Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Parables - The Net - Matthew 13:47-50 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Parables – The Net – Matthew 13:47-50 – Growing As Disciples

“Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:47-50  (NIV)

Let It Down

The net that is let down in the lake, that’s what I want you to do for me. You love to fish don’t you? Yes, I do. Well then, it’s time for you to go fishing for people. I’m calling you to use your life to go fishing for me. I want you to cast out the net of the good news of forgiveness, salvation and new life in me.  Are you willing to do this for me? Yes Lord, I am. Will you go where I send you, when I prompt you? Yes Lord, I will.

You must have your eyes and ears open to what people say to you. You must have your eyes and ears open to me, so that, you will know what I want you to say to them.  I will do that. I will instruct your tongue.  I will put my words in your mouth. I will teach you to boldly declare my word. The net will be cast far and wide. Fish of all kinds will be caught. I want you to examine all the fish. Love and pray for each and every one of them. Some will not choose to follow me. Others will not understand my call on their lives. I will use you to speak for me, so that they will come to understand and follow me.

How does this all sound to you? It sounds overwhelming. Yes, I’m sure that it does. It would be impossible without me helping you every step of the way. Remember, apart from me you can do nothing. Yes Lord, I’ve learned that quite well.

But, I can tell something about you. What’s that? You’re very excited about the idea of me using you. Yes Lord, I am. You have been praying that you will bear abundant fruit for me and my kingdom and glory. Yes Lord, I have. That prayer will not go unanswered. You have been asking me to teach you how to pray. You have been asking me to revive, restore and use you in my service. Yes Lord, I have. Those prayers will not go unanswered. You have also been asking me to teach you to be able to boldly proclaim my word. That prayer will also not go unanswered. Do you believe what I’m saying to you? Do you trust me? Will you allow me to use you? Yes Lord, I will. Good, should we start right now, today? Yes Lord, that sounds very good to me. Well, let’s let down the net to begin catching fish.

Lord, open my eyes and ears to see and hear the cries of people who need you. Help me to let down my net, so that I can be used to catch people for you. Show me where to go, how to pray and what to say to those who need you.  Amen

Key Question… Where is the Lord asking you to let down your net to begin catching people for Him?

Building Yourselves Up

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - Jude 1-20-21 - Building Yourselves Up - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – Jude 1-20-21 – Building Yourselves Up – Growing As Disciples

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. Jude 1:20-21 (ESV)

Built Up In Your Faith

You can take steps with me to build yourself up in your faith. How so? Are you mildly curious or is being built up in your faith in me a priority in your life? I am not mildly curious about being built up in my faith in you. Living in an intimate relationship with you is the priority of my life. I want to know you. I want to love and follow and serve you. I want to live my life with and for you. I want to go and do whatever you ask of me. I want to live a life filled with faith in you. That is very good. Being mildly curious or being half-heartedly interested in being built up in your faith will be of no benefit to you. Of that, I have no doubt. That’s good.

What steps will you take so you can be built up in your faith? I will seek you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will draw near to you in worship. I will meet with you in your word. I will pray in the Spirit all the prayers that you give me to pray. I will follow you to wherever you lead me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I will be at your service. I will allow you to work in and through me. I will allow you to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans that you have in mind for my life. I will place all my faith and hope and trust in you. I will join you in the work that I see you doing all around me. That is an important thought. That is a key word. What is an important thought and key word? Seeing is an important thought and key word. Keep your eyes open. Focus your attention on me. See what I am doing and join me. I will give you prayers to prayer. I will guide you to where you should go. I will give you what you should do. Love, follow and serve me. Then you will continually be built up in your faith. That I will do. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will take steps with you so you can build me up in my faith. I will meet with you in prayer and worship. I will meet with you in your word. I will go and do whatever you ask of me. Help me to live in an intimate relationship with you all the days of my life. Amen

Key Question…  What steps can you take with the Lord to build yourself up in your faith?

Living It Out…  Take steps each day that will allow the Lord to build you up in your faith.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will build you up in your faith as you live in an intimate relationship with Him.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are allowing the Lord to build you up in your faith.

