Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 22 – Romans 8:5-8 – Mind Set – Growing As Disciples

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8 (NIV)

Mind Set

I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. That is what I desire. That is my hope. That is my dream. That is my prayer. That is very good. How will you live a life that is pleasing to me? There is no mystery in knowing the answer to that question. Knowing how to live a life that is pleasing to you is not something that is hidden and difficult to understand. It is quite obvious that I, and every other person, have a choice to make. Two different choices are before me. That’s right. One choice, setting my mind on the sinful nature will ultimately lead to death. That choice will lead me away from you. That choice will offer me the world and all that is in it and nothing more. Following that choice will lead me to live a bruised and battered and broken life. That life is filled with darkness and discouragement and depression. That life is without hope and meaning and purpose. It sounds like you have some experience with living that life. Yes, I do. I was on that road. I was living that life. I was pursuing my own comfort and pleasure. I was living for all that the world and had to offer. It was an alluring and deceptive life. It gave false hope and meaning and purpose. It gave me no joy. It brought me nothing but darkness and discouragement and depression. I saw first-hand what life without you looked like. I felt the bruising and battering and brokenness of life in this world. I saw clearly the death this life was bringing to me. I wanted no more. I wanted none of it. I wanted something else. I wanted more. I know now, that I wanted you. I cried out to you. I asked you to come into my life. I asked you to forgive my sins. I asked you to be my Savior and Lord. You heard and answered my prayer. You rescued me from a life without you. Yes, I did.

What about now? You mentioned you had two choices. Yes, I did. Tell me more about the choice you made. I have chosen to set my mind on the things of the Spirit. What does that mean? My heart and mind and life are focused on you. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. My life is in your hands. I am listening to your voice. I am being guided by your Spirit. I am relying on your help. I am going where you guide me. I am doing what you ask me. My life is not focused on what this world has to offer. In every way, on every day, I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. That is very good.

Heavenly Father, I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. I will set my mind on the things of your Spirit. Help me to fully live the life you have called me to live. Fill me with your life and peace. Amen

Key Question… How is daily setting your mind on the things of the Spirit helping you to live a life that pleases God?

What The Spirit Desires

The Spirit Empowered Life - Day 144 - Romans 8-5-8 - What The Spirit Desires - Growing As Disciples

The Spirit Empowered Life – Day 144 – Romans 8-5-8 – What The Spirit Desires – Growing As Disciples

Mind Set

What will be your mindset? I’m not sure what you mean. What you set your mind on will determine the entire course of your life. What you allow yourself to think and guide all that you say and do. What are my choices? That is a good question. I will let you tell me what choices are before you. As I see it, I have only two choices before me. Only two? That’s right. I can choose to live according to the sinful nature. I can set my mind on what the sinful naturally desires. That would be a very poor choice. That choice would lead to pain and suffering. That choice would lead to anguish and regret. That choice would lead to death, both now, and forever. Saying that would be a poor choice sounds like an understatement, don’t you think? Yes definitely, the anguish and regret and pain and suffering of that choice would be unending. That’s true. That has not been, nor will it ever be my choice. What is your choice? I will set my mind on what the Holy Spirit desires. My thoughts will not be on the things of this world. I will not adopt the values and patterns and practices of this life. I will not allow the world to shape me according to its mold. Instead, I will allow you to mold and shape me. I will listen attentively to you. I will keep your word ever before me. I will allow your word to dwell in me richly. I will meditate on your word day and night. You will guide the course of my life. You will give me thoughts to think, words to speak, and actions to take. I will live my life according to your will. I will go and do what is pleasing to you. You will fill me with life and peace. You will make me able to live a life that is pleasing to you. This is what I want. This is what I desire. This is the choice I have and will continue to make as I love and follow and serve you, with all that is within me. You have made a very good choice. You have made a choice that you will never regret. You will live the life you have been called to live. Thank you, Holy Spirit for helping me to make this choice.

