Say No To Ungodliness

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 199 – Titus 2:11-14 – Say No To Ungodliness – Growing As Disciples

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus 2:11-14 (NIV)

No

I understand the importance of that word. You understand the importance of what word? I understand the importance of the word, no. Is there something that you want to tell me about the word, no? Yes, I have something to say about the word, no. I’m listening. You have taught me why to say no ungodliness and worldly passion. You have taught me when to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. You have taught me how to be able to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say. You already know what I will say. Yes, that is true. But that does not mean that I won’t have joy in hearing what you have to say. Here goes. You have taught me why it is important that I say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. Why is that? If I want to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to you, I will say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. If I want to shine brightly as your witness in the world, I will say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. If I want to live a life that bears fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name, I will say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. Yes, those are all very good reasons for you to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion.

You have taught me when to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. It is also critically important that I make an advance decision to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. Why is that? Ungodliness and worldly passion is not something to be uncertain about or play around with. Making an advance decision about ungodliness and worldly passion will help me to not enter into tempting situations in the first place. My advance decision will also help me to immediately flee ungodliness and worldly passion when I see it approaching. The surest way to fall into temptation is to linger around it. So, the time to make a decision about ungodliness and worldly passion is right now. Yes, it is. And the answer is no. That is very good.

Finally, you have taught me how to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion. This has taken me the longest time to understand. The only way that I will ever be able to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion is by keeping my heart and mind and life focused on you. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to you. I am excited and anxiously awaiting your return. I am filled with all the hope I have in you. I want to live the life you have called me to live. My mind is made up. Why would I want anything else or less? I don’t. I know that you will make me able to say no to ungodliness and worldly passion as I love, follow and serve you. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will say no to ungodliness and worldly passions. I will not allow myself to enter into tempting situations. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. I am anxiously awaiting your return. I know you will help me to live a life that pleases you. Amen

Training Us

The Virtuous Life - Day 218 - Titus 2-11-14 - Training Us - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 218 – Titus 2-11-14 – Training Us – Growing As Disciples

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,  training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,  waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,  who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 (ESV)

Train Me

Here I am. I have renounced my old life in the world. I have left behind worldly passions that once dominated my life. I am now living the life of salvation that you have secured for me. It is my eager desire that you train me to live a godly life. I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want you to purify my thoughts and words and actions so that they are acceptable to you. Make me eager to always do what is good. Is that your prayer? Is that your utmost desire? Is this truly the work you want me to do in you? Do you really want me to train you? Yes, this is my prayer and utmost desire. This is the work I want you to do in me. Yes, I really want you to train me. But there is something of which I am supremely confident. What is that? You have already begun this work in me. This work started in me, long ago, on the day I turned my life over to you. Once you became my Savior and Lord nothing about my life has remained the same. You have been molding and shaping me. You have been changing my heart. You have been transforming my mind. You have been guiding my life. It is you that has given me this eager desire to live out the life of salvation you have given me to live. So, my prayer and desire and eagerness are in alignment with your will. I want what you want for me. Of that, I have no doubt. You want to do this work in me. I want you to do this work in me. I welcome you to do this work in me. Continue to train me. Yes, I will train you. Yes, I have been training you. Yes, I will continue to train you. You are correct, long ago, I began this work in you. My work in you will continue until the day we meet face to face.  For that I am grateful. For that you have all my thanks and praise. Knowing that you are working in me has filled me with hope and peace and joy. That is very good.

There are two things I want you to do as I train you. What is that? Keep my word every before you. Keep on hearing and doing my word. Keep on putting my word into practice. That I will do, what else? Live day by day, moment by moment, with the eager expectation that one day very soon we will meet face to face. That knowledge will fan the flame of your eagerness to live your life fully for me. These two things I will do. That will be very good. Thank you Lord, that you have been, are now, and will continue to train me.

Lord, I have renounced my old life in the world for the new life I have in you. Train me in godliness so I can live the new life of salvation I have in you. Help me to say no to ungodliness. Train me to always think and say and do what is pleasing to you. Amen

Key Question…  How has the grace of God caused an eagerness to do what is godly to grow strong in you?

Living It Out…  Allow the grace of God to train you to say no to ungodliness.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the grace of God will train you to say no to ungodliness.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the grace of God has been training you to say no to ungodliness.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow the grace of God to train you to say no to ungodliness.