Forget Not All His Benefits

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Sacramental Life - Day 350 - Psalm 103-1-5 - Forget Not All His Benefits - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Sacramental Life – Day 350 – Psalm 103-1-5 – Forget Not All His Benefits – Growing As Disciples

Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.  Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits–  who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,  who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,  who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV)

Not Forget

That is something that I need to remember. What do you need to remember? I need to remember to not forget your benefits. Is that a difficult task? Is that hard to accomplish? It must be. Why do you think it must be difficult and hard to not forget my benefits? Well, the Bible is filled with people who forgot and even took your benefits for granted. Forgetting and taking your benefits for granted seems as common today as it was back then. It should not be so. I wish it were not true. I am embarrassed to say that I haven’t praised and thanked you enough for who you are and all that you have done for me. I know that failing to give you praise and thanks for your goodness is a sin which I willingly and freely confess to you now. Forgive my lack of praise and thanks to you. You are forgiven. What would you like to change? I would like to make praising and thanking you a regular part of my daily prayers to you. That will be very good.

Let me ask you a few questions? Go right ahead, I’m listening. Do you sometimes feel weary and worn out? Do you sometimes lack hope and peace and joy in your life? Would you like to be refreshed and revived and restored to full strength? You know my answer to each one of your questions. Yes, I often feel weary and worn out. Yes, I would like my life to overflow with hope and peace and joy. Yes, I would like to be refreshed, revived, and restored to full strength. I would like to run and not grow weary. I would like to walk and not faint. I would like to be like an eagle soaring in mid-flight. I have no doubt about that. Do you know what you are missing? Yes, I do. I lack all these things in my life because I am not abundantly praising and thanking you. That’s right. Daily, enter my presence with praise and thanksgiving and I will refresh and revive and restore you. As you praise and thank me, I will fill your life with hope and peace and joy. That I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, I know how easy it is to forget and fail to give praise and thanks to you for who you are and all you have done for me. Daily, in my prayers, I will remember all that you have done for me. Fill my life with joy as I give abundant thanks and praise to you. Amen

Key Question…  How are you making sure that you are regularly giving praise and thanks to God for His goodness to you?

Living It Out…  Make praising and thanking God a regular part of your daily prayer life.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God is worthy of all your praise and thanks because of who He is and all He has done for you.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are continually praising and thanking God for His goodness.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you praise God and remember all that He has done for you.

Hear His Voice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Heart - Hebrews 3:15 - Hear His Voice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Heart – Hebrews 3:15 – Hear His Voice – Growing As Disciples

As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15 (NIV)

Hear Your Voice

That is what I want most of all. What do you want most of all? I want to hear your voice. Why do you want to hear my voice? Only a fool would not want to hear your voice. Why is that? If you are making time and taking the effort to speak to me, then you must have something very important to say to me. You must have some guidance to give me. You must have some instruction to teach me. You may even have some warning to protect me. You might even have words that will heal me. The reasons why you might want to speak to me are almost endless. That’s true.

There is another reason why I want to hear your voice. Let me hear it. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. It would be impossible for me to know you if I never listened to you. Hearing your voice tells me that we are living in an intimate relationship. How so? You care about me. You are involved in my life. You are not distant and far removed from me. You are close to me. You are drawing near to me as I draw near to you. You are speaking to me. You have something to say to me. You want your words to accomplish something in or through me, of that I am quite sure. You’re right about that.

How is it that you are making yourself attentive to my voice? How are you making it your priority to live in an intimate relationship with me? Every day, I am withdrawing from the noise and busyness of life. Every day, I am setting aside a time and a place to meet with you. Every day, I am meeting with you in your word. I am being still. I am being quiet. I am listening. I am watching and waiting to see what you will show me. That is very good.

What are you doing with my words once you have heard from me? I am treasuring your words in my heart and mind. I am letting your words dwell in me richly. I am allowing your words to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. So, you are putting my words into practice? Yes, I am. Your words are the foundation of my life. Your words will strengthen and sustain me. Your words will guard and guide me. Your words will protect me as I go through every storm in life. So, I will always listen attentively to your words so that I can put them into practice. That will be very good.

