Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. Exodus 16:4 (NIV)
Instructions
This is just like me. How so? I have been a grumbler. I have been a complainer. You have often heard me whining. No kidding. Has it been that bad? You tell me. It has been that bad. I know that grumbling and complaining and whining sounds pretty pathetic. No one is drawn to a grumbler and complainer and whiner. Nothing is quite as unattractive and unappealing as someone who is always grumbling, complaining and whining. I wouldn’t blame you if you remained distant from my grumbling and complaining and whining. Is that what you think I do, remain distant from you? No, I don’t. But, I’m sure that you have been disappointed and displeased with my grumbling, complaining and whining. Why is that? You have richly blessed my life. You have given me far more than I could have ever hoped for, dreamed of, or even imagined. It is a sin to be ungrateful. You want me to recognize and give thanks and praise to you for all your blessings. Yes, I do.
What will you do if you don’t have something that you need? I know what I won’t do. What’s that? I won’t grumble and complain about it. That’s good. What will you do? I will do three different things. First, I will make my needs known to you. I will humbly come to you in prayer. With a heart filled with faith I will make my needs know to you. That’s good, what else? I will listen carefully to your instructions. I will do whatever you ask of me. I don’t know how I could expect you to answer my prayers if I am unwilling to hear and obey your instructions. Sometimes, I haven’t had what I needed because I didn’t follow your instructions. Many times you have provided for my needs as I have followed and obeyed you. That’s right, what else? I will continually give thanks and praise to you. You have led me. You have guarded me. You sustained and strengthened me. You have richly blessed my life. I know that I can trust you. I know that I can rely on you. You are ready and willing and able to help me. You will supply what I need as I love, follow and serve you. Yes, I will. You can be sure of that.
Lord, I know I have been a grumbler and complainer. Forgive me. Help me to see how you have blessed my life. I know that you are answering my prayers. I will stop grumbling and complaining. I will give thanks and praise to you. I will follow your instructions. Amen
