Therefore Honor God With Your Body

The Virtuous Life – Day 199 – 1 Corinthians 6-18-20 – Therefore Honor God With Your Body – Growing As Disciples

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 (NIV)

Honoring Me With Your Body

Will you honor me with your body? That is an interesting question. That question is causing me to think deeply. I have no hesitation in saying yes to you. It is the desire of my heart to honor you with my body. What are you thinking about regarding honoring me with your body? You know my thoughts. Yes, I know your thoughts. I want you to articulate your thoughts to me. When I ask you to share your thoughts with me, it is not for my benefit, it is for your benefit. Here then, are my thoughts. Obviously, if I want to honor you with my body, I will immediately flee sexual immorality when I see it approaching. Tell me more about why it is important for you to immediate flee sexual immorality. Sexual immorality is alluring and enticing and entrapping. The only time to effectively flee sexual immorality is immediately. Later or when I get around to it is far too late. I must immediately remove myself from sexual immorality if I want to have victory over it. That’s right. That’s true. Will fleeing sexual immorality be enough to give you victory over it? No, not at all. As I flee sexual immorality, I must pursue you and the righteous life you have called me to live. One activity, fleeing, is replaced by another activity, pursuing. Really, I can only honor you with my body as I flee evil and pursue you and your righteousness. That is also true. Do both and you will be honoring me with your body.

You have more thoughts about honoring me with your body. You are thinking more deeply on this subject. Let me hear those thoughts as well.  Those thoughts are not clearly formed in me. I’m wondering how I can honor you with my body in other ways. How so? Can I honor you with my body by taking good care of it? I only have one body with which I can serve you. If I don’t take care of my body, my service to you will be greatly diminished and shortened. You are thinking good thoughts. Can I honor you with my body with diet and exercise, sleep, and rest? Can I honor you with my body by how I feed my mind with study and learning? Can I honor you with my body by developing the gifts and talents and abilities you have given to me? Can I honor you with my body by turning all my worries into prayers to you? I know that you want me to live a full life of bearing fruit for your kingdom and bringing glory to your name. Yes, I do. Honoring you with my body, maintaining a healthy body, is an important part of living out that desire. Yes, it is. I will keep on honoring your body in all these ways so I can serve you fully with my body, soul, and spirit. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not play around. I will not linger around sexual immorality. I will immediately flee sexual immorality when I see it approaching. As I flee, I will pursue you and the righteous life you have called me to live. Help me to honor you with my body. Amen

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Run Well

How valuable do you think that you are to me? What price do you think I would be willing to pay for you? Let’s say that your life was gripped in the clutches of evil and completely entwined in sin. What do you think that I would be willing to do to set you free?

I know the answer because you have already done it. You’ve already paid the price. You were willing to come to earth to die in my place as payment for my sin. Your death has set me free and broken the power of sin over my life. I am no longer in its grip and entwined in its bondage.

You missed one of my questions. Which one? The first one. How valuable are you to me? What does my sacrifice say about your value? It says that I am priceless to you. There was no amount of worldly currency that could have bought my freedom. So, you paid for me personally with your own life.

That’s right. That’s exactly what I did for you. I want to ask you again. Why did I die for you? You died to set me free from sin. What did I want from you, once you were free from your sin? You wanted a relationship with me. What do you think that I expect your attitude toward sin to be? You want me to flee from it. Why is that? You don’t want me to be held in its grip or be entangled by it again. Very good. Lets talk about that.

I want you to think about the start of a race. The runners are in the starting blocks. “Ready” and “set” have been announced. The starter’s finger is beginning to pull the trigger. You are the runner in lane three. What are you about to do? I’m about to burst out of the starting blocks with every ounce of energy and speed that I have. The starter’s gun has gone off and you’re running. What are you thinking about? Where are your eyes looking? What has your attention? I’m thinking about running well. My eyes are on the finish line. My attention is entirely on finishing the race.

I want you to flee sin with the same determination of a runner leaving the starting blocks. The race is your life. You will run well as you keep your eyes on me. Don’t let anything from the world crowd into your life to distract you. Your coach in your race through life is the Holy Spirit living inside of you. Listen to him. He will guide every one of your steps. The finish line is heaven. I’m waiting to greet you there. But now, we are cheering for you. Run well, my child. Run well.

