Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Life – Matthew 4:4 – On Every Word That Comes From The Mouth Of God – Growing As Disciples

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Feast On

Are you nibbling or feasting on my word? What does nibbling on your word look like? You tell me. I suppose nibbling on your word would include hearing your word at church and reading it once in a while for myself. Nibbling on your word would probably seldom involve listening attentively to it, thinking deeply about it, remembering it, or actually putting it into practice. Nibbling on your word would be more like receiving a free sample at the grocery store but never actually buying the product. You have a very good idea of what nibbling on my word looks like. What would feasting on my word look like? Feasting on your word would certainly involve listening attentively to it, thinking deeply about it, remembering it and actually putting it into practice. Yes, it would. I would like to say more. Go ahead. Feasting on your word would also mean it was a regularly part of my daily diet. If I really wanted to feast on your word I would set aside a daily time and a place to meet with you in your word. Yes, you would. So, in answer to your question, I have been feasting on your word. Yes, you have been.

What has feasting on my word done for you? Feasting on your word has changed and is changing my heart. How so? As I have feasted on your word the desires of my heart have changed. What I want has changed. In the past I wanted all that I wanted. I was never content. I always wanted more. A lot of what I wanted was not what you wanted for me. Like what? I wanted all that the world had to offer. A lot of what I wanted was sinful. I was easily tempted by evil and controlled by my passions. I was an easy target for the Devil and all his temptations. My heart was entangled and in bondage to sin. Not now? No, not now! Now, my heart wants what you want. I want to know and do your will. Yes, I can see that. Tell me more. Your word has also transformed and is transforming my mind. How so? In the past my mind was weak. I thought about whatever came into my mind. What did you think? The world and all its values bombarded my mind and controlled most of what I thought. I thought and lived according to the world’s values just like most everyone else. My worldly thoughts and values also made me an easy target for the Devil and his temptations. My mind was darkened and under his power. Not now? No, not now! Now, I meditate on your word day and night. Now, it is my delight to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your will. Yes, I can see that.

I would like to say more. Go ahead. Your word has sustained me. You word strengthens me. You word is a shield around me. Your word fights in me, with me, and for me. Yes, it does. I can stand on your word against every attack of the Devil and his evil. Yes, you can. It is my joy to meet with you in your word. There is no place I would rather be than with you in your word. Yes, I can see that too. I will allow your word to continue to change my heart and transform my mind. That’s very good.

Lord, use your word to change my heart and its desires. Use your word to transform my mind and its thoughts. Use your word to make me able to stand against the devil and his evil temptations. Feed, sustain and strengthen me with your word. Amen

From The Mouth Of God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Matthew 4:4 - From The Mouth Of God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Matthew 4:4 – From The Mouth Of God – Growing As Disciples

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Under Attack

What will you do when you are under attack? How will you stand up against powerful temptations? How will you be able to resist the devil and all his evil? What will sustain you when you are worn out, weary, and completely exhausted? What will prepare and strengthen you when you are at your weakest moment? I will do what you have done. I will make your priority my priority. Your answer needs some explanation. I would be happy to explain my answer. You made the word of God your priority. You listened attentively to all that your Heavenly Father had to say to you. You made the word of God your food. You feasted on the word of God. You let God’s word dwell in you richly. You meditated on God’s word day and night. You hid God’s word in your heart. God’s word was continually in your heart and on your mind. You let God’s word guard and guide your life. Yes, you are right. You will do well if you also let the word of God rule and reign in your heart and mind and life.

I have more to say. Go ahead I’m listening. You allowed God’s word to fight for you. You knew God’s word. You prayed God’s word. You spoke God’s word. You answered every one of the devil’s temptations with God’s word. It did not matter that you were weary and worn out. It did not matter that you were at a weak moment. No, it did not. God’s word sustained and strengthened you. God’s word was like a sword fighting against the devil and all his evil. Yes, you are right. You will do well if you let the word of God fight in you, with you and for you.

I have even more to say. I’m still listening. You have set before me an example. You have shown me how important it is for me to know the word of God. Yes, I have. God’s word will strengthen me against every temptation. God’s word will make me able to stand against every evil. Yes, it will. A challenge is before me. Questions are being asked of me. Will I make God’s word my food? Will I feast on the word of God? Will I meditate on God’s word day and night? Will I let God’s word dwell in me richly? You are asking me these questions. Yes. I am. Lord, I will do what you have done. I will follow your example. I will hide God’s word in my heart and mind so that I can live the life you have called me to live. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you that your word feeds, sustains and strengthens me against temptation and evil of every kind. I will feast on your word so I will be able to know and do your will. Guard and guide my life by your word as I follow and serve you. Amen

Every Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Matthew 4:4 - Every Word - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Matthew 4:4 – Every Word – Growing As Disciples

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Living On My Word

I am thankful that I have your word. Why is that? Your word is living and active. Your word is powerful and effective. How So? Just as food feeds my physical life, your word feeds my spiritual life. As I have fed on your word it is changing everything about me. I would like to hear you say more about that. Your word is changing the thoughts of my mind. No longer am I letting my mind be conformed to the patterns of this world. No longer am I thinking just like everyone in the world thinks. I am not accepting the patterns, practices and values of the world. What are you doing? I’m letting your word dwell in me richly. How so? I’m reading your word. I’m studying your word. I’m meditating on and memorizing your word. I’m praying your word and I’m putting your word into practice. As I take a hold of your word, it is taking a hold of me. I’m thinking thoughts that you give me to think. That is very good.

What else? Your word is changing my heart. Say more. At one time, it was a big battle of my will and sacrifice on my part to be willing to go and do your will. Often, I did so very reluctantly. I noticed. Now, it is the desire of my heart to go and do your will. I want to do what is pleasing to you. It is my joy to follow and serve you. That is very good.

What else? I’ve already begun to tell you how my mind being transformed and my heart being changed has begun to impact the deeds of my life. It has now become my goal to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to shine brightly as your witness in the world. In every way I want to go and do your well. One day I hope to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Yes, I have heard you express that desire many times. Where do you think that desire has come from? It has come from you. That’s right. Will I grant desires that I give to you? Most certainly. Yes, I will.

What else? Your word has been changing the prayers of my heart. Without your word, I would not know how to pray. Often times, I pray the promises in your word. I ask that what you promise in your word will be true in my experience. What do you mean by that? I don’t want to be only a hearer of your word. I want to put your word into practice. I want to live out your word in my daily life. So, I am allowing the subject of your word to become the content of my prayers. That’s good. Keeping living on my word. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your word. I will live on every word that comes from your mouth. I will allow your word to change the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth, deeds of my life and prayers of my heart. Speak to me. I will listen carefully to you. Amen
