Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Virtuous Life – Day 235 – 2 Timothy 4-6-8 – Fought The Good Fight – Growing As Disciples

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.   2 Timothy 4:6-8 (NIV)

Finish Strong

What will help you to fight hard, run fast, and finish strong as one of my followers? That is a very good question. Do you have an answer? I know what won’t help me to fight hard, run fast, and finish strong as your follower. What’s that? A strong will and determined effort based on my own will power and strength will not help me. Why is that? I am weak. I may have the best of intentions. I may have the strongest of desires. I may make the firmest commitment and clearest resolution. But without your power and strength, I will certainly fail in fighting hard, running fast, and finishing strong. Why is that? I will face strong head winds. The world, my own flesh, and even the devil and all his evil will rise up and bring storms against me. I may be blown off course. I might be stuck in a rut. I may be stopped dead in my tracks. Without your help, I will certainly become discouraged, depressed, and defeated. Only you can keep me moving forward. Only you can empower me to fight hard, run fast, and finish strong. It is wise that you know this to be true. It has never been my intent that you live your life under your own power and strength. You have my spirit living and dwelling inside of you. I will spur you on. I will strengthen you. I will lift you up. I will keep you from becoming discouraged, depressed, and defeated. Will you rely on my help? Will you ask me for what you want and need? Will you be fully devoted to me? Will you live in an intimate relationship with me? Will you keep your heart and mind and life focused on me? Will you long for my appearing? Will you pour yourself out in serving me? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will surely have everything you need from me to fight hard, run fast, and finish strong. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will fight hard and run fast so that I can finish strong as your follower. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you as I long for your appearing. Help me to live a life that is a bold and bright witness for you. Help me to live without any regrets. Amen

Finished The Race

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - 2 Timothy 4:7-8 - Finished The Race - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – 2 Timothy 4:7-8 – Finished The Race – Growing As Disciples

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

Run Well

That is what I want. What’s that? I want to fight hard. I want to run well in my life of faith with you. I want to stay on course. I want to finish strong. I want to cross the finish line and receive the crown of righteousness that you have in store for me. Those are very good desires that you have in your heart and on your mind.

How will you fight hard and run well? I will stay in training. I will allow you to teach and train me. I will allow you to guard and guide my life. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. I will listen to the soft whisper of your voice. I will keep in step with where you lead me. I will be ready to do what you ask of me. You will have my full attention. I will draw near to you as you draw near to me. I will meet with you in your word. I will allow your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. I know that you began a good work in me. I know that I am the work of your hands. I know that you are molding and shaping my life every day as I love, follow and serve you. Yes, I am.

How will I encourage you to fight hard and run well? You will bring people into my life to spur me on in my faith. You will plant me in a body of believers so that I can follow others as they follow you. You will work in and through me. You will allow me to shine brightly in the world for you. You will use me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. You will use my life as an example for others to follow as I follow you. You will give me opportunities to spur others on in their faith. You make sure I know that you are always with me to help me. You will make me able to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your will. Yes, I will. In every way, I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. Then you will run well. Then you will keep the faith. Then you will finish your race and receive the crown I have in store for you. I eagerly look forward to that day when I will cross that finish line and see you face to face. That is very good.

Lord, I want to fight hard. I want to run well. I want to run the race you have marked out for me. I will go where you guide me. I will do everything you ask of me. Help me to keep my heart and mind and life focused on you so I can cross the finish line with you. Amen

Fought The Good Fight

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Discipleship - 2 Timothy 4:7-8- Fought The Good Fight - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Discipleship – 2 Timothy 4:7-8- Fought The Good Fight – Growing As Disciples

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NLT)

Faithful

I want to remain faithful. I want to fight the good fight of faith. I want to run well on the course that you have laid out for me. I want to receive the prize that you have waiting for me on the day of your return. I eagerly await the day that I will come to live forever in heaven with you. Those are very good desires.

Do you have any questions? Do you have any concerns? Yes, I do. Ask me your questions. Tell me your concerns. If being faithful depends entirely on me I have big concerns. Why is that? I’m sure that I will need your help to remain faithful. I certainly will need your help to fight the battles I will face in life. I know for sure that I will need your help to run well the course that you have laid out for me. Yes, you will need my help. You will not be able to fight the battles of life with your own strength. You will not be able to run well without relying on me. There should be no doubt in your mind about two things. What’s that? You will need my help and you will have my help. That’s good.

What will you do to rely on me? What will you do because you will need my help? How often do you think you will need my help? How long can you go without relying on me? Those are all very good questions. I can’t go one step in my race of faith without your help. I can’t fight one battle without relying on you. The second I start relying on myself to fight strong or run well I will be in deep trouble. I will be heading for discouragement and defeat. That’s right. I will come to you to ask for your help. How often? I will come and ask for your help through every moment of every day. I will live constantly dependent how you. I will keep my heart and mind and eyes and life focused on you as I go through all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life. I will hold on to you as you hold on to me. You will help me to fight strong, run well and keep the faith. You will make me able to receive the prize that you have waiting for me in heaven. Yes, I will. That’s very good.

Lord, I will keep my eyes on you as I fight the good fight and run the race that you have laid out before me. Help me to remain faithful. Help me to fight strong. Help me to run well. Help me to keep all my faith in you. I eagerly look forward to your return. Amen