Lord, thank you for setting me free. Help me to run away from sexual immorality and sins of every kind. Holy Spirit, I want to honor God with my body. Show me how  sin is attempting to enslave me again so I can sprint away from it.  Amen

Your Body Is A Temple Of The Holy Spirit

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - Your Body Is A Temple Of The Holy Spirit- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Your Body Is A Temple Of The Holy Spirit- Growing As Disciples

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Not Your Own

You are not your own. What does that mean? At one time you thought that you were the center of the universe. Everything revolved around you. What counted was what mattered to you. You decided what was wrong and what was right. What was right was whatever was most comfortable and pleasing to you. You held your own opinions pretty fiercely. No one could tell you anything different once you had your own mind made up. You were the master of your own destiny. You were the captain of your own ship. You were proud, arrogant and very full of yourself. You were like a very full glass that nothing more could be poured into. You had all you wanted. You were all that you wanted. This sounds pretty disgusting. Was I really like that? You tell me. No, I won’t argue the point with you. I was very self-centered and full of myself.

There is only one place that this kind of self-centered life can lead. Where is that? You don’t need to ask me that. You know the answer to your question. This kind of life cannot be sustained. It is a dark and sin filled life that heads toward brokenness. This kind of life leads to disaster. Not always. What do you mean? You led this life. You hit rock bottom. Yes, I did. Was that the end for you? No, it was just the beginning. What did you do? I cried out to you. I turned away from my sinful, self-centered and selfish life. What did I do for you? You rescued me. You redeemed my life. You paid the price of my sin. You made it so that I could be forgiven and cleansed of all my unrighteousness. You filled me with your Holy Spirit. You made it so I could draw near to you and live in a close and intimate relationship with you. Whose are you now? I am yours. You are my Father. You made me to be your child. You are now leading and guiding me through life. You are molding and shaping me into the person you want me to become. What desire have I put inside of you? In every way I want to live my life with and for you. I want to think thoughts, say words, and do deeds that please you. With all my heart and mind and soul and strength I want to bring honor and glory to your name. So, you are no longer your own? No, I am all yours. Yes, you are.

Lord, at one time I lived as if I were all my own. I thought and said and did whatever I wanted. I lived a life of selfishness. At great cost you redeemed me from my life of sin. You made me your own. You filled me with your Spirit and gave me a new life to live. Amen

Temple Of The Holy Spirit

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 131 - 1 Corinthians 6-18-20 - Temple Of The Holy Spirit - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 131 – 1 Corinthians 6-18-20 – Temple Of The Holy Spirit – Growing As Disciples

Honor Me

Do you want to honor me? Do you want to honor me with all your thoughts and words and actions? Do you want to honor me with all that is within you? Do you want to honor me with your body? Yes, I want to honor you with all that is within me. I want all my thoughts and word and actions to honor you. I want my body to honor you. How can all this be true of me? How can I make sure to honor you? First, you must do what you have just done. What have I just done? You have made a decision. You have stated your intent. You have committed to a plan. It is your decision and your intent and your plan to honor me. Yes, this is what I have done. That is very good.

Do you know why it is important that you have stated your decision and intent and plan? I’m not sure. Temptation will certainly come your way. Evil desires will try to entice. Sexual immorality will seek to ensnare you. It is then when you need to remember your decision, intent and plan. It is then that you will need to put your decision and intent and plan into action. How will I put my decision and intent and plan into action? How will I make sure that I will honor you with all that is within me? That is a good question that you must answer. I can think of only one answer. Let me hear your answer. I must flee evil desires that try to entice me. I must run from sexual immorality when it seeks to ensnare me. Why is that? Lingering around evil desires and sexual immorality is the surest way to be enticed and ensnared by them. I must not allow myself to enter tempting circumstances. I must not place myself in the midst evil and enticing desires. I must immediately run from this evil and these temptations. It is not good enough to simply run away. I know that, without a doubt. To where will you run? I will run to you. I will leave evil and enticing desires far behind me, as I run to you. By running away, I will be resisting the devil. By running to you, I will be submitting myself to you. When I do both, the devil and all is evil will flee from me. That is true. That is good. That is right. That is how you will put your decision and intent and plan to honor me into action. That is how you will be able to honor me with all that is within you. That is my decision, intent and plan. That is very good.

Lord, I will honor you with my body. That is my advance decision. I know that your Holy Spirit lives and dwells within me. I don’t want any of my thoughts or words or actions to grieve you. So, I will immediately flee sexual immorality whenever it approaches me. Amen
