Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 27:17 – Sharpens Another – Growing As Disciples

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

Sharped

Do you want to be sharpened as one of my followers? I’m not sure what that means. Do you want to be as effective as you can be as one of my followers? Do you want to be used to the utmost to accomplish my highest purpose for your life? I certainly do not want to fall short. I definitely don’t want to miss the mark. I want to accomplish your purposes. I want to fulfill all your plans. I don’t want any gift, talent or ability that you have given me to go undiscovered or unused. I don’t want to leave anything in reserve. I don’t want to make any retreats. I want to have no regrets. That is very good.

How will you sharpen me for your use? That is a very good question. I will sharpen you in an almost innumerable variety of ways. You couldn’t begin to imagine how and what I will use to sharpen you as one of my followers. There is one way that I will use to sharpen you that I want to talk about with you now. How is that? I will use others to sharpen you. I will use your brothers and sisters in faith to sharpen you. Not only that, I will use you to sharpen your brothers and sisters in the faith as well. Others will help you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. You will help others to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. I like that. This is what I want. This is the desire of my heart. That is very good.

If you want to sharpen others and be sharpened by them there is one thing you must do and one thing you must not do. What must I do? You must live in close relationship with the brothers and sisters in faith that I bring into your life. You cannot remain distant to your brothers and sister in the faith if you hope to sharpen others and be sharpened by them. Do you understand? Yes, I do. Will you live in close relationship with your brothers and sisters in the faith? Yes, I will. That will be very good. What must I not do? You must not be stubborn and proud and resistant to my working in and though you. If you hope to be sharpened and sharpen others you must humbly allow my work to be done in and through you. It will take humility to be willing to be sharpened by others. It will take humility to be willing to sharpen the lives of others. Will you let go of all stubbornness, pride and resistance? Will you humbly allow me to work in and through you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to be sharpened as one of your followers. I want to be able to help sharpen others as they follow you. I will allow you to sharpen me through the work of your followers. Use me also in other’s lives so they too can be sharpened as they follow you. Amen
