Run With Perseverance The Race

The Virtuous Life - Day 192 - Hebrews 12:1-3 - Run With Perseverance The Race - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 192 – Hebrews 12:1-3 – Run With Perseverance The Race – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

Focused On Me

Do you want to run well and finish strong on the course that I have marked out for you? Do you want to stay on course and not become entangled in what would hinder you in your race of faith? Do you want to keep on running so you will not grow weary and lose heart? Yes, I want to run well and finish strong. Yes, I want to stay on course and not become entangled in what would hinder me in my race of faith. What will help me to stay on course? What will help me to run well and finish strong? What will prevent me from growing weary and losing heart? Those are all good questions. You are wise in knowing that much will be much required of you if you want all these things to be true for you in your race of faith. I’m listening. What must I do? What will be required of me? First, you must receive encouragement. You must realize that many, a multitude really, have gone before you. Look at the examples of all those who have run the race of faith before you. You are surrounded by a great cloud of witness. Emulate their lives. Follow their example. Let their lives and their godly character inspire you. Know that this cloud of witnesses is not silent. They are behind you, they are beside you, they are in front of you. They are cheering loudly for you. Do what they did. What did they do? They threw off anything and everything that would prevent them from running well. They did not let themselves become entangled in sin. Nothing distracted them. Nothing diverted them. Will you follow their example? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

We are not done yet. There is more? There is much more. Those who stayed on course, have run well, and finished strong have one thing in common. What is that? They kept their eyes on me. I was the focus of their attention. They wanted to follow me to where I was leading them. They wanted to do what I was asking of them. This single-hearted and single-minded focus kept them from growing weary and losing heart. As they lived in an intimate relationship with me, they were continually refreshed and revived and strengthened. They ran with all the strength I gave them as the relied on me. As they remained in me, they lived a fruitful life. They stayed on course. They ran well. They finished strong. Will you keep your heart and mind and life focused on me? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will throw off anything that hinders me from running well on the course you marked out for me. I will not let sin entangle me. I will fix my eyes on you. Help me to endure any opposition with perseverance. Keep me running well. Help me to finish strong. Amen

Continue To Work Out Your Salvation

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Therefore - Philippians 2:12-13 - Continue To Work Out Your Salvation - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Therefore – Philippians 2:12-13 – Continue To Work Out Your Salvation – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV)

I’m Working

How have I worked for you? That is a question that I am very happy to answer. You came into this world for me. You lived and died for me. You paid for my sins on the cross. You forgave all my sin. You cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. You rescued me from a life without you. You made me able to live in a close and intimate relationship with you. You filled me with your Holy Spirit as both a sign and guarantee of my new life now and forever in you. You have given me a new life to live. You have given me hope and meaning and purpose in life. I have a new direction in life. What is that direction? I will follow you as you lead me through life. I will go where you guide me. I will do all that you ask of me. Yes, you will.

How have I worked in you? That is another question that I am excited to answer. You have changed my heart and transformed my mind. How have I done that? Am I done changing your heart and transforming your mind? No, you are not finished with me yet, not by a long shot. You will continue to change my heart and transform my mind until the day that I come to live forever in heaven with you. Yes, I will. Tell me more about how I have been changing your heart and transforming your mind. You have used your word to change my heart and transform my mind. Your word has given me your thoughts to think and feelings to feel. Your word has helped me to both know and do your will. How so? As I have let your word dwell in me richly my old thoughts and ways have been replaced with your thoughts and ways. Now, it is my delight to know and do your will because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Yes, you do.

How have I worked through you? This question also gives me great joy to be able to answer. Why is that? It is astounding to know, that you, the God of the universe, want to work through me. I am humbled. I am in awe. I am at your service. Use me whenever, wherever and however you desire. Nothing would please me more than to be used by you. Use me in small ways. Use me in large ways. Use me in any way. It will be enough for me to know that I have been used by you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. Yes, you will.

