Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Revelation 3:19-20 – Knock – Open – Growing As Disciples

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:19-20 (NIV)

Noise

Are you listening to me? Can you hear my voice? Are you distracted by all that is in the world? Are you preoccupied with all the sights and sounds and noise of the world? Are you so very busy pursuing all that the world offers you? Does the world have your ear? Does the world have your mind? Does the world have your heart? I am knocking on the door of your heart. Will you listen? Can you hear me? Will you let me in?

Leave your independence. Let go of your self-reliance. Get rid of your stubbornness. Humble yourself. Receive my correction and discipline. Accept my rebuke. I love you. I have your very best in mind. Repent of your sins. Leave the darkness behind and walk in the light with me. I have a completely new life for you. Will you turn your life away from the world? Will you open your heart to me? Yes, Lord, I hear your voice. I know that you are knocking on the door of my heart. I have been busy. I have been distracted. I have been chasing after all that the world had to offer me. I have been pursuing what will amount to nothing. Forgive my sin. Cleanse my unrighteousness. I want you. I want the life that you have for me to live.

I’m here right now. I have set aside this time and this place to meet with you. I have quieted myself before you. You have my full attention. My heart and mind and life are focused on you. Let nothing distract me. The door of my heart is completely open to you. Speak to me Lord. I am listening. You have my full attention. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to know you. I want to do your will. I want to walk in your ways. I want to live my life according to your purpose and plan. Keep on coming to me. Keep on listening to me. Keep on opening the door of your heart to me. I will speak to you. We will live in close and intimate fellowship with each other. That is the desire of my heart. That is all that I want, far above all else. That is very good.

Lord, I want nothing more passionately than to live in intimate fellowship with you. I welcome your loving rebukes and discipline in my life. I will earnestly repent of my sins. I will listen attentively to your knocking and open the door of my life completely to you. Amen

I Will Come In

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Revelation 3:20 - I Will Come In - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Revelation 3:20 – I Will Come In – Growing As Disciples

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

You Started This

You started this. I started what? You started my relationship with you. I would like to hear you say a lot more about that. You pursued me. I’m embarrassed and sad to say that I had no interest in you. My heart and mind and life were busy. My heart and mind and life were distracted. How so? I was pursuing what interested me. I was living the life I wanted to live. I lived for myself. I was self-sufficient, self-indulgent and self-reliant. I thought that I didn’t need or want anything from anybody, including you. I know how that sounds now. How does that sound? It sounds pathetic. It sounds ridiculous. It sounds arrogant. It is hard for me to admit. It is difficult for me to confess. I was desperately in need of you and I did not know it. That’s true.

That’s not the end of the story. I’m thankful that there is much more to the story. Let me hear the rest of the story. You would not let me go. You kept on pursuing me. You kept on reaching out to me. You kept on trying to get my attention. You knew it was just a matter of time before I would turn to you. Why is that? Your word says that the wages of sin is death. I was living a dark and sinful life. It was just a matter of time before I would begin to receive the full wages of the life I was living. My wages were pain and suffering. My way of life left me bruised and battered and broken. My course left me with no purpose and meaning or hope. Peace and joy were out of question. Finally, I reached rock bottom. You knew I would. Yes, I did. You knew that I would cry out to you. You knew that I would ask you for help. Yes, I did.

You were not far away from me. You were right next to me. You did not judge and condemn me, when I cried out to you. No, I did not. You came right into my heart and mind and life when I confessed my sin and turned my life over to you. Yes, I did. You had been waiting. You had been knocking. You were waiting for me to invite you into my heart and mind and life. Yes, I was.

What about now? What do you mean? I want to come into your heart and mind and life every day. I want us to live in an intimate relationship together. I want us to live in a constant dialogue of prayer together. What do you want? I want the very same thing. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would hear than your voice. There is no person I would rather talk to than you. So, you will keep on welcoming me into your heart and mind and life? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I hear you knocking. You have gotten my full attention. I clearly hear your voice. I am listening attentively to you. I am opening the door to you. I welcome you to come into my heart and mind and life. Help me to live in an intimate life of prayer with you. Amen

Hears My Voice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Revelation 3:20 - Hears My Voice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Revelation 3:20 – Hears My Voice – Growing As Disciples

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

Open The Door

Are you standing outside the door of my heart? Are you waiting for me to hear your voice? Do you want me to open the door to intimate fellowship with you? I’m sure that you know the answers to those questions. There is nothing I want more than to live in intimate fellowship with you. Do you think that you will invite me into your heart one time? Do you think that you will hear and answer my call today for tomorrow? Do you think that you will open the door to intimate fellowship with me once and for all time? I’m not sure what you are asking me. You have invited me into your heart. You have opened the door to intimate fellowship with me. You do hear my voice speaking to you. What about today? What about right now? What about tomorrow and the next day after that? Will you keep asking me into your heart? Will you keep listening to my voice? Will you keep opening your heart to intimate fellowship with me? Yes Lord, I will. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. I want to live in intimate fellowship with you everyday. I want to hear your voice speaking to me everyday. I will open the door to intimate fellowship with you every day.

How will you keep on opening the door of your heart to me? How will you keep listening to my voice? How will you keep living in intimate fellowship with me? I knew those questions were coming. They are very important questions. I know. It is easy for me to become distracted. It is easy for me to wander away from intimate fellowship with you. It is easy for me to be distracted from being able to hear your voice. Why is that? This world that I live in is a busy and noisy place. It is full of distractions. It is full of alluring enticements that cry out for my time and attention. I am constantly being bombarded with the thoughts and values and opinions of this world. If I am not very careful I will become just like the world and all those who live in it. You are in this world, but you are not of this world. I know. That is why I must make time and set apart a special place where I can meet with you. As I meet with you, I will be opening my heart afresh to you. As I meet with you, I will be listening to all that you have to say to me. As I meet with you, I will be enjoying the intimate fellowship you want me to have with you. Yes, you will. That is what I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not leave you standing outside the door of my heart. I hear you knocking. I hear you speaking. I am listening to your voice. I will invite you into my heart. I want to live in intimate fellowship with you. Come in now. Amen
