a big difference between being in good physical health and being physically trained to function at peak performance. What level of training most appeals to you? Being physical trained to function at peak performance appeals the most to me. What would that require? That kind of training would require a well mapped out regime of rigorous exercise, healthy diet and adequate rest that would be best provided by a coach. You would need a coach? Yes, a good coach would make sure that each day’s training would build on all the prior training. A good coach would make sure that a healthy diet and adequate rest accompanied the rigorous exercise. A healthy diet and adequate rest would be just as important as the rigorous exercise so that my body would have a chance to rest, recuperate and rebuild. The exercise, diet and rest would not be haphazard? No, it would it would be well planned, under the close supervision of a gifted coach. At the end of a long training regime what would be your reward? I would be in excellent physical condition and able to function at peak performance. I would be able to compete at the best of my abilities. There is some value in that. Yes, there is some value in that.

What would you do if you wanted to train yourself spiritually? I would need your help. I would need you to be my coach. I might think of coaching myself in physical training. I would never think that I could coach myself through spiritual training. I would need you to teach me. I would need you to train me. I would need you to guide me. So, I would start off my desire to be trained spiritually by asking you to help me. I would ask you to be my coach. That’s a very good start. What would be required as part of your spiritual training? I would need to come to listen to you. I would need to begin to receive your guidance. I would need to begin to follow your direction. That’s good. What would be a good and healthy start? What do you think I would ask of you? I think you would ask me to leave my old sinful life behind so I could follow your coaching. That’s right. What do you think would come next? I think that you would ask me to come to meet with me in your word. Why is that? You want to speak into my life. You want to use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. That’s right. Then what? As you are changing my heart and transforming my mind you will ask me to begin to live the new life you have given me to live. How will you do that? I will follow you. I will go where you guide me and do what you ask of me. That will be very good. What will be the reward of your entering into spiritual training with me? I will have a new life to live with you both now and forever. Yes, you will.

Lord, in the past I have spent a great deal of time and energy in physical training. This training holds value only for a very short time in this life. Help me now to enter training in godliness which will hold promise both in this life and in the everlasting life to come. Amen
