Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Matthew 6:6-8 – Knows What You Need – Growing As Disciples

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:6-8 (NIV)

Close The Door

Life is busy. Life is noisy. Life is stressful. Is that a brand-new discovery for you? No, it’s not. I have been aware of the whirl wind of activity life can be. Life can be? Well, my life can be. Can be? My life is. So, what is new for you? I have decided to do something about the busy, noisy and stressful nature of my life. Like what? I’m going to stop all the busyness and noisiness of my life. I’m going to stop being frantic. I am going to refuse to let things get stressful. I have to do something. Why is that? I can barely hear myself think. If I can barely hear myself think, then I certainly won’t be able to hear your voice speaking to me. No, you will not.

So, what are you going to do? What action are you going to take? That’s interesting. What’s interesting? I have to take some form of action to stop another kind of action. You’re right about that. Nothing will change if you don’t make changes. I know what I will do. Tell me, what will you do? I will do what you did. What did I do? You withdrew from all the noise and busyness of life. You carved out a quiet time and special place to meet in prayer with your Heavenly Father. Yes, I did. How often do you think I withdrew to meet in prayer with my Heavenly Father? I doubt that it was a rare occurrence. It would be my guess that praying to your Heavenly Father was a regular part of every one of your days. Good guess. You lived in an intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father. Yes, I did. There was not a day that went by that you did not need to hear from your Heavenly Father. That’s true. So, I am going to close the door. What do you mean by that? I am going to close the door to the noise and busyness of life. I am going to stop to quiet myself. I am going to listen so I can hear. I am also going to take time to speak. I will ask for what I need. I will live in an intimate relationship with my Heavenly Father. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the invitation to meet with you in private prayer. It is my joy to set aside a time and place to talk with you. Thank you for hearing and answering the prayers of my heart. You are so good to me. Amen
