Stored Up In His Heart

The Virtuous Life - Day 209 - Luke 6-43-45 - Stored Up In His Heart - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 209 – Luke 6-43-45 – Stored Up In His Heart – Growing As Disciples

No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.  Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.  The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:43-45 (NIV)

Storing Up Treasure

How do I do that? What does that mean? What are you asking me? How do I store up treasure in my heart? Oh, I am quite certain that you can answer that question. Are you sure? Quite sure. I will help you out. I will ask you questions that will point you in the right direction. I will ask you questions that will help you to formulate your answer. What do you treasure? What treasure could possibly be stored in your heart? What treasure in your heart will change the way that you think and speak and act? What treasure will mold and shape your life? What treasure will make you able to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name? What treasure will guard and guide the course of your life? What treasure will last for all eternity? Now, I am understanding. Now, I have some clarity. I treasure your word. I treasure your promises. If I take your word deeply into my heart and mind and life I will be changed. Your word, doing its work in me, will mold and shape my life. Your word, dwelling in me richly, will change my heart and transform mind. Your word will change the way I think and speak and act. Your word will mold and shape me into the person you want me to become. You word will help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Your word will guard and guide the course of my life. All that I now see, all that I can now touch, will one day pass away. Your word will never pass away. Your world will last for all eternity. There is only one thing worthy of being stored in my heart. Your word is like hidden treasure, more valuable than silver or gold, and is worthy to be stored in my heart. That I will do. That will be very good. Then the goodness of my word, stored in your heart, will come out in your life. What is hidden in your heart cannot stay there. The goodness of my word will overflow and spill out of your life. Then you will be powerfully used by me. Then you will be a bright witness for me in the world. Then the thoughts of your mind, words of your mouth and deeds of your life will be fully pleasing to me. This is my desire and hope and prayer. I will store up your word within me. That will be very good.

Lord, I will store up good things in my heart. I will store the promises of your word in my heart. Help my life to bear good fruit for you. Help my life to bring out the good that has been stored in it. Use my life to bear fruit for you. Amen

Show Time

Do you know what is in your heart? That’s a different question. I can’t say that I know what’s in my heart. How can I possibly know what’s in my heart? That sounds like an impossible task to me. No, it’s not. Actually, it’s quite easy to know what is in your heart. It’s equally easy to know what is in another person’s heart as well. You have definitely made me curious. What must I do if I want to know what is in my heart? How can I possibly know what is in the heart of another person? You must listen carefully if you want to know what is in your or another’s person heart. Listen? Listen, to what? Listen to the words that come out of your mouth. Listen to the words that will come out of another person’s mouth. Your words will reveal what is in your heart. Another person’s words will reveal what is in their heart.

How will my words reveal what is in my heart? How will another’s person’s words reveal what is in their heart? This is not a hard concept to understand. When you say something, when another person says something it is “show time”. Words that come out of a mouth reveal what is in the heart. Have you ever said something and then thought, “Where did that come from?” Yes, that thought has crossed my mind. What is the answer to your thought? Whatever comes out of my mouth is in my heart. That’s exactly right. Give me some examples. If I say angry words I have an angry heart. If I say fear filled words I have a fearful heart. If I say doubt filled words I have a doubtful heart. You got it.

I got it but I’m not happy about it. What do you mean by that? I’m not happy about the words that have been coming out of my mouth. I’m not happy about what is obviously in my heart. Good. Good, what’s good? You want to have a different heart. You want to speak different words. Yes, I want a new heart. I want to speak words that reveal a good and fruitful heart. I want my heart and words and life to bring glory to your name. I want your goodness to overflow my life with words that give life and bear fruit for your kingdom. You want me to change your heart and words and life? Is that your prayer? Yes Lord, that is my prayer. I will hear and answer that prayer of yours.