To Say No

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Titus 2:11-14 - To Say No - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Titus 2:11-14 – To Say No – Growing As Disciples

Yes And No

You have said yes to me. You have asked me to come into your life. You have asked me to be your Savior and Lord. You have told me that you have had enough of your old life. You no longer want to live according to the patterns, values and practices of the world. You have told me that you want to leave your old life of sin behind you. You have said that you want to live a completely new life in me. Do I have this correct? Is what I am saying true? Yes, I want to live a completely new life in you. You are my Savior and Lord. I no longer want my life to conform to the world. I want to live the new life that you have called me to live with and for you. That is very good.

Your decision to follow me was a one-time decision that will be followed up with many affirmations. You will live a life of continually saying yes to me and no to the world. These affirmations will come moment-by-moment and day-by-day. You will be tested and challenged and tried in and through the circumstances of life. You will be asked again and again if you will continue to leave the world behind you. You will be asked over and over if you will continue to love, follow and serve me.  You will be asked to live an upright and godly life that will shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world. You will not be alone in answering these questions. I will be with you to help you. I will continue to teach you to say “no” to ungodliness as you continue to say “yes” to me.

I have redeemed your life.  I have forgiven you of your sins. I have cleansed you of your unrighteousness. You are mine.  I will teach you. I will train you. I will change your heart. I will transform your mind. I will mold and shape your life. Don’t grow weary. Don’t become faint. Keep your heart and mind and life on me. I will sustain you. I will strengthen you. Will you be eager to go where I guide you? Will you be eager to do what I ask of you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for your grace that made salvation available to me. You have taught me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions while saying “yes” to living the life you called me to live. I eagerly await the day of your return and final redemption. Amen

Key Question…  Why is saying “no” to worldliness and “yes” to godliness something that you eagerly do?

Living It Out…  Say “no” to worldly passions so you can say “yes” to living the life Christ has called you to live.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will teach you to say “no” to worldly passions as you keep on saying “yes” to Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has taught you to say “no” to the world and “yes’ to Him.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you say “no” to worldly passions so you can say “yes” to living your life for Jesus Christ.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Teach – Titus 2:11-14 – Teaches Us – Growing As Disciples

Say “No”

That hasn’t been one of your favorite words. What’s that? You have never liked hearing or having to say the word “no”. What do you mean by that? No, places limits or boundaries on your thoughts, words, and deeds.Yes” or “no” either denies or gives you permission to think, say or do something. How you respond to the words “yes” or “no” will determine if you will follow and obey me. I get it. There have been plenty of times I have known that “no” was the appropriate response to worldly enticements and ungodly living. You have wanted me to say “no” when I ended up saying “yes”. In those cases, I was not obeying you. I was not doing what was pleasing to you. I was living to please myself and fulfill ungodly pleasures and worldly desires. That’s right. I’m sorry about that. I ask for your forgiveness. You are forgiven. I want to follow and obey you. I want to live my life with and for you. In every way and on every day, I want to do what is pleasing to you. That is very good.

I have a question. Go ahead, I’m listening. How will your grace teach me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldliness passions? There have been many times when I wanted to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions. I was weak and gave into to them. I said “yes” to ungodliness and worldly passion when I wanted to say “no” to them. It was like there was a “yes” and “no war raging in my heart and mind that I lost by saying “yes”. You have learned an important lesson. What’s that? You have learned where the battle is being fought. The battleground is in your heart and mind. My grace will change your heart and transform mind. I will give you brand new desires to feel and thoughts to think. How will you do that? My word will change your heart and transform your mind. My word is the tool that my grace will use to teach you to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions. But, you must meet with me in my classroom. Where is your classroom? When does my class with you meet? My classroom is my word. Your class meets when you come to meet with me in my word. As you let my word dwell in you richly your heart will be changed and your mind will be transformed. Will you meet with me? Will you allow my grace to use my word to change your heart and transform your mind? Yes, Lord, I will. Then you will be able to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions.

Lord, teach me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions. Use your word to change my heart and transform my mind so I will be able to live a godly life in an ungodly world. Help to me to passionately serve you as I eagerly watch and wait for your return. Amen
