Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 100 – Psalm 119:9-16 – His Way Pure – Growing As Disciples

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.  I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees.  With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.  I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.  I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.  I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:9-16 (NIV)

Keep Your Way Pure

Is that what you want? Is what do I want? Do you want to keep your way pure? Do you want a heart and mind and life that seeks me? Do you want a mind that thinks my thoughts? Do you want a mouth that speaks my heart? Do you want a life that does what is good and right and pleasing to me? Yes, I want all these things to be true of me. Do you have any idea how I will make you able to live this kind of life? I know one thing for certain. What’s that? Living this kind of life is not possible without you changing my heart and transforming my mind. You are very wise to know that this is true. How will I change your heart and transform your mind? What tool will do that work in you? Your word will change my heart and transform my mind. What will you do with my word so that it can do its work in you? I will hide your word in my heart. Your word will teach and train me. Your word will help me to not sin against you. Your Holy Spirit will take your word and use it like a sword to fight in me, with me, for me and through me. Your word will make me able to resist temptation. Your word will make me able to withstand evil. Yes, my word and the power of my Holy Spirit will use my word to change your heart, transform you mind and guide your life. I am thankful for your word. It is my joy to meet with you in your word. Having your word is far better than having great riches. I will delight in your word. I will not neglect your word. I will not stray from your word. Your word will be ever before me as I walk through life with you. Guard and guide my life with your word. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, do I always live according to your word? Do I always hide your word deeply in my heart? Do I always keep my way pure? No, I don’t. Forgive me. But hiding your word in my heart, living by it, and keeping my way pure is the desire and direction of my life. Amen

Hidden Your Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 59 - Psalm 119:9-16 - Hidden Your Word- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 59 – Psalm 119:9-16 – Hidden Your Word- Growing As Disciples

Hidden

That is what I have been doing with your word. What have you been doing with my word? I have hidden your word in my heart. How have you hidden my word in your heart? I have let your word dwell in me richly. I have read your word. I have meditated on your word. I have memorized your word. I have studied your word. I have prayed your word. I have even taught your word. Most importantly, I have taken hold of your word so that your word will take hold of me. That is very good.

How do you want my word to take hold of you? I want your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. I want your word to help me to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. I want your word to help me to know you. I want your word to help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want your word to help me resist temptation and stand against evil. I want your word to help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is very good.

How often do you feel a need to take hold of my word so my word will take hold of you? There is not a day that goes by that I don’t need to take hold of your word. Likewise, I need your word to take hold of me every day. So, what does that mean to you? That means that I will come to meet with you every day in your word. That is very good.

What has wanting to meet with me every day in my word required of you? I have needed to set apart a time and a place to meet with you. Why is that? That seems so formal. Wouldn’t it work to meet with me when a time and place opens up in your daily schedule? We both know the answer to that question. Yes, but I would still like to hear your answer. That approach never works. Time never opens up on my schedule. A quiet place never makes itself available to us either. A pattern and practice of meeting with you in your word will never randomly develop. Life is busy. Life is noisy. Life is chaotic. No, meeting daily with you in your word will not happen consistently if I don’t set an appointment with you. So, meeting with you in your word is on my every day schedule. So, a special time and sacred place has been set aside for us to meet together. That is very good. As meet together, my word will accomplish in and through all that you could hope for and far more than you could ever imagine. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will hide your word in my heart. I will memorize and meditate on your word. Use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. Use your word to help me resist temptation and stand against evil. I will allow you to use your word to guide my life. Amen

Key Question… What strategies are you using to hide God’s word in your heart?

Living It Out…  Meditate and memorize God’s word so that it will be hidden in your heart.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will use His word to help you to resist temptation and stand against evil.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God’s word has been guarding and guiding your life.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you hide God’s word in your heart so you will not sin against Him.

The Word Centered Life - Day 8 - Psalm 119:9-16 - Living According To Your Word - Growing As Disciples

The Word Centered Life – Day 8 – Psalm 119:9-16 – Living According To Your Word – Growing As Disciples

Your Word

Do you want to keep your way pure? Do you want to live a life that is pleasing to me? Yes, I want to keep my way pure. Yes, I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. What must I do to keep my way pure and live a life that is pleasing to you? That is a good question. I will let you answer that question. I thought you might say that. Then you were not surprised. No, I was not. Go ahead, I’m listening. I will start off my saying what will not work. I will tell you what I have tried and failed at miserably. Trying harder will not work. No amount of better effort on my part will keep my way pure. Relying on myself will not make me able to keep my way pure or live a life that is pleasing to you. How do you know this to be true? This has been my experience. These efforts have brought nothing but discouragement and defeat and even depression to me. As long has my focus has been on myself and my efforts, I have lived with one failure after another. That’s not good. No, it’s not.

What has changed for you? How are you now keeping your way pure and living a life that is pleasing to me? I have taken my eyes off myself. My focus is now on you. I am seeking you with all my heart. And this is not self-effort. You have been fanning this flame of desire in me. You have been helping me to seek you with all my heart. It pleases me that you recognize the work I have been doing in you. How have you been seeking me? Where have you been meeting with me? I have been meeting with you in your word. I have been meditating on your word. I have been hiding your word in my heart. Your word has been changing my heart, transforming my mind, and guarding and guiding my life. None of my thoughts or words or actions have been left untouched by your word. Your word has been allowing me to think your thoughts, speak your words, and take your actions. We have lived together in a back-and-forth dialogue about your word and what you have been teaching me. So, I have come to value your word as more valuable than any riches in this world. I have great joy in meeting with you in your word. I am greatly encouraged by how you have been and are continuing to help me to keep my way pure and live a life that is pleasing to you. That is very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I want to keep my way pure. I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I will seek you with all my heart. I will hide your word in my heart. Daily, I will meditate on your word. Use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Amen

Teach Me Your Decrees

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - Psalm 119:9-16 - Teach Me Your Decrees - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Psalm 119:9-16 – Teach Me Your Decrees – Growing As Disciples

My Word

What do you think of my word? It is my joy to hear your word. I rejoice in hearing you speak to me. I don’t want to miss out on anything that you have to say to me. Your word is more valuable to me than any treasure that this world has to offer. Your word guards and guides my life. How is my word guarding and guiding your life? Your word is changing my heart and transforming my mind. As I meditate on your word I am able to understand what you want to teach me. As I consider your word I am able to see how you want to train me. Your word helps me to know your will. Your word helps me to think your thoughts. Your word keeps me walking in your ways. I am listening to you and following your words. Yes, you are.

How does my word keep your way pure? There is a battle going on over my mind. The world and its’ evil desires has plenty that it wants to say to me. Without your word I would be defenseless against the evil that is in the world. I would think and act according to all that it has to say to me. Your word puts your thoughts and ways in my heart and mind. Your word stands against the words that are of this world. I want your word in my life. I hunger for your word. I delight in your word. Your word pushes the thoughts and words of this world out of my heart and mind. I can’t think two sets of words at one time. Either your word or the world’s words will rule my heart and my mind. Your word cleanses and scrubs the words from the world out of my heart and my mind. Hearing your word gives me a burning desire to live my life for you. I don’t want to stray. I don’t want to wander. I want to follow everything you are saying to me with your word. Yes, you do.

Will you continue in my word? Will you let my word dwell in you? I will meditate on your word. I will treasure your word. I will live my life according to your word. I will rejoice in your word. I will put your word into practice as I follow you. Yes, you will.

Lord, I will hide your word in my heart. Guard and guide my life with your word. I will meditate on your word so I can understand all you want to teach me. Thank you for the great riches I am receiving as I meet with you in your word. Amen
