Bring To Your Remembrance

The Spirit Empowered Life - Day 129 - John 14:23-27 - Bring To Your Remembrance - Growing As Disciples

The Spirit Empowered Life – Day 129 – John 14:23-27 – Bring To Your Remembrance – Growing As Disciples

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.  “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:23-27 (ESV)

Plenty Of Reminders

I need plenty of those. You need plenty of what? I need plenty of reminders of what I have been taught. I have often been forgetful. I have seldom fully learned a lesson with my first go around. I need constant repetition of what I have been taught, for it to sink into my heart and mind and life. I need to hear and see and sometimes even touch the lesson from multiple vantage points for me to completely grasp what you want me to remember. Oh, and I also need to look back over time, to review what I have gone through, to fully comprehend your hand at work in my life. Even then, without your help, I am incredibly dense at recognizing your activity in my life. Let’s be clear here, you are talking about what you have or haven’t learned as a follower of Christ and a child of God. Yes, that is exactly what I am taking about. Do you feel that you are uniquely dense or especially stupid? Ha, that sounds funny. No, I suppose not. All I know is that I desperately need your help. I need plenty of reminders from you about what I have been taught as I have attempted to love and follow and serve God with all my heart and soul and strength. I want to remember all I have been taught as a follower of Christ and a child of God. That is a very good desire within you. That desire comes from me. That desire is a gift that you have been given. You have a passion to live your life with and for God. Without that desire, you would not remember or care about not remembering what you have been taught. Once you become a follower of Christ and a child of God, I began to teach you and have continued to bring to remembrance what you have been taught. Have you listened perfectly? Have you learned perfectly? Have you put into practice perfectly what you have bee taught? I can answer those question. Go ahead. No, I have not listened or learned or perfectly but into practice what I have been taught. But you are still listening attentively. But you are still following passionately. But you are still desiring to live more fully live as a Christ follower, and child of God. Yes, I am. That is very good. I will continue teach you and bring to your remembrance what you have been taught. I will give you plenty of reminders. Thank you, Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit, I will take God’s word deep into my heart, mind, and life. I will allow you to use God’s word to teach, train, mold, make and guard and guide me. Be my counselor, comforter, and helper. I will listen attentively to what you bring to my remembrance. Amen

The Counselor, The Holy Spirit

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 291 - John 14:23-27 - The Counselor The Holy Spirit - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 291 – John 14:23-27 – The Counselor The Holy Spirit – Growing As Disciples

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.  “All this I have spoken while still with you.  But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:23-27 (NIV)

Counsel

Well, I certainly need that. You certainly need what? I certainly need your counsel. Why do you think you need my counsel? To start with, I am not all that wise. Without your counsel, I have and will likely continue to stumble through life, bouncing from one meaningless endeavor to another. Not only am I unwise; I can’t see the future. Sometimes, maybe quite often, the decisions before me appear to be equal, although that is rarely the case. I need you to guard and guide the course of my life. I need you to keep my life on track. I am no fan of taking missteps that I would need to retrace so I can start over. Doing that has wasted a lot of my time and energy. That is true.  Why else do you need my counsel? Life is difficult. Life is demanding. Life is disconcerting. As you already know, and I am sorry to say, it does not take much for me to become discouraged and depressed. I wish that I was stronger and more resilient than I am. I need you to be my strength. I need you to fill me with your power. I need you to revive and refresh and restore me when I become weary and worn out. Then you need me quite often? Yes, I need you working in and through my life, every moment of every day. It is good for you to acknowledge that you need my help. Can I make a suggestion? Yes, of course, I welcome anything you have to say to me. What is your suggestion? Ask for my help. Ask for my power. Ask for me to work in and through your life throughout all the moments of your day. Rely on me to help you. Stop relying on yourself. Will you rely on my help? Yes, I will. That will be very good. Why else do you need my counsel? In this world, my mind is constantly under attack. My mind is a battleground. The world is constantly bombarding me with its thoughts and opinion and values. Without your help, I am likely to think and speak and act like everyone else in the world. What would you like me to do for you? I would like you to take your word and use it like a sword to fight in me, with me and for me so I can resist temptation and fight against evil. I want you to use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. This sounds like the prayer of your heart. It is. I will hear and answer this prayer. I will do all that you are asking of me. I will be your counselor and comforter, guard, and guide, and helper as you walk through life with me. Thank you, Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit fan the flame of my desire to follow and obey Jesus Christ. Teach me so I will know the will and ways of God. Remind me of everything I have been taught. Powerfully use the word of God to change my heart, transform my mind, and guide my life. Amen

Key Question…  How is the Holy Spirit teaching you so you can understand the will and ways of God?

Living It Out…  Rely on the Holy Spirit to comfort and counsel, guard and guide you through life as you love, follow, and obey Christ.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Holy Spirit will be with you to help you, to follow and obey Christ throughout your life.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Holy Spirit has been with you to help you throughout your life.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you rely on the Holy Spirit to be your comforter, counselor, and helper as you love, follow, and obey Christ.

The Counselor

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - John 14:25-26 - The Counselor - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – John 14:25-26 – The Counselor – Growing As Disciples

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:25-26 (NIV)

Remind You

It is very good that you are in my word. Why is that? I am using my word to teach you. I am using my word to train you. I am using my word to guide you. I am using my word to counsel and comfort you. I am using my word to mold and shape your life. My word is living and active and working in your life. Yes, it is. I can see that. I am very thankful that you are using your word to change my heart and transform my mind. You are helping me to think your thoughts and walk in your ways. Yes, I am.

It is very good that it is your delight to continue to meet with me in my word. Why is that? How would I teach and train and guide you without my word? How would I counsel and comfort you without my word? How would I mold and shape your life if you never met with me in my word? If you did not know my word, how could it be living and active in your life? I don’t know the answer to your questions. I do know that you have given me a burning desire to attentively listen to all that you want to say to me. In your presence I taste of your goodness, kindness, mercy and love. In your presence you restore my soul and refresh my life. When I am weak you make me strong. When I am empty you fill me up. When I am bruised and battered by life you heal all my wounds. You leave me satisfied and always hungry for more of you. There is not a day that I don’t need to hear from you. Continue in my word. Yes Lord, I will.

My word will continue to teach you moment by moment as you follow me. How is that? My Spirit will take what you have heard and seen and learned and received from me and bring it back into your remembrance. My Spirit will make my word living and active in your heart and mind. My Spirit will help you to continually think my thoughts and walk in my ways. My word will be with you when you get up and when you lie down. My word will be with you when you are awake and when you are asleep. My Spirit will use my word to fight like a sword in you, with you and for you. My Spirit will use my word to make you able to stand against temptation. My Spirit will use my word to make you able to bear fruit for my Kingdom and bring glory to my name. Let my Spirit use my word to work in and through you every day of your life. Yes Lord, I will.

Holy Spirit, thank you for being my helper, counselor, comforter, advocate, teacher and friend. Teach me all you want me to know. Bring to my remembrance all you have taught me from God’s word. Help me to put into practice all I have learned from you. Amen
