Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Healing – Proverbs 12:18 – The Tongue Of The Wise – Growing As Disciples
Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18 (NIV)
Reckless Words
Well, I have blown it. What have you blown? I have spoken reckless words. I have foolishly spoken words that pierced and cut others. There is no doubt about that. I can’t tell you the number of times that I have foolishly said something that I deeply regretted. It is hard to undo the damage done by reckless words foolishly spoken. Yes, it is. But, you can change. How can I change? How can I stop thinking and speaking and acting foolishly? I’m glad that you realize that all your thoughts and words and actions are tied together. Do you know why that is? Yes, I do. Tell me. Whatever is on my heart and in my mind cannot be hidden. What is in my heart and mind will eventually come out in my words and actions. That’s true. In fact, my words and actions are a very good barometer of the condition of my heart and mind. That is also true.
So, what needs to be changed? We can’t start with my words and actions that’s for sure. I need you to change my heart and transform my mind if I hope to think and speak and act wisely. Yes, you do. Let’s take a step back. I want to ask you a couple questions. Why do you want to think and speak and act wisely? I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want my thoughts and words and actions to be in alignment with your will and your ways. I want to think and speak and act just as you would in whatever situation I find myself in. That’s very good. What else? I don’t want my words to harm others. I want my words to bring healing into the lives of others. I don’t want to regret my words. I want to be thankful for the words that you have given me to speak. Ultimately, I want my words to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Recklessly spoken foolish words will do nothing but hinder my fruit bearing and bring dishonor to your name. I definitely don’t want either of those to be true of the life I am living. That’s good.
So, what will you ask of me? I will ask you to change my heart and transform my mind. I will ask you to give me wise thoughts and words and actions to think and speak and do for you. I will also ask you to help me to speak words that bring healing into the lives of others, so I can bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Those are good prayers. Keep on praying them to me. I will hear and answer your prayers and give you what you are asking of me.
Lord, I have spoken recklessly many times. I have pierced and cut others with foolish and thoughtless words. Forgive me. Change me. Give me wisdom. Help me to think and speak and act wisely. Give me wise words to speak that will bring healing to others. Amen
