Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 64 – 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 – Stay Calm – Growing As Disciples
Stay calm; mind your own business; do your own job. You’ve heard all this from us before, but a reminder never hurts. We want you living in a way that will command the respect of outsiders, not lying around sponging off your friends. 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 (MSG)
My Witness
Are you staying calm? Are you minding your own business? Are you doing the job you have been given? Is there a reason that you are asking me these questions? What point are you wanting to drive home with me? What insight and understanding do you want to give me? It is wise of you to know that I am wanting to make something very clear to you. What do you want to make clear to me? You tell me. I know you want me to be calm. I know you want me to mind my own business. I know you want me to do the job I have been given. Yes, all this is true. But let me ask you, what job have you been given? That is the key and vital question. I have given you a job to do for me in this world. Don’t think that I have given you the job of being a doctor or lawyer or carpenter or any other career. In all these careers, I have given you, and every one of my followers, a job to do for me in this world. How you conduct yourself will make you effective or ineffective in the job I have given you to do for me. Then, I must understand what job you have given to me and every one of your followers. Yes, but I think you already know the job I have given to you. Tell me what you know. I know that you want me to be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. I know that you want the conduct of my life and the words of my mouth to draw others to you. It is my job to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I do. That is your job. Will you be able to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name without relying on me? No, I will not. Will you be able to stay calm, mind your own business, and do your job without my help? No, I will not. Will you rely on me? Will you allow me to use you as my witness in the world? Will you allow me to help you to do the job you have been given? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.
Lord, help me to mind my own business and stay calm in all circumstances as I faithfully continue to do my own job. Help me to live a life that commands the respect of outsiders who do not yet know you. Help me to be a witness that helps draw others to you. Amen
