Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father- Deuteronomy 8:1-3 – Being Careful – Growing As Disciples

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers. Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Deuteronomy 8:1-3 (NIV)

Being Careful

Are you being careful? Am I being careful in what way? Are you carefully hearing and following my word? I’m not sure. What would that mean? I am glad that you are asking me your question. Why is that? It is good for you to not assume that you are being careful. If you are to be careful you must be careful in two different ways. Not you have piqued my curiosity. That’s good.

First, you must be careful in hearing my word. That means you must know my word. You must listen to my word. You must make my word a priority in your life. You must take my word into your heart and mind and life. Do you know how you will take my word into your heart and mind and life? Yes, I do. I’m listening. I will meet daily with you in your word. I will read your word. I will study your word. I will meditate on and memorize your word. I will pray your word. I will speak your word. I will teach your word. I will grab a hold of your word so word will grab a hold of me. In every way, I will let your word dwell in me richly. Your word will be on my mind. Your word will be in my heart. Your word will come out of my mouth. These are the ways in which I will be careful to really hear your word and listen to all that you have to say to me. That will be very good.

Next, you must also be very careful in following my word. It will not be enough for you to carefully hear my word. Only hearing my word will not change your heart, transform your mind or guide your life. If you truly want my word to dwell in you richly you must put into practice all that I will teach you from my word. Will you follow my word? Will you obey my word? Will you put my word into practice? Yes Heavenly Father, I will. That will be very good.

As you hear my word and put it into practice, I will bless your life. You will go where I guide you. You will do what I ask of you. You will humbly pass all the tests of life that lie ahead of you. You will be guarded and guided, strengthened and sustained by my word. That is what I want. That is what I will do. I will hear and follow your word. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, you have my full attention. I’m leaning in to hear all you want to say to me. My heart and mind and life are committed to hearing and obeying your word. Guard and guide, strengthen and sustain my life my life by your word as I follow you. Amen