Holy Spirit, I will no longer allow my mind to be set on the sinful nature. I will set my mind on what you desire. Help me to live a life that is pleasing to God. Help me to live a life that is full of life and peace. Help me to think, speak and act according to God’s will. Amen

Life And Peace

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 144 - Romans 8:5-8 - Life And Peace - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 144 – Romans 8:5-8 – Life And Peace – Growing As Disciples

Life And Peace

Do you want to have life and peace? Who would not want life and peace? You would be surprised; many people do not want life and peace. Yes, of course I want life and peace. What must I do to have life and peace? That is a very good question. You must do two things if you want to have life and peace. You have my full attention. That’s good. First, you must not set your heart and mind and life on the sinful nature. You must not live according to the desires of the sinful nature. You must leave your old life of sin behind. You must become dead to sin and the old life you once lived. That old life leads to death. That old life is hostile to me. That old life wants to live and walk in darkness. That old life hates the light. That old life cannot submit to my law. Those who think and speak and act according to the sinful nature cannot live a life that is good and right and pleasing to me. So, if you want life and peace you must leave your old sinful life and all its thoughts and words and actions far behind you. This is step one, do you understand? Yes, I understand quite clearly. That’s good.

What is step two? What else must I do if I want life and peace? I first want to make one point very clear. What’s that? You will never be able to take step one without taking step two. Can you explain that to me? Gladly, you will never be able to be dead to sin unless you come alive to Me. You will never be able to leave your old sinful life and its nature without allowing me to give you a new nature. You will never be able to leave the darkness of your old life unless you come to walk in the light with me. You will never be able to stop thinking worldly and fleshly and evil thoughts of the sinful nature unless you come to think thoughts of the Spirit. You must take off the stinky and dirty clothes of your old life and put on the pure and clean clothes of the new life I have for you. You will never be able to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to me unless you think the thoughts, speak the words and live the life in the Spirit that I have for you. Do you understand what I am saying to you? Yes, I do. I will leave my old life behind and live the new life you have secured for me. Then I will have life and peace. Yes, you will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know my heart and mind are being bombarded daily to try to entice me to think of the sinful nature. I am in a battle and war. I will turn my heart and mind over to you. Use your word to help me to think of things of the Spirit so I can have life and peace. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 99 – Romans 8:5-8 – Minds Set – Growing As Disciples

Mind Set

What is your mind set? What are you allowing your mind to think? Is your mind set on the flesh? Are you thinking about sinful desires? Those are tough questions. You don’t beat around the bush. You get right to the point. I see that there is a choice before me. What choice do you have before you? I must choose what I will set my heart and mind and life on. There is no middle ground. My heart and mind and life will either be set on the flesh or on the Spirit. If I set my heart and mind and life on the flesh, I will be choosing a life not worth living. I will be choosing worldly and fleshly and sinful thoughts. Those thoughts will lead to worldly and fleshly and sinful words and actions. Choosing to live that kind of life will lead to death. There is no peace or hope or joy in that life. No, there is not. Leading that kind of life would make me hostile to you. A mind set on worldly and fleshly and sinful thoughts cannot please you. No, it cannot. Nothing could be farther away from the desire of my heart and mind and life. What is the desire of your heart and mind and life? I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want to think your thoughts, speak your words and take your actions. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to live the life you have given to me. I want to live in your peace. I want to experience your joy. I want to know and love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. In every way and on every day, I want to set my mind on what the Spirit desires. Those are very good desires. I’m sure that they come from you. Yes, they do. I know that you will help me to live the life that you have given me the desire to live. That is true. That is sure. That is certain. Thank you, Lord.

Holy Spirit, no longer will I allow my mind to be set on the flesh and sinful desires. Help me to set my mind on you. Help me to set my mind on what you desire. Give me a Spirit controlled mind, filled with your life and peace. Help me to submit to and please God. Amen