Lord, I know that the words that come out of my mouth are a good gauge of what is in my heart. Change my heart. Overflow my life with your goodness. Help me to speak good and fruitful words that bring glory to your name. Amen

Overflow Of His Heart

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Transformation - Luke 6:43-45 - Overflow Of His Heart - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Transformation – Luke 6:43-45 – Overflow Of His Heart – Growing As Disciples

Good Fruit

Do you want your life to bear good or bad fruit? That is an easy question to answer. Of course, I want my life to bear good fruit. Who, in their right mind, would want to live a life that bore bad fruit? It is the desire of my heart to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. You have heard me say that many times. Yes, I have heard you say that repeatedly. I will never tire of hearing you say that to me. I’m glad about that.

You have a very large role in determining the quality and the amount of fruit you will bear for me. How is that? What you store up in your heart and mind will come out of your life. What do you mean by that? How can I store up things in my life? Everything that you take into your heart and mind gets stored up in you. Everything that you hear and see will be stored in you. Everything that you think, say and do gets stored in you. I didn’t realize that.

You may not be aware of it, but, there is a daily battle in a war going on over your heart and mind and life. What does that mean? The battle and war that I am referring to can be expressed with one question. What is that question? What are you allowing to be stored up in you? I’m not sure what you mean.  Are you allowing my word to be stored up in you? Are you allowing what is good and right and true to be stored up in you? Are you thinking thoughts that are pleasing to me? Are you going and doing what I ask of you? Are you putting into practice all that I am showing you? These are all ways to store up good things in my heart and mind. That’s right. If I store up all these good things in me, I will bear an abundance of good fruit for your kingdom. Yes, you will. If I do just the opposite and store up a lot of garbage in my heart and mind I will not bear good fruit for you. In fact, my life will bear bad fruit. That’s right. Whatever I store up in my heart and mind will one day come out. That’s true. Will you store up good things in your heart and mind so your life can bear good fruit for my kingdom? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, In the past I have stored up a lot of garbage in my heart. Help me to guard my heart. Help me to store up your word in my heart. I want all the good that has been stored up in my heart to come out. I want to bear an abundance of good fruit for you. Amen

Storing Up – Bringing Out

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Luke 6:43-45 - Storing Up - Bringing Out - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Luke 6:43-45 – Storing Up – Bringing Out – Growing As Disciples

Good Fruit

Do you want to bear fruit for my kingdom? Do you want to bring glory to my name? Nothing is more important to me than bearing fruit for your kingdom and bringing glory to your name. How can I be certain to bear good fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name? That’s a very good question. Do you know what certainly won’t bear fruit for my kingdom or bring glory to my name? I think so. Tell me. My own best ideas and my own best efforts will not bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name. That’s right. It pleases me that you know this to be true. You remember my word that has said, ‘apart from me you can do nothing.” Yes, I do. Those words are stored up in my heart. That’s a key thought. You’re on to a very important idea. You are very close to the answer to your question. Tell me what you are thinking.

In the past I have had a lot of bad things stored up in my heart. Every once in a while, my mouth would reveal what was stored up in my heart. I would say things that I deeply regretted. I would wonder where in the world did my pathetic words come from. The answer was, they came from my heart. What was in my heart would always eventually spill out of my life for everyone to see. That’s true. What is also true, is that you have been changing my heart. As I have been storing up your word in my heart, you have been changing my heart and transforming my mind. You have been helpful to think your thoughts. You have been helping me to walk in your ways. You have been helping to know and do your will. My heart and mind and life are being filled up to the brim with good things, as I have been meeting with you in your word. Exactly, and what is now spilling out of your life? Good things are spilling out of my life. I am speaking words that reveal the good work that you are doing in my heart and mind and life. Is it now difficult for you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name? No, all I need to do is to follow you to where you lead me and do what you ask of me. That has become the desire of my heart because of the work you are doing in and through my life. All praise and glory and honor belong to you. It is you that is bearing fruit in and through my life. Yes, I am.

Lord, I have had bad things stored up in my heart. What was in my heart came out of my mouth. I wasn’t happy. Others weren’t happy. You weren’t happy. But, you are changing me. Keep using your word to change my heart. Make my life fruitful for you. Amen
