Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 15 – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – Love Is – Growing As Disciples

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)

Love Looks Like

I have no doubt that this is what love looks like. I also have no doubt, whatsoever, that this is what you look like as well. I am equally sure that my life does not measure up to this description of love. Why is that? I’m not sure. I’m human. I am a sinner. Occasionally, I am some of these things in part. I am never all of these things in full, nor do I even come close to displaying a significant portion of these qualities all together at one time. I may be patient and proud. I may be kind and boastful. I may be truthful and angry. What is quite clear, is that, I desperately need your help. Why do you need my help? You want me to become like you. I want to become like you. I want to be able to demonstrate your love to the world. I want your love to flow through me. I want to love others just as you love me. I want others to see your love in me so that they will be drawn to you. I’m sure we have the same goals. We do have the same goals, don’t we? Yes, we do have the same goals. I want you to love others just as I love you. I want you to follow my example. I do want you to become like me. That’s good. Yes, it is very good.

Well, I know what will not work. I know what has not worked. What’s that? It will not work, it has not worked, for me to simply try harder to love others. I have tried that over and over year after year. My efforts have met with miserable failure. Yes, I have noticed. Let me ask you a question. Go ahead, I’m listening. Didn’t you say you wanted to become like me? Yes, I did. How will you become like me? I will become like you as I spend time with you. I will become like you as I draw near to you. I will become like you as I walk with you. I will become like you as I am in your presence. Yes, you will. As you become like me, what won’t you need to try harder to do? I will not need to try harder to love others because you will be changing me and making me more like you. Loving others will be the biproduct of you making me to be more like you. Now, you get it. Now, you understand. Yes, I do. That is very good.

Lord, I have not loved others just as you have loved me. My love for others has been far from perfect. Forgive me. Help me. I want to love others like you love me. Develop in me the highest and best qualities of love. Help me demonstrate your love to the world. Amen

Love Never Gives Up

The Compassionate Life - Day 260 - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7- Love Never Gives Up - Growing As Disciples

The Compassionate Life – Day 260 – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7- Love Never Gives Up – Growing As Disciples

Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, doesn’t have a swelled head, doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,  Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,  Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (MSG)

Never Give Up

I won’t do that. That will not be true of me. What won’t you do? What will not be true of you? I will never give up on loving others with your love. I won’t quit. I will keep on loving others just as you have loved me. You have set before me powerful examples of how to love others deeply from my heart. What will my love look like as it flows in and through you to others? Your love flowing through me will be persistent and consistent and unwavering. Your love flowing through me will be humble and sacrificial. As I love others with your love, life will not revolve around me. I will not have a prideful, self-serving, attitude that continually seeks what I want and desire. Your love will help me to see and bring out the best in other people. As I love others with your love, I will not keep score, fly off the handle, get angry or even when I have been hurt or harmed by others. I will continually remember that you even loved your enemies. Your love will help me to put up with any and every difficultly that comes my way. I will always trust you. I will continually rely on your help.  I will keep on moving forward with you, never looking back, so that I will never give up on loving others. That will be very good. You will live a life that pleases me. As you never give up on loving others, I will powerfully use you. My hand will be on you. My favor will be with you. I will powerfully use your life. You will shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world. Others will come to know and love and follow and serve me because they will have seen my love flowing through you. You will live a live that bears fruit for my kingdom and brings glory to my name. That is my hope. That is my dream. That is the desire that you have placed within me. And I will fulfill these desires that you have in your heart. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, help me to never give up loving others with your love. Keep me from having a “me first” attitude. Use me to see and bring out the best in others. Help me to never keep score or fly off the handle when others hurt me.  Love others in and through my life. Amen

Love Is

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Love - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7- Love Is - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Love – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7- Love Is – Growing As Disciples

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NLT2)

Love Is

I don’t measure up. What do you mean by that? If love is all of these things, then I am not loving. My life does not measure up to this standard of love. How so? If I were to insert my name wherever love appears in these sentences, I would come up short. I cannot say that I am always patient and kind. There have been many times that I have been jealous or boastful or proud or rude. I’m not talking about in the distant past either. I have demanded my own way. When I have not gotten my way, I have been irritable and resentful. When I have been wronged, I have not been above keeping score. It has not been easy for me to forget and let go of hurts and forgive someone who has hurt me. Maybe, I have not rejoiced at injustice. I hope so. I think so. I doubt that I have rejoiced whenever and wherever the truth has won out. Do you see my point? This kind of love is not being fully lived out in my life. I wish it were. I want it to be. Is that your hope? Is that your prayer? Are you asking me to grow my love in you? Are you asking me to completely change your heart and mind and life? Yes, I am. That’s good.

Then let’s start at the beginning. Where is the beginning? I am the beginning. You love me because I first loved you. Yes, I do. I will do my work in you. I will make you able to love others just as I have loved you. I will mold and shape you. I will teach and train you. You will become like me as you live in an intimate relationship with me. I believe that to be true. That’s good. Because you believe, what won’t you do? I will never give up. I will never lose faith. I will continue to be hopeful. I will endure through every circumstance. Your love will continue to work in me. Your love will continue to change me. Your love will make me able to love others just as you love me. Yes, it will. I’m counting on your love. That is very good.

Heavenly Father fill me with your love. Make me patient and kind. Help me to not be envious, boastful, proud or rude. Keep me from being self-seeking or easily angered. Guard me from anger, resentment and evil of every kind. Build all of your qualities of love in me. Amen