Lord, I don’t want to race through a life filled with noise that prevents me from hearing from you. Help me to slow down and set apart a daily time for me to hear, listen and respond to what you have to say to me. May my heart be fully open and available to you. Amen

Key Question… When are you too busy to hear and listen to the voice of God speaking into your life?

Living It Out…  Set aside a time and a place to make yourself available to hear, listen and respond to God as He speaks to you.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will speak to you as you make yourself available to hear, listen and respond to His voice.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has spoken to you through His word as you have met with Him.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you hear, listen and respond to all that God wants to say to you today as you follow and serve Him.

Do Good To All People

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Let Us - Galatians 6:10 - Do Good To All People - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Let Us – Galatians 6:10 – Do Good To All People – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10 (NIV)

Opportunity

You will have an abundance of opportunities to do good things for others. You have said that you want to be a bright and shining vibrant witness for me in this world. Yes, I have said that. These opportunities to do good things for others are some of the ways that you will be able to shine brightly for me. Don’t expect that these opportunities will always be easy and convenient. Many times, it will not cost you much to show my loving kindness to others. Many other times, it will cost you quite a bit to serve others as I guide you. What will serving you cost me? That’s a very good question. What did it cost me to serve you? It cost you everything to come into the world to serve me. Yes, it did. I gave my life for you. What do you think it should cost you to serve me? Well, on the one hand I know that you gave yourself to me as a gift. My serving you can’t earn what you have already given to me as a gift. No, it cannot. On the other hand, I have said that I want to become like you. That desire to be like you has flowed out of my receiving your receiving salvation as a free gift. Yes, it has. So, by my serving you I am not trying to earn anything. No, you are not. In wanting to be like you, I want to give myself fully and freely to others as a gift. So, I would say that the cost of giving like you gave would cost me everything. What do you mean by everything? Right now, I’m saying without qualification that I will give like you gave. What does that mean? It means I will go where you guide me to do what you ask of me, no matter what the cost. I will use all my gifts, talents, abilities and resources to serve you. I will not say that I am too busy or too tired to serve you. I will not say that what you are asking of me is too difficult. I will not say that I don’t want to serve this or that person. I know that you will even ask me to serve my enemies. Yes, I will. I will be ready to serve anyone, anywhere at any time. When I serve anyone, I will know that I am serving you. When I am giving to others, I will know that I am a bright light shining in this dark world for you. When I am doing what you have asked me to do, I will know that I will bear fruit for your kingdom and your glory. That is what I want to do. So, I am saying yes to you now. I want to take every opportunity, that you give to me, to do good things for other people. That will be very good!

Lord, I will keep my eyes and ears open to opportunities to do good to all people. Help me to be willing to go out of my way to do good things for others. I want to be a witness for you. I will go where you guide me to do what you ask of me. Amen

Key Question…When have you gone way out of your way to do something good for someone?

Living It Out… Listen to the Holy Spirit as He guides you to do good to all people.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will give you an abundance of opportunities to do good to other people.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Holy Spirit has led you to do something good for someone.

Not Become Weary

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Galatians 6:9 - Not Become Weary - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Galatians 6:9 – Not Become Weary – Growing As Disciples

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

Don’t Give Up

I have given you work to go and do for me. My hand is on you. I will use you to bear fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name. You will reap a rich and bountiful harvest for me. I want to go and do whatever you have given me to do for you. I want to accomplish your purposes. I want to fulfill your plans. I am very thankful and glad to hear that your hand is on me. It is my joy to know that you will use me. Nothing would thrill me more than to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to reap a rich and bountiful harvest for you. That is very good.

Having heard all that you have said to me, a question does come to my mind. What question do you have for me? I couldn’t help but wonder if there was an “if” that was part of all that you said to me. Is there anything that is required of me that is part of receiving these promises from you? That is a very good and wise question. What is your answer? Yes, something is required of you to receive all these promises from me. If you want to bear fruit for my kingdom and reap a rich and bountiful harvest you must not give up. You must not grow weary. You must not faint. You must not quit. I understand.

