Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 120 – Romans 8:28-30 – God Works For The Good – Growing As Disciples

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. Romans 8:28-30 (NIV)

Purpose

I know the purpose of my life. The purpose of my life is no mystery to me.  Really, you are that clear on your purpose in life? You have not one bit of doubt about your purpose in life? You have unwavering confidence about the purpose of your life? That’s right. I have no doubts about my purpose in life. I have unwavering confidence that I know my purpose in life. Well then, tell me what is your purpose in life. Before I do that, I must say a couple things. I’m listening. I only know my purpose in life because you have shown it to me. I am only confident about my purpose in life because you have given it to me. In fact, it would have been more accurate and proper to say that I know your purpose for my life. I can only say that I know my purpose in life because I have made your purpose my purpose. My passionate desire has taken hold of your purpose of my life. This desire clearly could have only come from you. Are you done qualifying your statements? Yes, I am. My purpose in life is to become like your son, Jesus Christ.  Yes, it is. It pleases me that you know and have made this purpose your very own. Becoming like your son is defining and directing my purpose and the entire course of my life. That is very good.

There is more. There is something else that I am supremely confident about. What’s that? I am confident about you. That’s good. You will use all of life to mold and shape my life so I will keep on being conformed into the likeness of your son. You will take the good and bad things that happen in my life to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans for my life. I know that you are not the author of trials and suffering and difficulty. I know that you weep with me as I go through pain in life. In every trial, suffering and difficultly, you will draw near me as I draw near to you. You will hear my prayers as I cry out to you. Yes, I will. I will have no doubts that you will keep on taking all of life to use it to mold and shape me into the likeness of your Son. I welcome all your good work in me. That is very good.

Heavenly Father, thank you for calling me to come to you. Through your son, Jesus Christ, you made it so I could be righteous in your sight. Use everything I go through in life for your purposes. Mold and shape my life so I will be conformed to Christ’s likeness. Amen

Key Question… When has God taken something very negative and used it for something very positive in your life?

Work Together For Good

The Sacramental Life - Day 332 - Romans 8-28-30 - Work Together For Good - Growing As Disciples

The Sacramental Life – Day 332 – Romans 8-28-30 – Work Together For Good – Growing As Disciples

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. Romans 8:28-30 (ESV)

Your Plan

I am thankful for your plan. What is my plan? Well, it was and still is your plan that I come to know and love and follow and serve you. How do you know that to be true? Well, you are allowing me to come to know and love and follow and serve you. You made a way for me to come to know and love and follow and serve you. What way did I make for you? You sent your Son into the world to die and pay for my sins. You helped me to receive your Son as my Savior and Lord. You helped me to turn away from my old and sinful life in the world. You have given me a brand-new life in you. There is now no barrier of sin separating me from you. You have justified me in your sight. This has all happened. Yes, it did. You have done all this for me. This was and still is your plan that has and is still unfolding for me. There is something else I could say. What is that? I could also say that I did not know about your plan. I did not seek out your plan. At one time, I am sad to admit, I would have said that I didn’t want or need your plan. I would have told you that I had my own plan, and it did not include you. What foolish, unwise, and tragic thoughts those would have been if I had lived them out my entire life. Yes, but you have not lived out those foolish, and unwise and tragic thoughts. Instead, it is your desire to know and love and follow and serve me with all your heart. You want to live in an intimate relationship with Me. You want to know and do my will. You want my purposes and plan to be fulfilled in your life. That is true. This is the desire of my heart. That is very good.

Tell me more about my plan for you. What else do you know about my plan for you?  It is your plan that I conform to the image of your Son. You want me to think and speak and act like Him. You want me to live as He lived. You want me to do what He did. You want others to see His life being lived out in me. You want others to be drawn to you through what they see of Him in my life. Yes, this is my plan for you. How will I accomplish this plan in your life? You will take all the circumstances of life, the good and the bad, and use them together to accomplish your plan in my life. And I welcome your plan into my life. Nothing could be better than being conformed to the image of your Son. Do your work in me. Accomplish your plan in my life. Yes, I will.

Lord, thank you for calling me to come to you. I have turned from my old life of sin and received your Son, Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. Now, I am forgiven and justified in your sight. Use all things together for good. Conform me to the image of your Son. Amen

Key Question…  How has God worked all things together for good as you have loved, followed, and served Him?

Living It Out…  Live according to the purposes of God so you can be conformed to the image of His Son.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will work all things together for good as you love, follow, and serve Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has been working things together for good in your life.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May your love for God cause you to live your life according to His purposes.

Called According To His Purpose

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - Romans 8:28-30 - Called According To His Purpose - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Romans 8:28-30 – Called According To His Purpose – Growing As Disciples

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Romans 8:28-30 (NLT)

Become Like Him

I have a purpose and a plan for your life. Do you know what my purpose and plan is? Yes, I do. Tell me about my purpose and plan for your life. You want to make me to be like your Son, Jesus Christ. Yes, I do. How will I make you to be like my Son? What will I use to mold and shape your life so that you become like my Son? You will use all of life to make me to be like your Son. You will use all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life to shape my life according to your purposes and plans. Yes, I will. How does that sound to you? It sounds like some of the molding and shaping of my life might be painful. I’m pretty sure that I will not like every moment of every day. No, you won’t.  I don’t want you to be confused about something. What’s that? I will not bring all kinds of pain and suffering on you just so that I can use it to mold and shape your life. Don’t ever think of me as a source or author of pain, suffering and evil in your life. That’s not who I am. That is not what I do. This world is not how I designed it. This world has been broken by the power of sin. You will experience pain and suffering and disappointment and loss in this world just like everyone else who has ever lived in it. I will be with you through all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life. I will weep when you weep. I will share your joy. You are right though. What am I right about? I will use all of life to mold and shape your life. I will be able to take the worst of circumstances and bring good even out of them. You already know that to be true, don’t you? Yes, in the greatest of pain and in the midst of my suffering you have come to show me your love. You have drawn near to me as I have drawn near to you. When my heart has been broken you have been there to comfort me. The pain and suffering that I have gone through, I would never want to go through again. But, I would not want to trade away how much I have come to know you and your love in the darkest of those hours. You have been using all of life to make me to be like your Son. Yes, and I will bring my work in you to full completion.

Heavenly Father, thank you for calling me to come to you. I know you have a plan for my life. You want to make me to be like your Son. I welcome you to use all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life to shape me into the person you want me to be. Amen
