Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 1:7 – The Fear Of The Lord? – Growing As Disciples
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)
I Need You
Do you know it all? Are you full of knowledge? Do you have all you need? Can you guard and guide your own life? Do you know the path to life? Do you know where to walk? Do you know what to avoid? Will you accept wisdom and discipline and instruction from me? Will you make yourself attention to my voice? Will you listen to me? Will you follow and obey me? You are asking me a lot of questions. Yes, I am. Do you have any answers? That is kind of the point isn’t it? What do you mean by saying that? I don’t have the answers. I am not wise. I am not full of knowledge. I desperately need your wisdom and discipline and instruction. I don’t know where to walk. I don’t know what to avoid. I need you to guard and guide my life. I need to you. These are good admissions.
What do you fear? I fear that I will live less than the life you have called me to live. I fear that I will waste what you have given to me. I fear that I will miss something because I have not been fully attentive to your voice. I have a healthy awe and respect and fear of you. My fear of you makes me want to be attentive to your voice. My fear of you makes me take seriously everything you have to say to me. That’s good.
Want do you want? I want to know and love you. I want to follow and serve you. I want to live a life that is fully pleasing to you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to walk with you through life. That’s good.
What do you believe about me? I believe that you are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and King. You love and care for me. You will guard and guide my life. You will lead me to where you want me to go. You will give me what you want me to do. My life is in your hands. That’s good.
What have I done in you, for you and through you? You have changed me. You have made me new. You have forgiven my sins. You have cleansed my unrighteousness. You have redeemed my life. You have given me a new life to live. You have given me a hope and a future. You are using me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I have. Yes, I am. Yes, I will.
Keep on loving me. Keep on following me. Keep on serving me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good. Then you will have nothing to fear.
Lord, I do have a healthy awe, respect and fear of you. I am attentive to you. Listening to you is the priority of my life. I want to hear and act on everything you have to say to me. Give me your wisdom and discipline. Guard and guide me as I joyfully follow you. Amen
