Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 309 – Luke 15:4-7 – I Have Found My Lost Sheep – Growing As Disciples

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:4-7 (NIV)

Join Me

Do you want to join me in what I am doing? Of course, I want to join you in what you are doing. What are you doing? How can I join you in what you are doing? You said yes to me without qualification. You offered to join me without knowing what I was doing. Yes, I did. Isn’t that the way it should be? Shouldn’t I be willing to go wherever you lead me to do whatever you ask of me? Shouldn’t I be willing to take steps of faith to leave the unknown to do what might be uncomfortable? Must I always know where I am going and what I am doing before I say yes to you? I don’t think so. That is not the way the life of faith is, of that I am sure. So, I have given you my unqualified yes. That is very good.

Where I am going and what I am doing should come as no secret or surprise to you. Why is that? I have always been going and doing the same thing. That seems unlikely to me. You would be incorrect in that line of thinking. You will change your thinking when I tell you where I am going and what I am doing. I’m listening with expectant anticipation. You have my full attention. I am going to seek and save the lost. I am wanting to find my bruised and battered and broken lost sheep. You are right, I am not at all surprised. Why is that? You have never stopped, nor will you ever stop looking for your lost sheep. How do you know this so well? I was once one of your lost sheep. I was bruised and battered and broken. I was wandering away on a path that led away from you. You would not let me go. You pursued me. You sought me out. You made it so I could turn my life around and begin to love and to follow and serve you. You rescued me from a life without you. You and all of heaven rejoiced on the day I gave my life to you. Yes, that is true.

Do you want to rejoice with me and with all of heaven? Do you want to join me in seeking to save the lost? Will you join me in what I am doing? Can I use you in helping me to seek and find my lost sheep? Can I use you to help others to come to know and love and follow and serve me? Yes Lord, you can use me to help find your lost sheep. I am at your disposal. I am ready for your use. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for seeking and finding me, one of your lost sheep. You rescued me from a life without you. You pulled me off the path that led away from you. You rejoiced on the day I returned to you. Help me now, to join you in seeking and finding lost sheep. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Lost Sheep – Luke 15:4-7 – Growing As Disciples

Go After

You know sheep are not the smartest of animals, don’t you?  Yes, that’s what I understand.  Do you know why I have compared you to a sheep?  Yes, I think so.  Tell me how you compare favorably with a sheep.  That’s a funny way to put it.  I don’t like to think that I’m like a sheep.  Why is that?  A sheep is pretty dumb and defenseless.  They have a tendency to wander off into trouble and get bruised and battered as a result.  Yes, they certainly doBut you’ve done all that haven’t you.  Yes, I’ve wandered away from you into danger.  I’ve allowed myself to be hurt by the consequences of my bad and sinful choices.  I’ve known what it is like to be off alone by myself crying out just like a sheep.  Did my crying out to you sound at all like the bah of a sheep?  Yes, quite similar actually.   Wasn’t that like a little object lesson for you?  Yes, in those moments I felt very sheepish.  You felt more than that, didn’t you?  Yes, I felt lost and without hope.  That was a good place to be.  Why is that?  It showed you that you needed me, didn’t it?  Yes, in that place all my independence, stubbornness, and pride was set aside because I was in desperate need.  Yes, you were.  It’s a good thing the story did not end there, isn’t it?  Yes, it is.

Tell me what you think happened.  When I was wandering off into the world, you were pursuing me.  When I thought I was all alone, you were right there.  You were watching and waiting for just the right moment when I’d had enough of the world and was ready to turn away from it to give my life to you.  Yes, I was.  What happened next?  I asked forgiveness for all my sin and bad choices.  I said I was sorry.  I told you that I wanted to follow you and leave my old life behind.  Yes, you did.  What did it do for you?  You forgave, cleansed and healed me.  You put me on your shoulders and carried me.  You brought me into a time and place where you refreshed, revived, and restored my soul.  You allowed me to drink deeply of your kindness, mercy and love.  I was able to feast on your word.  You changed my heart and mind and desires as your Holy Spirit worked your word into my life.  Yes, you’re right about all of this.  I’d like to ask you a question.  Go ahead.

What about now?  What is now the desire of your heart?  I want to know you.  I want to be like you.  I want to join you in what you are doing.  What do you think that is?  You are a good shepherd who came to seek and save the lost.  Yes, I am.  Would you like to join me in that work?  Yes, Lord I would.  Then you will.  You will go after the lost and feed my sheep.  Yes, Lord I will.

Lord, I was off by myself, stubbornly wandering in a life of sin. My life was a mess. I was bruised and battered. You left heaven to find and save me. Thank you for rescuing me and carrying me back to you so I could live a new life.  Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – Luke 15:4-7 – My Lost Sheep- Growing As Disciples

You Rescued Me

You were lost and without hope in the world. You were on your own. You were all by yourself. You thought you were strong. You thought you were self-sufficient. You were independent and stubborn and strong willed. You thought you could handle whatever life brought your way. You did not want help. You didn’t need anyone’s advice. You lived for your own comfort. You sought your own pleasure. You were on a dark and lonely path. You were walking away from me.  Yes, I was walking away from you.

Life was not good for you. You experienced the pain that comes from the kind of life you were living. You were weary. You were worn out. You were bruised and battered and broken by life. You hurt others. Others hurt you. You were wounded and in need of healing. Yes, I was in great pain. I wanted something else. I needed something more. I was looking for something different. I needed and wanted you. I didn’t know that at the time. All I knew is that I was empty inside. I ached all over. I know that I cried out to you. I asked you for your help. Yes, you did cry out to me. It was more like a scream. Yes, it was. You asked me to show myself to you, if I was real. Yes, that was my scream. Did you accept that as my prayer? Yes, I did.

Did I show myself to you? Yes, you showed yourself to me.  Did I seek you out? Did I pursue you in your pain? Wasn’t I your Good Shepherd? Weren’t you one of my lost sheep? Yes, you pursued me. Yes, you sought me out. You responded to my cry. You came to me. You took me out of the muck and mire that was my life. You set my feet on solid ground. You forgave all my sin. You cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. You healed my bruised and battered and broken life. You carried me. You calmed me. You brought me to a place where you could revive, refresh and restore my soul. Now, you are my Savior and Lord. Now I am on the path of life walking with you. Yes, you are. I am so thankful that you rescued me.

Lord, I was off by myself, stubbornly wandering in a life of sin. My life was a mess. I was bruised and battered. You left heaven to find and save me. Thank you for healing and rescuing me and giving me a new life of following you. Amen
