If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 (ESV)

Two Choices

How will you live your life? I’m not sure that I understand your question. Isn’t there a lot of different ways that I could live my life? Isn’t life filled with an almost unlimited amount of choices? On one hand, you are right, life does offer an almost unlimited number of possible choices. On the other hand, you are wrong. How so? Really, there are only two choices to make in life. I find that hard to believe. How could there be only two choices in life? You have my full attention. That’s good. Listen carefully to what I am about to say to you. You will have the choice of living by the Spirit or living by the flesh. There is no middle ground. One choice eliminates the other. If you choose to life by the flesh, you will be rejecting living by the Spirit. If you choose to live by the Spirit, you will be rejecting living by the flesh. I get it. I understand. I now see how there are only two choices in life. That’s good.

I want to live by the Spirit. I will reject living by the flesh. Good choice. How did you first begin to make that choice? I turned away from living my old sinful life. I asked you to forgive my sins. I asked you to cleanse me of all my unrighteousness. I said that I want to love, follow and serve you. I said that I would follow you to where you lead me. I said that I would do what you ask of me. I turned my life over to you completely. Yes, you did. What did I do for you? You forgave my sins and cleansed me of my unrighteousness. You filled me with your Holy Spirit. You are now leading and guiding my life. Every day, I am following you. Yes, you are.

Let’s talk more about following me. Let’s talk more about your living your life for me. I’m listening. You made one of two choices. Yes, I did. That wasn’t the end of all your choices in life, was it? Certainly not, I have many choices to make every moment of every day. Yes, you do. How will you make all those choices? All my choices in life will be guided by the one choice I made of deciding to live by your Spirit. I want to know and do your will. I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to keep in step with you every day of my life. I want to live by your Spirit. That is very good.

Holy Spirit, I have left my old sinful life behind. Thank you for coming into my life. I want you to lead my life. Help me to keep in step with you. Guide me to where you want me to go. Give me what you want me to do. Use my life to bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Keep In Step With The Spirit

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Let Us - Galatians 5:25-26 - Keep In Step With The Spirit - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Let Us – Galatians 5:25-26 – Keep In Step With The Spirit – Growing As Disciples

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Galatians 5:25-26 (NIV)

In Step

When you gave your life to me I put my Spirit in you. You were born again to a new life with me. You are now following me. You are listening to my voice speaking to you. You are meeting with me in my word. The work that I began in you is ongoing and I will bring it into completion when we see each other face to face. You are the work of my hands. I am molding and shaping your life. I am making you into the person that I want you to be. How does all this sound to you? All that you have done, are doing and will do for me is wonderful beyond compare. It gives me great joy to know that I am a work in your hands. It is the desire of my heart to know you. I wait attentively to hear your voice speaking to me. It is my delight to meet with you in your word. I am excited to see the changes that you are making in my life. I welcome all the work that you want to do in and through me. I am your servant. You are my child. Yes, you are my Father. I do find meaning and purpose in serving you. I like doing the work that you have given me to do for you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and your glory. I want to fulfill the purposes and plans that you have for my life. Yes, I can see that and you will fulfill the purposes and plans I have for your life as you follow me. Let’s talk more about that. I would be happy to talk about that.

What threats do you see to your listening to me and keeping in step with my Spirit? Busyness is a big threat. How so? If I allow myself to become too busy with my life in this world I might not take time to meet with you. Noise is another threat. Tell about that. If I don’t quiet myself before you the noise from this life will make it so I cannot hear all that you have to say to me. You’ve got that right. Hurry is also another threat. If I race through life I will I will run right on by what you want me to see. Yes, you will. Let’s talk more about your pace in life. I want you to keep in step with me. If you are too busy, allowing your life to be filled with noise or are always in a hurry will you be able to keep in step with me? No, I will not. I will either lag behind you or run ahead of you. I will not know where you are leading me. I will not know what you are asking me to do for you. Why is that?  I won’t be able to hear your instructions or see your guidance. No, you will not. Will you be very careful to keep in step with me? Yes, I will.

Holy Spirit, I neither want to run ahead or lag behind your leading in my life. I want to keep in step with you. Help me to leave behind the acts of the sinful nature. Develop your fruit in me as I follow you to where you lead me. Work in and through my life. Amen

So I Say Live By The Spirit

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Guidance - Galatians 5:16-18 - So I Say Live By The Spirit - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Guidance – Galatians 5:16-18 – So I Say Live By The Spirit – Growing As Disciples

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. Galatians 5:16-18 (NIV)

Feast And Famine

Do you want to live your life for me? Yes, I want to live my life fully and completely for you. What must I do since I want to live my life for you? You know the answer to your own question. You tell me. I must do two things in living my life for you. That’s right. I must live by your Spirit. How will you live by my Spirit? I must listen to you. I must follow you to where you lead me. I must do all that you ask of me. How will you go about listening to me? How will you receive guidance from me? I will set aside a time and a place to meet with you in your word. I will allow you to speak your word into my life. I will let your word dwell in me richly. Your word will do its work in me. How so? Your word will change my heart and transform my mind. Yes, it will. Your Spirit will take your word and use it as a sword to fight in me, with me, and for me. Your word will make me able to stand against temptation. Your word will strengthen my desire to live by your Spirit. Your word will give me a hunger to know you and a desire to walk in your ways. Your word will make me able to resist the desires of the sinful nature. Say more about that.

I mentioned that I must do two things if I want to live my life for you. Yes, you did. I have talked about living by your Spirit. At the same time that I am living by your Spirit I must also refrain from gratifying the desires of the sinful nature. Living by your Spirit and gratifying the desires of sinful are in opposition to each other. Yes, they are. How will you refrain from gratifying the desires of the sinful nature? In answer to your question I think of two words. I think of the words feast and famine. I will feast on your word and the new life in the Spirit that you have for me. I will put gratifying the desires of the sinful nature on a famine diet. How will you do that? As I am living my new life in the Spirit I will separate myself from anything and everything that feeds the desires of the sinful nature. Then I will live my life fully and completely for you. That will be very good.

Lord, I will separate myself from whatever feeds temptation and sinful desires within me. Instead I will take part in what helps me to live by the Spirit. For example, I will allow the Spirit to use your word to help me to stand against temptation and sinful desires. Amen