Lord, thank you for rescuing me from a life without you. You are my Savior and Lord. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will follow you where you lead me. I will do all that you ask of me. Help me to live out my life of salvation in you. Amen

As God’s Chosen People

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Identity - As God's Chosen People - Colossians 3:12-14 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – As God’s Chosen People – Colossians 3:12-14 – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

Clothe Yourself

I’m not sure what’s more frustrating, the people I have to put up with or my bad attitude I have in responding to them. I’m sure that others have felt that I’ve been quite a handful to deal with at times. Maybe they have thrown their arms up in disgust about my behavior. That’s for sure. Really, I thought I was a little better and maybe more perfect than others. You’re kidding me, aren’t you? Yes Lord, I know that I’m flawed. I am a sinner in need of your forgiveness. Thank you for freely forgiving me. I didn’t have to earn your forgiveness. Not that I could have anyhow. I didn’t have to show you that I was worthy of your forgiveness. When I confessed my sin you just gave your forgiveness to me. Why is it that I have trouble being as loving and gracious toward others?

It’s like my first instinct is to put on the wrong clothes that don’t go together. My clothing combinations have been like mixing plaids with stripes or checks with polka dots. I don’t recall you ever wearing polka dots. No, I haven’t, but you get the idea. Yes, I do, but I’d like you to say more about what you mean. Do you want some examples? Yes, I do.

Here are some of my clothing combinations that haven’t gone together at all. I’ve wanted to be merciful in all my actions. That’s very good. Well, as I have put on mercy, I have also worn judgment with it. I’ve found fault in others and been critical of their behavior. Those definitely don’t go together. I know it’s an ugly combination that clashes with each other.

I’ve also wanted to have a kind heart that guides how I feel and respond to others. But, along with kindness I have attempted to also wear anger, bitterness, and revenge. Those are impossible combinations. You can’t have kindness in your heart and wear those. I know, the ugliness of anger, bitterness, and revenge overpowers the beauty of kindness. Yes, they do.

I’ve wanted to have a humble mind that is patient and tolerant with others. That would look very good on you. Yes, I know. What have you tried to combine it with? I am embarrassed to say that I’ve attempted to wear humbleness with pride. Those are opposites that clash. Yes, I could see that when I tried wearing them both.

It looks to me like you need help with clothing yourself. Yes Lord, I do. Would you like my help? Yes Lord, I would. There is one piece of clothing that will help you to know how to dress properly. What is that? It is love. I want you to put on my love. With the same love with which I loved you, I want you to love others. That’s what I want Lord. I know that you do. Would you like my help? Yes Lord, I would. Then ask me to help you to put on love. That will put all your other clothes in perfect unity. Will you ask me for this help? Yes Lord, I am asking for your help right now.

Lord, I know that with my own strength and ability I am not able to love and forgive just as you have loved and forgiven me. Help me to be clothed with your love so that I can love and forgive even those who have hurt me. Amen

Be Reconciled To Your Brother

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Remember - Matthew 5:23-24 - Be Reconciled To Your Brother - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Remember – Matthew 5:23-24 – Be Reconciled To Your Brother – Growing As Disciples

“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.  Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV)

Against You

Are you serious? What do you mean by asking me if I am serious? Am I serious about what? I know that I must be reconciled with the people in my life. I know that I can’t hold anger, bitterness, resentment or anything like that against them. That’s right. You want me to forgive others just as I have been forgiven. That is also correct. Holding on to anger, bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness will only serve to harm me. I can’t let anything like this come between you and I. No you cannot. I want to be able to freely worship you with nothing coming between us. That is very good. You still haven’t answered my question. Am I serious about what? I’m coming to that. Your word seems to say that I have to go and be reconciled with anyone who has anything against me. What if I don’t have anything against them? What if they have something against me and it’s one hundred percent their fault. Does that seem likely to you? Maybe not. What are the chances that someone has something against you and you don’t know about it? There is almost no chance of that. I would have to be pretty dense not to know that someone was holding something against me. What are the chances that you are one hundred percent free of any fault when someone is holding something against you? There is probably even less chance of that. You have probably done something to offend them even if it was not intended or it may have even been an accident. Maybe you have a bad habit that you are completely unaware of. That’s right, that’s very possible. But, isn’t it even more likely that you also are holding something against someone that is holding something against you? Yes, I suppose so. So, there is probably a mutual need for you to give and receive forgiveness when someone is holding something against you. I’m sure that’s true. So, in answer to your question. Yes, I am very serious. If someone is holding something against you, I want you to go and be reconciled to them. Think of it as a ministry that I have given to you. In the unlikely event that you have no fault in the matter you would still be helping to release another person from the bondage of anger, bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness. Will you go and be reconciled to anyone that holds anything against you? Yes, Lord, I will.