Let’s talk about this a little more. I’m listening. You will never have enough of your own strength to go and do all that I ask of you. If you rely on your own strength you will grow weary, you will become faint and you will want to give up and quit. Remember, that I said that my hand would be on you. I said that I would use you. I remember. You must rely on me for all the strength you will need to go and do all that I ask of you. I will work in you and through you. You will go and do what you could have never do without my help. So, there are really two, “ifs” to receiving all these promises from you? I will bear fruit for your kingdom and reap a rich harvest for you “if” I rely on you and “if” I don’t give up. Is that right? Yes, that’s right. Will you rely on me? Will you never give up? Will you keep on serving me? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will not grow weary. I will not become faint. I will not give up. Instead, I will rely on you for all the strength I will need to keep on doing whatever you ask me to go and do for you. Help me to reap a rich and bountiful harvest for your kingdom and glory. Amen

Key Question… How has the Lord strengthened you to go and do what He has given you to do for Him?

Living It Out… Keep on serving the Lord by continuing to go and do what He has given you to do for Him.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that you will reap a rich and bountiful harvest because you have kept on serving the Lord.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are not growing weary of continuing to serve the Lord.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you never grow weary of going and doing what the Lord has given you to do for Him.

Breeds Quarrels

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Pride - Proverbs 13:10 - Breeds Quarrels - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Pride – Proverbs 13:10 – Breeds Quarrels – Growing As Disciples

Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. Proverbs 13:10 (NIV)

Take Advice

Do you think that you know it all? Can you answer every question? Do you see every side of every issue? Are you needing no council? Are you accepting no advice? Are you so very wise in your own eyes? I would never say yes to even one of your questions. Why is that? I have been foolish. I have been filled with pride. I have been so very full of myself. My own pride has prevented wisdom from being poured into my life. That is not good.

How has your pride filled life been working out for you? It is a dangerous thing to be filled with pride. Why is that? I need guidance. I need direction. My perspective is limited. My range of vision is short sighted. I have made bad choices. I have made missteps. I have wandered to where I should not have gone. I have done what I should not have done. My own pride has left me bruised and battered and broken by life. Others had words of advice I could not hear. Others gave me warnings that I would not heed. I have lived a mistake filled, pride filled, life. That is not good.

Is there some sign that would serve as a warning to you? How will you know if you are living a pride filled life? What will be a signal of danger for you? Those are very good questions. Nothing would be more of a clear signal of my pride than arguing. Why is that? Arguing with others is an indication that I don’t think I need advice. Arguing is a statement that says I know it all. Arguing is signal that says I think I have all that I need. That is a mistake. That is not true. I desperately need advice. I don’t know it all. I know very little. I need all the wisdom and advice and help that you and others can offer to me.

Is there a sign that will tell you that you are in a good place? What will tell you that you are living a humble life that acknowledges that you need help? Listening to you and listening to others is where I want to be and what I want to do. If I’m listening and not arguing, then I will know that I am ready, willing and able to humbly receive advice. Will you humbly listen to me for my advice? Will you humbly listen to others for their advice? Yes, Lord, I will humbly listen to your advice. Yes, I will also humbly listen to advice from others. That will be very good.

Lord, there have been many times when I have acted as an expert. I lived as if I knew it all. I was sure. I was un-teachable. I was wrong. It was a sin. I am sorry. I am ready to receive advice. Help to me to humbly listen to wise counsel from you and others. Amen

Key Question…When have you suffered because you argued instead of humbly accepting advice?

Living It Out… Ask the Lord to give you wisdom so you will be able to humbly receive advice from others.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will use others to give you wisdom that you desperately need.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are humbly accepting advice rather than arguing with others.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you humbly listen to others and take their advice.

God Intended It For Good

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - Genesis 50:20 - God Intended It For Good - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – Genesis 50:20 – God Intended It For Good – Growing As Disciples

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20 (NIV)

Preparation

Well, this life has been no cake walk. What do you mean by that? This life has not been easy. How so? I have suffered significant setbacks, great defeats and miserable trials. I’m not complaining. I’m not venting. I am merely observing. I see. What have you also observed? There have been times that I thought I was all alone in my setbacks, defeats and trails. There have been times I have wondered when and if you would help me. There have been times I have questioned when you would come to my aid and answer my cries for help. Why are you merely observing? Why aren’t you complaining? Why aren’t you venting? I see things quite differently now. How so? I have been quite mistaken. I have surely been wrong. You have never left me all alone. You have always been with me to help me. I could see no purpose or plan or reason for my setbacks, defeats and trials. I couldn’t fathom how you could ever use the bad things that were happening to me for any good purpose or plan. Yet, that is exactly what you have done. Let’s talk more about that. I’d like that.

