Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 11:2 – With Humility – Growing As Disciples

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)

Let Go Of Pride

I have not done well on this count. It sounds like you are feeling like you are being judged. We are not in court. You are not being judged by me. That’s good. You do want something from me however. Yes, I do. Tell me what you want. I want to let go of my pride. I want to reject prideful living in all its forms. I don’t want to think prideful thoughts. I don’t want to speak prideful words. I don’t want to do prideful deeds. I see, what then, is the problem? I can’t overcome my pride with my own efforts. That’s right. Relying on your own efforts to overcome your pride would be just one more prideful effort. That’s what I thought. That was a good thought. That thought came from me.

Well, here I am. I am asking for your help. I am so tired of living a prideful life. All my thoughts, words and deeds are filled with pride. Your assessment is not correct. You are discouraged. Not all your thoughts, words and deeds are filled with pride. Is it prideful to come to ask me for my help? Is it prideful to acknowledge that you cannot overcome your own pride? Is it prideful to come to rely on me? Is it prideful to admit the sin of pride that is within you? No, it is not. You are in a good place. It is a good thing to confess your sin. It is a good thing to ask for my help. It is a good thing to come to rely on me.

Don’t think that you should be further along in your life of faith. Don’t think that there should not be so much pride within you. Don’t allow yourself to become discouraged and depressed. Don’t for a moment think that you are a hopeless case. Be joyful that I will help you. Be hopeful that I will change you. Believe that I will work in you and through your life. We both want the same thing. What’s that? You want to live humbly and wisely as my witness in the world. You want to be used by me. You don’t want pride to hinder my working in and through your life. Yes, I want these things. I want you to do your work in my life. I want you to mold and shape me into the person you have called me to be. Do you have faith in me? Do you believe in me? Do you trust me? Yes Lord, I have faith and trust in you. I believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. Then be encouraged. Then be lifted up. Keep on moving forward with me as I do my work in and through your life. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been proud. Pride has led me to think what I should not have thought. Pride has caused me to say what I should not have said. Pride has directed me to do what I should not have done. Help me to reject pride so I can humbly grow in your wisdom. Amen
