Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Psalm 139:1-6 – You Know Me – Growing As Disciples
O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in–behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Psalm 139:1-6 (NIV)
You Know Me
That is an amazing thought. What’s that? You know me. Of course, I know you. I made you. You are the work of my hands. I know you better than you know yourself. Your most insightful self-discovery does not compare with how well I know you. I know when you sit down. I know when you get up. I know your thoughts before they have even been formed in your mind. I know where you have been, where you are now, and where you will be going in the future. Nothing about you is hidden from me. Before you were born, I saw your very first and last day in this life. There is nowhere you can go and nothing you can do that comes as a surprise me. Before a word comes out of your mouth, I know what you are going to say. I have been with you from the beginning and I will be with you at the end. One day, you will come to live with me forever in heaven. I look forward to that day. In the meantime, my hand is on you. My favor is with you. I will guard your life. I will guide you to where I want you to go. I will give you what I want you to do. I welcome your leadership over my life. That is very good.
I do have something I would like to say. What’s that? You already know what I am going to say. Yes, I do. Even still, it is my joy to hear from you. It is beyond amazing that you know me. It is overwhelming that you can see all my flaws and yet you still love and care for me. My dumbest and darkest thoughts have not scared you away. My thoughtless words and stupid actions have not caused you to give up on me. You see all my missteps, mistakes and sins and you forgive and cleanse me of all of them. Yes, I do. You are so good to me. I am so thankful that you are my Savior and Lord. I am glad that my life is in your hands. I will love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. That is very good.
Heavenly Father, I am so glad you know me intimately. It amazes me that even with such knowledge you still love and care for me. Thank you for being with me wherever I go. Help me to live in close fellowship with you. I want to love you with all my heart. Amen
