Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wait – Acts 1:4-5 – Wait For The Gift – Growing As Disciples

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:4-5 (NIV)

Don’t Leave

I won’t leave. I won’t take one step. I won’t move forward without your instructions. I have launched off on my own far too many times. I have seen the failure of my own efforts often enough. I have seen the fruitlessness of operating under my own power and strength. I want no more of that. I have had enough failure. I have experienced enough disappointment. I have learned that apart from you I can do nothing. I cannot accomplish your work without your power. I cannot bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name without your help. That’s a valuable lesson to learn. Yes, it was a valuable and costly lesson to learn. It would have been far costlier had you never learned this lesson. That’s right. I get that. I am thankful for every lesson you teach me. I don’t ever want to look back from heaven and see that I could have born more fruit for your kingdom and brought more glory to your name if only I had relied on you more. That’s a very good thought to think.

So, here I am. I am watching and waiting and listening for your instructions. I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I will start when you say start. I will stop when you say stop. I will not lag behind you. I will not run ahead of you. I will not wander away to the left or to the right. I will follow you. In every way I will rely on you. I want your power. I need your strength. I am asking you to fill me with your Holy Spirit. Work in and through my life. Do in and through me what I could never do by myself. Use me however you see fit. Help me to accomplish your purposes and plans. These are the prayers I am praying to you. These are the desires of my heart.

I have heard and I will answer your prayers. I will use you. I will guide you. I will give you my power and strength. I will fill you with my Holy Spirit. I will make you able to do all that I have asked of you. I will help you to bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. You and others will know that I have worked in and through your life. You will be a witness for me in the world. You will accomplish my purpose. You will fulfill my plans. You will have no regrets as you follow and serve me.

Lord, I will sit and wait and listen for your instructions. I won’t rush a decision and choose a course of action without your guidance. I won’t rely on my own strength to do your work. I will rely on the Holy Spirit to empower me to bear fruit for your kingdom. Amen
