Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 61 – Matthew 6:19-24 – Your Heart – Growing As Disciples
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:19-24 (NIV)
Your Heart
Where is your heart? What does that mean? What is the focus of your attention? Where do you spend your time, talent and resources? Where do you expend your energy? What occupies the thoughts of your mind? What are your hopes and dreams and desires? What are your goals? What do you hope to have accomplished when your life is at its end? You have asked a lot of questions. I am not sure how to answer them. Let me make this point clear for you. You can focus on the things of earth or you can focus on the things of heaven. If your focus is on the things of earth your focus will not be on the things of heaven. The opposite is also true. If your focus is on the things of heaven, then your focus will not be on the things of earth. I could also state this point in a completely different, more concrete way. I’d like that. You cannot love and be devoted to money and at the same time love and be devoted to me. How is that? That is quite clear. That’s good.
I would like to make a point quite clear. I’m listening. I want to be fully devoted to you. I want all that I am, have, and hope to be, to be fully available to you. I am at your service. I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I have no desire to store up treasure on earth. I want to be able to store up treasure in heaven with you. That is my prayer. That is my desire. That is my goal. That is a very good prayer and desire and goal. How do you hope to store up treasure in heaven with me? I want to shine brightly in the world for you. I want others to see your light and life being lived out in and through me. I would like others to be drawn to you because of how you have used me in their lives. I would like to have a multitude one day say that they are in heaven because of how you have worked through me. That, I will do. I will hear and answer your prayer. I will use you. I will make you able to store up treasure in heaven with me. Thank you, Lord.
Lord, I want my heart to be focused on you. I do not want my heart focused on the things of this life. I will not store up treasures on earth. Help me to store up treasure in heaven with you. Help me to minister to others. Powerfully use me to lead others to you. Amen