Lord, I don’t want anything to hinder my fellowship with you. I want to worship you with my entire being. I know it is crazy to think I can have broken relationships with other people and have an unhindered relationship with you. Help me to reconcile with others. Amen

Is A New Creation

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - 2 Corinthians 5-17 - Is A New Creation - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – 2 Corinthians 5-17 – Is A New Creation – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

What’s New?

What’s New? That is an interesting question. Why are you asking me, “What’s new?”  I want you to think about what is new in your life since the day that you came to believe in me. That would be quite a long list. I have plenty of time to hear all that you have to say to me. The newness that you brought into my life began on day one with you. What do you mean by that? On day one with you I turned away from my sin to follow you I asked you to forgive me of my all sins and cleanse me of all my unrighteousness. I said that I was giving my life to you and that I would follow you as my Savior and Lord. You answered my prayer and did all that I asked of you. Yes, I did. There was something more that I didn’t know was coming. What’s that? You filled me with your Holy Spirit. Your Holy Spirit made it so I could be born again to a new life in you. On day one, you made me to be your new creation. Yes, I did.

What changed since you become my new creation? I could live in a close and intimate relationship with you. I could talk to you in prayer. We could have an ongoing conversation together. You would draw near to me as I would draw near to you. I could listen to you as you also listened to me. That’s right. What else? Did everything in your life change all at once? What do you mean by that? Did you completely leave your old life so that you could live the new life I had for you to live? There were many things from my old sinful live that fell away right away. Much of my old life no longer appealed to me. I wanted to fully live the new life that you had given me to live in you. What happened? I began to see that not all of my old life of sin fell away. I found that quite discouraging. Why is that? I thought that you would make me a completely new creation all at once. That’s exactly what I did. Your spirit was reborn. I gave you a new heart and mind. Didn’t it become your desire to love me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength? Yes, that was and still is my desire. You thought you might be a completely new creation on day one? You thought I might finish all my work in your life in one day? I guess so. Well, you now know that my work continues in your life every day. Yes, I now know that and I welcome your ongoing work in my life. I will make you and every day new as you continue to love, follow and serve me.

Lord, thank you for drawing me to you. You made it possible for me to come to believe in you. You have made me to be a completely new creation. You have given me a completely new life to live you in you. Keep on molding and shaping my life as I follow you. Amen

Work Out Your Salvation

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Philippians 2:12-13 - Work Out Your Salvation- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Philippians 2:12-13 – Work Out Your Salvation- Growing As Disciples

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed–not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence–continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV)

Work Out

I know that you are working in me. You are changing my heart. You are transforming my mind. You are molding and shaping my life. You are leading me to where you want me to go. You are giving me what you want me to do. I welcome your work in me. My life is open to whatever you want to do in, for and through me. I don’t want anything to hinder your good work in me. I will follow and obey you. That is very good.

What have I used to do my good work in you? How have you worked out your salvation as I have worked in you? What could hinder the good work that I want to continue to do in you? I will start with your last question. Maybe, answering that question will also answer your first two questions. It will. Disobedience would certainly hinder your good work in me. Yes, it would. I would like you to say more on this subject. You have shown me how you want to work in me. How so? You have asked me to come to meet with you in your word. If I fail to meet with you in your word, I would hinder some of the work you want to do in me. In the same way if I failed to meet with you in prayer and worship your work in me would also be hindered. That’s right. If you wanted me to go somewhere, but I did not follow you, that would hinder your work in me. If you gave me something to do, but I failed to do it, that would also hinder your work in me. Yes, it would.

Your obedience to me is the way that you will work out your salvation as I continue to do my good work in you. What does your obedience to me require of you? My obedience to you will require me to listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. I need to create a time and set aside a place when and where I will come to listen to you. I should not think that I will be able to hear from you above the noise and busyness of life. If you needed to withdraw to a quiet and lonely place to hear from your Father, how much more do I need to do the very same thing. That’s right. Once I have heard from you, I need to go where you guide me and do all that you ask of me. Then you will be able to continue to do all your good work in me. That’s right. Will you listen attentively to me? Will you do whatever I ask of you? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, you rescued me from a life without you. You forgave my sin and cleansed me of my unrighteousness. You became my Savior and Lord. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will follow and serve you as you continue your work in me. Amen

Humble Yourselves

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - 1 Peter 1:5-6 - Humble Yourselves - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – 1 Peter 1:5-6 – Humble Yourselves – Growing As Disciples

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV)

 Due Time

I have lived a backwards life. What do you mean by that? I have thought that life should revolve around me. I have thought that I should be the center of everyone’s attention. I have tried to earn the notice, respect and admiration of those around me. I have chased after honors. I have sought after awards. My pride has led me to seek the esteem and the applause of the crowd. That sounds like an exhausting life to live. Have you ever received enough recognition? Have you ever been able to satisfy your pride filled empty life? No, I have worn myself trying to prove to myself and to others that I was somebody special.

