Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Compassionate Life – Day 255 – 2 Corinthians 1-3-7 – We Can Comfort Those In Any Trouble – Growing As Disciples

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,  who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.  For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.  If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.  And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 (NIV)

Suffering

This should come as no surprise to you. What should come as no surprise to me? This is a sin broken world. This world does not function according to its original design. This life is full of pain and suffering. I suffered. I felt pain. I suffered loss. So will you. So, don’t think that something foreign or strange has uniquely come against you. If I was ever surprised by pain and suffering and loss, I certainly am not now. Why is that? I have had my sharing of pain and suffering and loss in this life. Yes, that is true. 

Although, I am no fan of pain and suffering and loss. I would not seek to erase it from my life. Why is that? It is the adversity of pain and suffering and loss that drew me to you. In my most painful moments, in my darkest hours I have run to you. I have cried out to you. I have asked for your help. Yes, that is true. In my pain and suffering and loss I have come to know your kindness and mercy and love. I have come to experience your compassionate comfort. Would I have sought you if I had a pain free life? Would I know you less intimately if I never experienced any adversity? Would I love you as I do if I never need your healing or help? I don’t think so. Suffering has drawn me to you. So, I can be grateful for the work that suffering has done in my life. You have learned very valuable and important lessons from suffering. There is no doubt about that.

But there is more that suffering has done in and for and through me. Like what? As I have received comfort from you, I have been able to comfort others with the same comfort that you have given to me. You have used me to help others because I also have suffered and been comforted by you. That is also true. And there is even more. What else is there? Suffering has strengthened me. Rather, you have strengthened me, in the midst of suffering. I am stronger and have more endurance in my faith because I have walked through adversity with you. Yes, it is easy to see why you would never want to erase pain and suffering from your life. Keep on relying to me as you go through adversity. Keep on receiving my comfort. Keep on comforting others with the comfort you receive from me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been crushed by adversity. I have suffered. I have been in pain. My heart has been broken. I have suffered loss. In these moments you have never left me alone. Thank you for your comfort. Help me to comfort others just as you have comforted me. Amen

Key Question…  When has the Lord used you to comfort someone with the same comfort, you have received from Him?

Living It Out…  Allow the Lord to use you to comfort others with the same comfort you have received from Him.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will use you to comfort others with the comfort you have received from Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has used you to comfort others who were suffering.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you comfort others with the comfort you have received from the Lord.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – So That – 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 – We Can Comfort – Growing As Disciples

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.  2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV) 

Give What You Have Received

What you have received from me is not only for yourself. What’s that? Think about all that you have received from me. You have given me so much for which I am so very thankful. Yes, I know that you are thankful to me. That’s not the point that I want to make with you right now. I want you to understand that when you receive something from me I also want you to share it with others. Like what? You tell me. Name something that you have received from me.  

I have received your forgiveness. How can you share my forgiveness with others? I could forgive others just like you have forgiven me. I can also share with others how they can come to you to receive your forgiveness for their sins. Yes, you can. What else?  

I have received hope from you. I know that you have a plan for my life. You created me. You are molding and shaping my life. My life isn’t broken beyond repair. You are the God of second chances. You can and do still want to use me according to your purposes. Yes, I do. I could share with others all the hope I have in you. Yes, you can. I want to use your words to encourage others that are without hope in life. What else?  

I have received your love. I know that you love and accept me. I am your child. You are my Father. I can live my life with and for you. You are on my side. You want to help me. You want me to rely on you. You want me to live in a close and intimate relationship with you. You want me to know you. You want me to hold on to you as I walk through life. I love you because you first loved me. I can share your love with others. I can let others know how much you love them. Yes, that’s right. Do you know that people are desperate to be loved and accepted? They have a void of emptiness in their hearts that only I can fill. You have the best secret in all of life. I love you and you love me. I am with you. I will never forsake you. Is this a secret that you want to keep to yourself? No, I want everyone to know of your goodness, kindness, mercy and love. I want everyone to know the hope they can have in you. Yes, I know that you do.

So how will you comfort others with the comfort that you have received from me? I will share with others all that I have received from you. I will tell others how they can live in a relationship with you. I will tell others how much you love them. Yes, you will. That is what I am calling you to do. Go and tell others about me.

Lord, you have met with me when I have been suffering. You have comforted me in my affliction. You have taught me to rely on you when I have been in need. You have used others to bring comfort into my life. Use me now to comfort others with your comfort. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 – God Of All Comfort – Growing As Disciples

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. Comfort Others

There is no doubt about it. There is no doubt about what? This world is a sin-filled and broken place. This world is not as you intended it to be. How so? You did not intend that this world would be filled with pain and suffering and sickness and death. It was not your plan that we would live with grief and loss and separation. It was not your desire that we would live bruised and battered and broken lives. No, you are correct. This world is nothing like I created it to be. When sin came into this world everything that I made was corrupted and no longer functions according to my original design and plan. That’s too bad. Yes, it is.

There is no doubt about it. There is no doubt about what? You are the God of all comfort. All my pain and suffering and bruising and brokenness and grief and loss has drawn me to you. You have drawn near to me as I have drawn near to you. You are close to the broken hearted. You have never failed to meet with me in my pain and suffering and brokenness. You have healed my hurts. You have bandaged my brokenness. You lifted me up out of the muck and mire of depression, grief and loss. You have been with me to comfort me. You have led me when I have lost direction. You have revived and strengthened me when I have thought that I could go no further. You have continued to lead me to where you wanted me to go. You have kept giving me what you have wanted me to do. You have kept me moving forward with you on the path of life. Yes, I have comforted you. Yes, I will never leave or forsake you. Yes, I will always be with you to help you.

There is no doubt it. There is no doubt about what? You have not comforted me for only my comfort. You have comforted me so that I would be able to comfort others. You want me to become like you. How so? You want me to be kind and loving and compassionate. You want me to draw near to the broken hearted. You want me to comfort others just as you have comforted me. That’s right. Will you comfort others with the comfort you have received from me? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, I know this world is a broken place. I will experience pain and suffering in this life. Thank you that pain and suffering have drawn me to you. In prayer, I have received all your comfort. Thank you for using me to comfort others with your comfort. Amen
