Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 258 – Isaiah 64:8- You Are The Potter – Growing As Disciples

Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

Potter

I am so glad that you are the potter and I am the clay. Why is that? The pressure is off. It is you who are molding and shaping my life. You will make me into your masterpiece. Yes, I am and yes, I will. That is such good news. I would make a terrible potter, especially of myself. I would be sadly misshapen if I had to make myself into a masterpiece. There would be no hope. My efforts would be comical and humorous if they weren’t so sad. So, thank you, that I am the work of your hands. You are welcome.

You do have a role in my molding and shaping you. What is my role? First, I will say that you must allow me to mold and shape you. You must be ready and willing for me to mold and shape you. You could resist my efforts. You could hinder my work. You must welcome my work in and through you. I would never knowingly resist your efforts or hinder your work. Really? Have you never been stubborn? Have you never been strong willed? Have you never been opinionated? Have you never disobeyed me? Have you never run away from me? Have you never disobeyed my instructions and rejected my guidance? Have you never determined that you were going to live your life for yourself, by doing your own thing? Well, I have done all of those things at one time or another. Will doing those things help or hinder my work of molding and shaping you? Doing any of those things will no doubt hinder your work of molding and shaping me Yes, it will.

What must you do if you want me to mold and shape you? I must draw near to you. I must submit myself to you. I must listen attentively to you. I must follow you to where you lead me. I must do what you ask of me. I must focus my heart and mind and life on you. In a word, I must give myself fully to you, so that you can mold and shape me into your masterpiece. Couldn’t I mold and shape you against your will? You could, but you won’t. Why is that? You have given me a free will. You have given me a life to live. I can choose to live my life with and for you, or I can choose to wander away from you. It is my choice. Yes, it is. Well, without a doubt I want to live my life with and for you. I want you to mold and shape me into your masterpiece. I want to be the work of your hands. That is very good. That is what I will do for you.

Heavenly Father, thank you for molding and shaping my life. I have great joy and comfort and confidence knowing that I am the work of your hands. Keep on molding and shaping my life. Make me into your masterpiece so that I can bring glory to your name. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 4 – Isaiah 64:8 – You Are The Potter – Growing As Disciples

Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.  Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

Clay

I am your Father. I am the potter. You are the clay. What does all this mean to you? What are your thoughts? You are my Heavenly Father. You love me perfectly. You know what’s best for me. You see what I cannot see. You know what I cannot know. You have a purpose and plan for my life. Your love designed me and is now continuing to shape me as I follow you. Why is it important for you to know and remember that I am your loving Heavenly Father? As I know and remember your love for me I will trust you. As I trust you I will allow you to mold and shape my life. Your molding and shaping of my life might not always feel pleasant or be comfortable. You will stretch me. You will remove from my life what is not pleasing to you. You will change me according to your purposes and plans. Yes, I will.

Why is it important to know that you are clay? I am in rough shape. I am not a completed work. I will need molding and shaping now and up until the day I meet you face to face. Yes, you will. I am not wise or knowledgeable enough to know what you want me to look like. I don’t always know how you want to use me. As the clay, all I need to be is willing to be molded and shaped by you. That’s right. It’s very important that I willingly welcome all the molding and shaping you want to do in my life. If I am reluctant or unwilling to allow you to mold and shape me then your work will be hindered. Yes, it will.

Why is important for you to know that you are the work of my hands? I need to know and remember and expect that you will continually be molding and shaping my life according to your design. Your work will never stop. You will use your word to shape me. You will use circumstances to mold me. You will use other people to mold and shape me. You will use the ministry that you have called me to do for you to mold and shape me. You will use my participation in the body of Christ to mold and shape me. You will use all of life to mold and shape me into the person you want me to become. Yes, I will. I will not always understand how you are molding and shaping my life. No, you will not. I need to know and remember that I am a work in your hands. I need to have faith in you. I need to trust you. I need to be patient and let your work continue. Yes, you do. Will you? Yes Lord, I will.

Heavenly Father, thank you for molding and shaping my life according to your purposes and plans. I willingly welcome all your molding and shaping of my life. You are the potter. I am the clay. I trust you wholeheartedly. Amen

Key Question… How will your willingness or reluctance help or hinder God’s ability to mold and shape your life?

Living It Out… Willingly allow God to mold and shape your life according to His purposes and plans for your life.

Seeing It Happen Have faith that God is molding and shaping your life according to His purposes and plans for you.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are willingly allowing God to mold and shape your life.

You Are The Potter

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Transformation - Isaiah 64:8 - You Are The Potter- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Transformation – Isaiah 64:8 – You Are The Potter- Growing As Disciples

Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

Lump

That’s me. I feel like a lump of clay. I’m discouraged. I’m down. I’m depressed. Why do I feel so inadequate? Why do I feel so unusable? Am I really the work of your hands? Are you really molding and shaping my life? Will you really be able to make me into someone you can use? Will I bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name? Will I ever be your work of art? Will I one day be your masterpiece?  I don’t doubt you. I doubt me. That’s good. What’s good about that? It’s good that you doubt yourself and it’s good that you don’t doubt me.

When has clay been able to make itself into a work of art? When has clay been able to create a masterpiece? It’s quite all right that you feel like a lump of clay. Why is that? You are a lump of clay. You are a work in progress. I am molding and shaping your life. I am making you into a work of art. You will be my masterpiece. I don’t think I look like a piece of art. I don’t think I qualify as a masterpiece. Stop thinking that. I’m not done with you yet.

You are impatient. You want my work in you to be completed quickly. You would like me to speed things up a bit.  Would you like my work in you to be done right now? How about tomorrow or the next day? Or, would you like me to take my time?  Do you want me to answer those questions? Yes, I want you to answer these questions. Take your time. Think carefully about your answer. If you finished with me right now I would not be much of a work of art. I would certainly not be a masterpiece. A real work of art that becomes a masterpiece does not happen overnight. That’s right. I don’t ever want to get in your way. I don’t ever want to limit your working in and through my life. I want you to keep on molding and shaping my life. Take your time. I’m no longer in a hurry. I can wait. I will set aside my impatience. I will trust that you are working in my life day-by-day and moment-by-moment. When I get discouraged and depressed and feel unusable I will remember that it is you that is working in and through my life. You are making me into your work of art. I will be your masterpiece. Yes, you will.

Heavenly Father, thank you that you are the potter and I am the clay. Forgive me for wanting to be molded into something or someone else. I welcome you to mold and shape my life according to your purposes and plans. Make me into your masterpiece. Amen
