Humbly Serve
Who do you think that you are? That is a good question Yes, it is. It is important for you to have a balanced assessment of who you are. I’m not sure what you mean by that. Have you ever thought too highly of yourself? You’ve got to be kidding me. I can’t believe you are even asking me that question. Why is that? I have had a major problem with thinking that I am better than other people. I would never say that out loud. I might even try to stifle that thought in my mind. I might, in my less self-aware moments, deny that it is true. You have had some indications that it is true, haven’t you? Yes. I would like you to tell me what has helped you to see that you have had a pride filled assessment of yourself. How do you know for sure that you have thought you were better than others? What could possibly explain my tendency to interrupt people? Why do I often dominate conversations by talking too much? Why do I often focus on what I am about to say, rather than, listening to what others are saying? Do I think my thoughts are more important? Do I think that my words have more to add to the conversation? Am I more interesting? I don’t like these questions. I like the answers even less. I could go on. Why am I so poor at remembering other people’s names? Are others unimportant? Are others not special? Yes, I can see that you are deeply concerned with the self-important attitude that have had in your life. That’s an understatement.
What attitude would you like to have about yourself? I would like to think that I am special. I am not more special than others. I am equally special. You made uniquely made me. You uniquely made others. You have given me special gifts and talents and abilities. You have given others equally special gifts and talents and abilities. You have called me, along with others, to be a humble servant. I want to love and serve you and others with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to be used by you. I want to be able to recognize how you are using others. I want to know that I have something very valuable to contribute as I serve you and others. I want to be able to recognize how others are valuably contributing what they have, to serve you and others.
I don’t want to stand out from others in serving you. I want to stand with others in serving you. That is a very good attitude for you to have about yourself and others. Where do you think this attitude has come from? It comes from you. You are helping me to know your thoughts and walk in your ways. Yes, I am.
Lord, on one hand, I know I am no big deal. I am not better than others. My gifts, and talents and abilities are not superior to what others have received. Yet, I am special to you. You have called me to humbly serve you and others. For that, I am so thankful. Amen
