Written For Our Instruction

The Word Centered Life - Day 16 - Romans 15-1-4 - Written For Our Instruction - Growing As Disciples

The Word Centered Life – Day 16 – Romans 15-1-4 – Written For Our Instruction – Growing As Disciples

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.  For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”  For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:1-4 (ESV)

Instruct Me

Here I am. I am ready to receive your instruction. I am willing to follow your guidance. Teach me, so that I can know how to fully live my life with and for you. I will listen attentively to your word. I will mediate on your word day and night.  I will take your word deeply into my heart and mind and life. I will allow your word to dwell in me richly. I am at your feet. I have quieted myself before you. You have my full attention. Use your word to change my heart. Use your word to transform my mind. Use your word to guide my life. Instruct me Lord, I am listening. That is very good.

You have chosen what is better. You have made your heart and mind and life available to me. You have withdrawn from the noise and busyness of life. You have slowed down and stopped to listen to me. You are making it your daily pattern and practice to meet with me in my word. Yes, there is no place I would rather be. There is nothing that I would rather do. I can see that in you. That is very good. In my presence, you will be changed. In my presence, you will be transformed. In my presence, I will mold and shape you. You will follow my example. You will live as I lived. You will think like I thought. You will act like I acted. No longer will you live to please yourself. Rather, you will live to do good. You will bear with the failings of the weak. You will build up your neighbor, according to their needs. My word will give you strength. My word will give you encouragement, as you go and do whatever I ask of you. My hand will be on you. My favor will be with you. You will bear fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name. You will store up treasure in heaven with me. Thank you, Lord, I am at your service. I am listening to you. That is very good.

Lord, thank you that your word is powerfully instructing me on how to live my life with and for you. I will follow your example. I bear with the failings of the weak. I will serve others according to their needs. I will do good by building up my neighbor. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 258- Romans 15:1-4 – Written To Teach Us – Growing As Disciples

We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.  Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.  For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”  For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:1-4 (NIV)

Meeting Daily With Me In My Word

I know where I need to be. I know what I need to do. Where do you need to be and what do you need to do? I need to be in your word. I need to make it my daily practice to meet with you in your word. Why is this vitally important? I need to be taught by you. I need to be trained by you. I need to be guarded and guided by your word. I need to be mold and shaped by your word. I need to be lifted up and encouraged and inspired by your word. Your word will strengthen me. Your word will feed and sustain me. Your word will change my heart, transform my mind, and guide my life. What will happen to you if you fail to meet with me in my word? Not much, none of what I have already mentioned. It is your will and way to use your word to powerfully work in my life. My life, as one of your followers, will be nothing but anemically pathetic if I fail to meet with you in your word. I will not know your will. I will not understand your ways. I will not be able to walk on the path that you have laid out for me. You have very strong opinions on this matter? Yes, I have strong opinions, but I believe that they are not my own. I have made them my own, but they do not originate with me. It is you that has said that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. You have also said that I should remain in you and your word should remain in me. If I do not remain in you and your word does remain in me, my life will bear no fruit and my prayers will not be heard and answered. How said would that be? Very sad, indeed. You are correct, if you want to live the life, I have called you to live, you must meet with me in my word.

Is there a day that will go by that you do not need to hear from me? Is there a day that you don’t need me to teach and train you? Is there a day that you don’t need me to mold and shape you? Is there a day that you don’t need me to guard and guide you? Not one, Lord. Will you keep on meeting daily with me in my word? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I do need your word to work in my life. I need to be taught and trained by your word. I need to be guarded and guide by your word. I need to receive encouragement and hope from your word. Use your word to reorder my thoughts, opinions, and values. Amen

Key Question…  Why will your life with God never grow and flourish without regularly meeting with Him in His word?

Living It Out…  Make it your daily practice to meet with God is His word so He can encourage you and fill you with hope.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that you will have what you need to live a godly life as you continue to meet with God in His word.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group details of your practice of meeting with God daily in His word.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you live a godly life filled with prayers that the Lord will hear and answer.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 213 – Romans 15:1-4 – To Teach Us – Growing As Disciples

We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves.  We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.  For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.”  Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. Romans 15:1-4 (NLT)

Fill My Life With Hope

Why have I given you my word? What will my word accomplish in your life? Why is it important that you listen attentively to my word? How are you making it your daily practice to meet with me in my word? Those are all very important questions. I need to carefully consider all that you are asking of me. Why is that? If I don’t carefully consider your questions and adequately answer them, I might fail to meet with you in your word. Meeting with you in your word might become a random and infrequent activity if I fail to understand the value of your word working in my life. Meeting with you in your word is not one more good idea among many other possible good ideas. Meeting in your word needs to be the number one priority of my life. Why is that? You speak to me through your word. You mold and shape my life by your word. You guard and guide me by your word. You encourage and build me up and strengthen me by your word. You fill my life with hope and joy and peace by your word. If I were to fail to meet with you in your word, it would be as if I were saying that I need none of these things from you. That would be a very foolish mistake. As it is, there is no place I would rather be than in your word. There is nothing I would rather do than to receive your instruction and follow your guidance. I want to hear from you. I welcome you to use your word to keep on doing your work in and for and through me. Those last couple words bring another thought to my mind. What’s that? You not only want to use your word to work in me. You want to use your word to work through me. Yes, I do. Whatever you do in, or for me, by your word, you want me to share with others what I have received form you. Like what? You want me to share hope and peace and joy. You want me to share instruction and guidance. You want me to share encouragement and strength and protection. You even want me to share the molding and shaping I have received from you, by your word. Yes, I do. There is nothing that I have received from your word that you don’t want to share with others. That is correct. So, you will continue to meet with me daily in my word? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will allow you to teach me. I will receive your instruction and follow your guidance. Use your word to fill me with hope. Use your word to encourage me. Build me up with your word so I can build up and encourage others with all I have receive from you. Amen
