Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 234 – Isaiah 30-21 – This Is The Way You Should Go – Growing As Disciples

Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. Isaiah 30:21 (NLT2)

My Voice 

Will you listen to my voice? Will you follow my direction? Will you receive my guidance? Yes, I will listen to your voice. Yes, I will follow your direction and receive your guidance. What steps will you take to hear my voice, follow my direction, and receive my guidance? Steps? I’m not quite sure what you mean. Let me ask you a few questions. Go ahead, I’m listening.

What will hinder or help your ability to hear from me? If I race through the busyness of life and allow myself to be overwhelmed by its’ noise, I will never be able to hear from you. I need to slow down and withdraw from the noise and busyness of life so I can hear from you. I need to quiet myself before you. I need to come to rest in your presence. I need to be still before you. Then I need to meet with you in your word. Oh, and another thing, I also need to submit my heart and mind and life to you. Then as I do these things, I will be placing myself in a position to hear from you. I do think one other prerequisite, to hearing from you is also important. What’s that? I need to decide in advance that I really will follow and obey you. Why is that important? If I am unwilling to follow and obey you, how attentively could I possibly be listening to you. I can’t imagine going to all this effort to hear from you if I wasn’t really willing to follow your direction or receive your guidance. You have a good point. There is something else that I suspect to be true. What’s that? If I am not willing to follow and obey you, it is very unlikely that you will give me direction or guidance or counsel that I won’t follow anyway. Although, I am not positive on this point. Why is that? I know that I have not always followed your direction and guidance. Yet, you have given it to me anyway. Why would I do that? You want me to learn the importance of hearing and following and obeying you. You want me to know that there are consequences to hearing and obeying or to hearing and not obeying you. Yes, that is true. I want you to learn to hear and follow and obey me. I want you to learn to listen attentively to my voice. That I will do. That will be very good. 

Lord, no longer will I fail to listen to your voice. You have my full and undivided attention. I will quiet myself before you. I will remove myself from the noise and busyness of life. I will hear you. I will follow you. Guide my life according to your will, purpose, and plan. Amen

Key Question…  When has the Lord guided you into something new, unexpected, and wonderful?

Living It Out… Listen attentively to the voice of the Lord guiding you through life.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the voice of the Lord will guide you through life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are listening to the voice of the Lord guiding you through life.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you follow the voice of the Lord guiding you through life.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 259 – Isaiah 30:21 – Hear A Voice – Growing As Disciples

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)

Your Voice

That is what I want to hear. What do you want to hear? I want to hear your voice speaking to me. Why are you so determined to hear my instruction and receive my guidance? I want to know if I should stop or start or turn to the right or to the left, move forward or step backward. I don’t want to waste time. I don’t want to take missteps. I would like to go where you guide me so that I can do what you ask of me. In other words, I want to know and do your will. That is very good. But there is far more. Like what? I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to walk through life with you. That will be very good.

What will be necessary for you to hear from me? I will need to be listening to you. That seems quite obvious doesn’t it? Yes, it does. How will you go about listening to me? First, of all I will draw near to you. I will quiet myself before you. I will withdraw from the noise and busyness of life. I will separate myself from what will distract or preoccupy me from focusing my heart and mind and life on you. I will give you my full attention. I will focus myself fully on you. I will set apart a specific time and place to meet with you. How often? Every day. Not a day will go by that I won’t need to hear from you.  That sounds like a very good start.

How will you meet with me? I will meet with you in prayer. I will meet with you in your word. I will meet with you in worship. I will meet with you in service. I will meet with you as I gather together in your body of believers. That will be very good.

What do you expect to hear from me? I expect that you will guard and guide me. I expect that you will empower and strengthen me. I expect that you will revive and refresh and restore me. I expect that you will lift me up and encourage me. I expect that you will teach and train me. I expect that you will mold and shape me. I expect that you will work in and through me. Why will I do all these things for you? You love and care for me. You lived and died for me. You are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and Father. I am your child. You have adopted me into your family. Yes, I am all of these things to you. Yes, I will do all of these things for you. Listen to me, I will speak to you. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, at times, I have been very hard of hearing. I have been distracted. I have been preoccupied. I have been frantically busy and wrongly focused. Help me to slow down and quiet myself so I can hear you. Help me to hear your voice guiding me through life. Amen

Key Question… How are you slowing down and quieting yourself before the Lord so you can hear from Him?

Living It Out… Listen attentively to the Lord’s voice guiding you through life.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will guide you through life as you listen to His voice.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has guided you through life as you listened to His voice.

Your Voice

That is what I want to hear. What do you want to hear? I want to hear your voice speaking to me. Why are you so determined to hear my instruction and receive my guidance? Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Guidance – Isaiah 30:21 – Your Ears Will Hear A Voice – Growing As Disciples

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)  

The Way

Are you expecting that I will speak to you? Are you listening attentively to my voice? Are you waiting for my instructions? Are you trusting in my guidance? Do you believe that I will lead you on your journey through life? I know that you will speak to me. I know that you will guide me on my journey through life. I am counting on your guidance and waiting for your instruction. You have said that you will draw near to me as I draw near to you. That’s right. You want me to come to you in prayer. You want me to be taught by you. You want me to receive your guidance. These things are also true.

Why do you expect to hear from me? Why are you so certain that I will speak to you? Prayer to you is a dialogue, not a monologue. That’s right. Prayer is just as much listening as it is talking to you. Yes, it is. You want me to talk to you. Yes, I do. You also want me to listen to you. Yes, I do. I can’t receive your instruction or follow your guidance if you do not speak to me. That’s pretty obvious isn’t it? Yes, it is.

Why are you so willing to come to meet with me? Why are you so determined to hear from me? Nothing brings me greater joy than to be in your presence. Nothing is more encouraging than to hear you speaking to me. Nothing is more certain than your desire for me to live in a close and intimate relationship with you. So, I come and sit at your feet. I come to wait in your presence. I come to listen attentively to your voice. I am reminded of times when I have searched for something with the certainty that I am looking in the right place. The intensity of my search is strongest when I am certain that I will find what I am looking for if I don’t give up. I know with certainty that you will speak to me if I keep on listening and don’t give up. Yes, I will.

What do you want to hear from me right now? I want to hear whatever you have to say to me. You can tell me where to go. You can tell me what to do. You can tell me what you want to do in and through my life. You can tell me how you want to use me for your purposes. You can teach me. You can guide me. You can correct me. You can encourage and strengthen me. You know what I need to hear. You know that I am listening attentively to you. Yes, I do.

Lord, I will patiently wait, watch, and listen for your guidance and direction. Teach me Lord to walk and live according to your will and ways. It is my desire to live my life fully for you. Use me according to your purposes and plans. Amen