How have I been able to use the setbacks, defeats and trials you have gone through in life? You have developed my character and strengthened my faith in every difficulty you have led me through. You have used every trying circumstances to mold and shape me into the person you have wanted me to become. You have been preparing me for the work you have given me to do. You have had purposes and a plan I could not see. Even now, I don’t see your purposes and plan perfectly. I could not then and cannot now know how you plan to fully use me. But, I can see enough to know that nothing I have gone through has gone to waste. I know that you have not been the author of any of my pain and suffering. You have not brought difficulties on me. This sin broken world brings these in abundance to us all. But, not only am I not complaining or venting I am just the opposite. How so? I am thankful beyond measure for how you have been, are now, and will be working in and through my life. So, I welcome you to continue your work. Help me to know you and your purposes and plan for my life. I am thankful that my life is in your hands. I am grateful for your incredible goodness to me. It is my desire to love you with all my heart and soul and strength. It is my hope to be fully used by you. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is very good. Keep on working in and through my life. Yes, I will. You can be sure of that.

Lord, I have suffered significant setbacks, great defeats and miserable trials. Sometimes, I have wondered where you were. Sometimes, questioned when and if you would help me. Now, I can clearly see that you have been with me to help me all along. Amen

Key Question…  When have you wondered how the Lord would work good out of something bad that had happened to you?

Living It Out…  Look back over your life to see how God has been able to use something bad to accomplish something good in your life.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will be able to use what seems bad to you for His good purposes and plan for your life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has used what seemed bad to you for His good purposes.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you have faith to believe that the Lord will use what seems bad to you for His good purposes and plan.

Take Heed Lest He Fall

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Therefore- 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 - Take Heed Lest He Fall- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Therefore- 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 – Take Heed Lest He Fall – Growing As Disciples

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (ESV)

Way Out

There are a few things I want you to know about temptation. What do you want me to know? You will experience temptations throughout your life. They will never end. You will never be above temptation. Don’t think that you will ever be so strong that you won’t have to worry about resisting temptation. I was tempted. You will be tempted. This should come as no surprise to you. It doesn’t.

Speaking of surprises, most of your temptations will come as no surprise to you. You should be able to think about when, where, why and how you will be tempted. Do you know why knowing this is important? I’m not sure. Take a guess. I should not allow myself to get into tempting situations. I should remove myself from tempting circumstances. I should remove anything from my life that will feed temptation and cause me to sin. Good guess, that’s exactly right. You will eliminate a lot of temptation simply by guarding where you go, what you do and what you allow into your life. Stay away from every evil temptation that will cause you to sin. Yes Lord, I will.

You will never experience a temptation that is unique to you. Others will experience temptations just like yours. Never think that you have some uniquely powerful temptation that cannot be resisted and overcome. I will never let you be tempted beyond your ability to resist. That’s good. That’s not all.

I will always provide you a way of escape out of temptation. You will need to watch for your way of escape. You will need to take your way of escape immediately. Don’t linger. Don’t delay. You must immediately take the way of escape that I will provide for you. Do you know why you must act immediately? I think so. If I delay taking my way out of temptation, I will fall into temptation and sin. Yes, you will. There is more.

I will also strengthen you against temptation. How will you do that? My word will make you able to stand against temptation. My word with strengthen you. My word will change you as you let it dwell in your heart and mind.  The word of God made me able to resist temptation. The word of God will make you able to resist temptation. Will you let the word of God dwell in you richly? Will you remove yourself from what will feed your temptation to sin? Will you take the way of escape out of temptation that I will provide for you? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will not be overconfident about my ability to stand against temptation. There would be no reason for that. I know you won’t let me be tempted beyond my ability to stand against it. I will watch for and take the way out of temptation you provide for me. Amen

My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word!  When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes!  Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.  My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!  Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law!  I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me.  I cling to your testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame!  I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! Psalm 119:25-32 (ESV)
