Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 6:6-11 – Go To The Ant – Growing As Disciples

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest– and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 6:6-11 (NIV)

Sluggard

Do you know what a sluggard is? I thought you might ask me that so I quickly looked it up. A sluggard is a slow and lazy person. That’s right. You do know that I have given you many gifts, talents and abilities? Yes, I know that you have richly blessed my life. I’m glad you chose that word. What word? You used the word blessed. I have richly blessed your life. Why do you think I have richly blessed your life? Why do you think I have given you so many gifts, talents and abilities? What do you think I might expect of you since I have richly blessed your life with so many gifts, talents and abilities? I’m pretty sure that you expect me to use my gifts, talents and abilities to bless the lives of others. You don’t want anything you have given to me to go to waste. You don’t want any of the gifts, talents and abilities that you have given to me to be unused. That’s right. You don’t want me to be slow to serve you. You don’t want me to be lazy in doing the work that you have given me to do for you. That’s also right.

There will come a day in the not too distant future when I will ask you what you did with what I gave you. I will want you to tell me how you used your gifts, talents and abilities to serve me. I will want you to tell me how you have worked hard to serve me. I will want you to tell me how you have blessed the lives of others with the blessings that I have given to you. That day should be filled with joy. On that day we should be able to celebrate how I have worked in and through your life as you have worked hard to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. On that day there is something that I know you want to hear. Yes, there is. What will you want to hear from me on that day? I will want to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” So what will you do now with your life? I will not be slow. I will not be lazy. I will not be a sluggard. I will be filled with joy as I work hard to serve you. I will use all the gifts, talents and abilities that you have given to bless the lives of others. That will be very good.

Lord, I do not want to be lazy in this life. I want work hard and use all the gifts, talents, and abilities you have given to me to serve you. Show me where and how I can best serve you and others in hard work that you give me to do. Amen
