Given To You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Will - Luke 6:37-38 - Given To You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Will – Luke 6:37-38 – Given To You – Growing As Disciples

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:37-38 (NIV)

Your Measure

What do you hope to receive from others? What would you like to receive from me? Will you give to others what you hope to receive back from them? Will give freely what you would like to receive from me? Will you be tight fisted? Will you be open handed? Will you give sparingly or will you give generously? Your measure is what you can expect to receive back from others. What does that mean? If you measure out judgement you can expect to receive judgement. If you give out condemnation you can expect to receive condemnation. If you forgive, you will be forgiven. If you give you will receive. Is that a rule or principle? Are you asking me, “is this a rule or principle in my kingdom?” Yes, that’s it, that is my question. Yes, this is the way things work in my kingdom. Then my behavior will often determine what I receive back in life? Yes, that’s true. I will bless your life as you live as a blessing to others. I will give you a word of warning. What’s that? Don’t always expect that people will automatically bless your life just because you have blessed theirs. This is a broken and sin filled world. This is dark and evil place. I get that. You aren’t telling me anything new. Why do you think I want your measure for others to be generously filled with goodness? You want my life to shine as a bright witness in the world for you. You want others to see your life being lived out in me. Yes, I do. I will give you a certain promise. What’s that? As you live your life as a blessing to others, I will bless your life. My blessing on your life will be both now and forever. The good things that you do for me in this life will store up treasure in heaven for you. You will be repaid for all the good deeds you do for me. Every act of kindness and love you do for others you will be doing for me. Well then, I don’t want to give with some small measure. I want my measure to be generous. I want to give abundantly to others. I want to pour myself out as a generous gift to others. That will be very good.

Lord, I will generously give out what I want to receive. I will treat others just as I would like to be treated. I will not judge and condemn others. I will forgive others just as I want to be forgiven. I will give to others what I also hope to receive. Amen

Key Question… How have you become more open handed rather than tight fisted in your giving to others?

Do Not Judge

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 180 – Luke 6:37-38 – Do Not Judge – Growing As Disciples

A Blessing To Others

What do you hope to receive from me? What do you hope to receive from others? I’m not sure how to answer that question. I’m not positive what you are asking of me. I could ask you more questions. I would like you to ask me more questions. Do you hope to receive forgiveness? Do you hope to receive mercy? Do you hope to receive love? Do you hope to receive kindness? Do you hope to receive generosity? Now, I understand what you are asking of me. Yes, I want to receive forgiveness and mercy and love and kindness and generosity. That’s good.

How can you be sure to receive forgiveness and mercy and kindness and generosity? You seem hesitant. Would you like me to ask another question? Yes, please ask me another question. How can you be sure to not receive forgiveness and mercy and kindness and love and generosity? Well, I am certain that I will never receive what I am unwilling to give to others. If I don’t give forgiveness and mercy and love and kindness and generosity to others, I will surely not receive it from you or anyone else. I have heard you say, ‘Forgive others, just as I have forgiven you.” I know that you expect me to forgive others. I know that you want me to give to others what I have received from you. Yes, I do. If I give others forgiveness and mercy and kindness and love and generosity, I will surely receive it myself. Yes, you will.

With what measure will you use to give others your forgiveness, mercy, love, kindness and generosity? Will you give sparingly? Will you give reluctantly? Will you give begrudgingly? No, I will not. What will you do? I will generously give to others what I have received from you. I will give freely. I will give joyously. It will be my daily practice to give all of these with an abundant measure. Why will you do this? This is what you have asked of me. This is your will. You want me to become like you. You want me to go and do what you did. Yes, I do. You also want to be able to abundantly bless my life as I live as a blessing to others. Yes, I do. Will you live this kind of life for me? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will use a very large measure when I decide how much to give to others. I will give to others only what I hope to receive back. I will not judge or condemn. I will make it my practice to graciously forgive others just as you have graciously forgiven me. Amen

Key Question… How are you making it your consistent practice to give to others only what you hope to receive?

Living It Out… Allow the Lord to use you to bless the lives of others.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will bless your life as you bless the lives of others.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord is using you to bless the lives of others.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you give to others what you hope to receive.

Give And It Will Be Given To You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 157 - Luke 6:37-38 - Give And It Will Be Given To You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 157 – Luke 6:37-38 – Give And It Will Be Given To You – Growing As Disciples

Giving And Receiving

What will you give to others? What do you hope to receive from others? I know where this is headed. Where is this headed? There is a law of reciprocity in life. Tell me about it. If I judge others, I can expect that others will judge me. If I condemn others, I can expect that I will be condemned by them. If, I don’t forgive others, they will not forgive me. You are correct. But you can say more. I know that if I am to receive your forgiveness, I must also forgive others. That is also true. So, failing to forgive is not only a tragedy in this life, it is a tragedy in the next life as well. How so? I don’t want to live with the consequences of being unforgiving, judging and condemning. I want to live in your forgiveness both now and forever. And so, you will as you continue to show others the same kindness and mercy and love that I have shown to you. That I will do. I will follow your example. I will do for others, what you have done for me. I will allow your kindness and mercy and love to flow in and through me to others. That will be very good.

There is more to talk about regarding this law of reciprocity. Yes, I do have more to say. I’m listening. You want me to be generous with what you have given to me. You have richly blessed my life. You have blessed me so I could be a blessing to others. That is true. You do not want me to be tight fisted and closed handed with those who are in need. You want me to give freely just as you have given freely to me. Yes, that is exactly what I want and what I expect of you. But what else do you know? I know that I can’t outgive you. As I continue to give and be generous with others, you will continue to give me more so I can continue to keep on blessing the lives of others. I have found it to be abundantly true that with the measure I give will be the same measure with which I will receive. If I give very little, I will receive very little. So, will you keep on generously giving to others what you hope to receive? Yes Lord, I will keep on giving and receiving so I can bless the lives of others, just as you have blessed my life. That will be very good.

Lord, I will generously give to others what I hope to receive back from them. I will give out forgiveness and kindness, mercy and love. I will give out understanding, encouragement and compassionate. Help me to freely give out what you want me to receive back. Amen

Key Question… How are you continually giving out good things that you would like to receive back from others?

Living It Out… Freely and generously give to others what you hope to receive back from them.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will help you to give to others what hope to receive back from them.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you have received back from others what you have given to them.
