According To His Will

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Prayer Filled Life – Day 109 – 1 John 5-13-15 – According To His Will – Growing As Disciples

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us–whatever we ask–we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:13-15 (NIV)

My Will

Do you know my will? That is a very good question. Often times, I do not know your will. Would you like to know my will? That is also a very good question. Why is that? I can think of times when I liked my will. What does that mean? It means that I didn’t want to know your will if it differed from my will. I preferred my will over your will. That’s honest, that is wise to acknowledge. How about now? I want to know and do your will. If my will is not in alignment with your will, I want to know. I will change my will to line up with your will, that is my desire, plan, and goal. I want to love and follow and serve you with all that is within me. I want to go and do whatever you ask of me without any wavering or hesitation. That is very good. Let’s take a step back for a moment. I have a few questions for you. I’m listening. When you wanted your will, what kind of prayers did you pray? I prayed prayers that were according to my will. What kind of answer could you expect from me when you prayed prayers according to your will? I could expect that they would not be heard or answered. If they were answered, the answer would have been no. Why is that? You wanted and still want my will and my prayers to be in accordance with your will. You want me to be in alignment with you in my thoughts and words and actions. You want me to pray prayers that you can hear and answer. Yes, I do. So, if you don’t know my will what will you do? If you do not know how to pray what will be your course of action. I think it would be wise to assume that I don’t know your will or how to pray. Why is that? Then I will draw near to you in prayer. Then I will draw near to you in your word. Then I will draw near to you in praise and worship. When I seek you with all my heart, I will know you and your ways. When I draw near to you, you will draw near to me. You will give me prayers to pray. You will guide me to pray prayers that you will hear and answer. Yes, you can be sure of that. Will you draw near to me in prayer, in my word and in praise and worship? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good. Then I will surely hear and answer your prayers. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, looking back over time, I can recall prayers I prayed that were clearly not according to your will. They were according to my will, but not yours. Help me to prayer prayers that are according to your will. Help me to pray prayers that you will hear and answer. Amen

He Hears Us

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 212 - 1 John 5:13-15 - He Hears Us - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 212 – 1 John 5:13-15 – He Hears Us – Growing As Disciples

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.  And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.  And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. 1 John 5:13-15 (NLT)

I Will Hear You

Do you know that to be true? Do I know what to be true? Do you believe that I will hear you? Do you believe that I will answer your prayers? Yes, I believe that you will hear me. Yes, I believe that you will answer my prayers. Will I answer every prayer that you pray? No, I’m sure that you will not answer every prayer that I pray. What prayers will I not hear and answer for you? You will not hear and answer prayers that are not pleasing to you. What kind of prayers are not pleasing to me? You will not hear and answer prayers that are outside of your will. You will not hear and answer prayers that are not according to your purposes and plans. You will not hear and answer prayers that are outside of your timing. You will not hear and answer prayers that would ultimately be unhelpful or unhealthy for me. You will not hear and answer prayers that are self-centered, self-indulgent and self-sufficient. You will not hear and answer my prayers if they are filled with my own sin. That is true. But I should stop here for a moment and clarify my thinking and response to your question. Go right ahead. “No”, is an answer to prayer. Sometimes, “no” is your very best answer to my prayer. I can think of many prayers that I am now glad that you did not answer. So, you often hear and answer my prayers, that are not pleasing to you, with a “no” because you have something more or something else or something better for me. That is true. “Not yet”, is also an answer to prayer. I am often impatient. I hate to wait. There have been many times that you have heard and answered my prayers with a different timing or in a different way than I could have ever anticipated. You have often delayed hearing and answering my prayers until I was ready to receive what I wanted to give me. That is also true.

What kinds of prayers are pleasing to me? Before I answer that question, I need to clarify one more thing. What’s that? I need you to guide my prayers. I need you to teach me how to pray. I need you to help me to know what prayers would be pleasing to you. Yes, you do. So, prayers that are reliant on you are on the right track. Yes, they are. Prayers that bring you honor, and glory are pleasing to you. Prayers asking for your help are pleasing to you. Prayers asking for wisdom are pleasing to you. Prayers of adoration, confession and thanksgiving are pleasing to you. Prayers of intercession for others are pleasing to you. Prayers that are according to your will are pleasing to you. Prayers that will accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans are pleasing to you. Yes, all these prayers are pleasing to me. Yes, I will hear and answer these prayers. Will you keep on praying prayers that are pleasing to me? Yes, I will. That will be very good. Then I will hear you. Then I will answer your prayers. Thank you, Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father guide my prayers. Help me to pray prayers that are good and right and true. Help me to pray prayers that are according to your will and purposes and plans. Help me to pray prayers that are pleasing to you, that you will hear and answer. Amen

You Have Eternal Life

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – 1 John 5:13-15 – You Have Eternal Life – Growing As Disciples

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. He Hears Me

You heard my call. You turned your life over to me. You have come to believe in me. You have eternal life. That’s very good news. I feel such peace knowing that you are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and Heavenly Father. I am your child. I can place all my hope and trust in you. You have my life in your hands. You will lead me now and forever. You have a purpose and a plan for my life. I can rest here in your presence today, tomorrow and forever. Yes, you can rest in me.

I can live in a close and intimate relationship with you. I will walk with you through life. You will hold on to me as I hold on to you. You will draw near to me as I draw near to you. Every day, I can talk to you about anything and everything. I’m not sure how to pray in ways that will please you. I know that you will teach me how to pray. I know that you will bring subjects of prayer to my heart and mind. I know that it will please you that I will come to you to allow you to teach me how to pray. I know that it will please you that I will come to you to rely on you. I know that it will please you that I will ask you for what I need. I am humbly asking you to teach me how to pray in ways that please you. You can be sure that I will teach you how to pray. You are right that I will be pleased that you come to me to rely on me.

I will pray prayers filled with faith and trust in you. I will pray prayers asking you for what I need. I will bring others to you who are in need of prayer. I will believe that you are hearing and will answer my prayers according to your purposes and plans. I am sure that I will not always understand your answers to my prayers. That will not trouble me. I know that you are my Heavenly Father. You are good and kind and gracious to me. Your wisdom is far above mine. Your answers to my prayers of yes, no or not yet will all be according to your will. I trust you with my life. You have a good plan for me. I will follow you wherever you lead me to do whatever you ask of me. That will be very good. Keep coming to meet with me in prayer. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, thank you for my new and eternal life I have in you. You have made it so I could come to know and believe in you. Guide me to pray prayers that are pleasing to you. Hear and answer my requests for what I need from you. Amen