Now, I want to live a completely different kind of life. What kind of life do you want to live? I want to live a life that revolves around you. I want you to be the center of my life. I want my heart and mind and life to be focused on you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to know you intimately. I want to hear your voice. I want to receive your guidance. I want to follow your direction. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do all that you ask of me. I will humbly follow you. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to do what is pleasing in your sight. That’s quite different from your old life. Yes, it is.

What has brought you to this point? Your old life was filled with pride. Your new life is filled with humility. Your old life was spent serving yourself. Your new life is being spent serving others. I discovered the poverty of my old life. I have discovered the riches of the new life you have given to me. In my old life, I could accomplish nothing of real and eternal value. In my new life, you are making me able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. In my old life, I proudly tried to elevate myself before others. In my new life, you are helping me to humble myself before you. In my old life, I was worn out, discouraged and empty. In my new life, I am energized, excited and full. You have brought me to this place. You have given me this new life to live. Yes, I have and in due time you will be lifted up as you continue to humbly serve me.

Lord, I have been filled with pride. I have thought I was a big deal and quite special. I have thought a lot of myself and very little of others. Forgive me. I will humble myself before you. I will rely on you for all I need. I will allow me to use me to serve others. Amen

Key Question…  May you walk humbly with God so that He can exalt you in due time.

Living It Out…  Live a life of humility so that the Lord can exalt you in due time.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will you exalt you in due time as you live your life humbly before Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how you are humbly following and serving the Lord.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you live a godly life filled with prayers that the Lord will hear and answer.

Cast All Your Anxiety On Him

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - 1 Peter 5:6-7 - Cast All Your Anxiety On Him - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – 1 Peter 5:6-7 – Cast All Your Anxiety On Him – Growing As Disciples

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)

I Care For You

Do you want me to lift you up? Do you want me to relieve you of your anxieties? You’ve noticed? Yes, I have noticed. My life is filled with anxiety. I have been living under heavy burdens. Do you know why you are filled with anxiety and living under heavy burdens? Life is tough. There is a lot to worry about in life. Life is filled with anxiety. There are a lot of heavy burdens to carry in life. That is true if you decide to carry them by yourself. What do you mean by that? What have you done with your anxieties? I’m not sure what you are asking of me. Have you turned all your anxieties over to me? Have you cast all your cares on me? Have you turned every one of your anxieties into a prayer to me? When anxiety and stress has begun to weigh you down have you drawn near to me in prayer? Have you asked me to lift you up? Have you asked me to take any burdens off of you? No, I have not. That has been a huge mistake, of that I am sure. That’s right.

Why is it that you have not asked for my help? Why have you not turned your anxieties and worries into prayers to me? Why have you not asked me to lift you up and remove heavy burdens from your life? Do you think I will not listen? Do you think I cannot hear? Do you think that I am not able to relieve you of your anxieties and remove your heavy burdens? No, I think none of those things. You must be thinking something else. Yes, I am afraid so. Tell what you have been thinking? I have been thinking that I can handle my anxieties and worries and burdens by myself. I have thought that I can and should be able to solve all my problems by myself. Has that been true? No, just the opposite has been true. Trying to solve my own problems has only caused me more anxiety and worry. The weight of my own burdens has only grown heavier under my own efforts. I’ve noticed.

Is there something you would like to do differently with your anxieties, worries and burdens? Yes, there is. What’s that? I want to humbly admit that I need your help. I will let go of my pride. I will draw near to you in prayer. I will come to ask for your help. I will cast all my anxieties, worries and prayers on you. I will rely on your help. That will be very good. You can be sure that I will hear and answer your prayers when you cast all your anxieties and worries and burdens on to me. Do you know why that Is? Yes, you care for me. Yes, I care for you far beyond what you can think or hope or even imagine.

Lord, my life has been filled with anxiety. My pride has made me slow to turn my anxieties over to you. I have foolishly tried to work my own way out of my anxieties. My efforts have made me more anxious. No more. Instead, I will cast all my anxieties on you. Amen
