Dwell In You Richly

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Colossians 3:16 - Dwell In You Richly - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Colossians 3:16 – Dwell In You Richly – Growing As Disciples

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

Dwell Richly

Now those are two very important words. What’s that? Dwell and richly, those are the words that I want you to consider. What would your life look like if my word dwelt in you richly?  I know one thing that would need to happen for sure. What’s that? I would need to set a time and a place to meet with you in your word on a daily basis. Your word dwelling in me richly will never happen on a “when I get around to it, hit and miss basis.” If I don’t set a time and a place to meet with you in your word it will never happen on anything close to a regular basis. So, you want to make meeting with me a priority in your life. Yes, I do. That has been a big struggle for you. Yes, it has been. You have tried to meet with me in my word on a regular basis many times before, isn’t that true. Yes, I have. Were your efforts successful? No, they were not. Why is that? I didn’t really take the time to develop a strategic plan to meet with you. I was doomed to failure right from the start. What do you mean by that?  I started with unrealistic goals. Like what? I said to myself that I would meet with you every morning for an hour. What was wrong with that? I haven’t been a morning person and the length of time I selected with was far too long, at least to start. So what would happen? I would have very short-term success, end up getting up late and need to rush off to work without meeting with you. Then I would give up and feel very guilty about my failed effort.

That was then. What about now? I have developed a regular pattern of meeting with you in your word. What does your regular pattern look like? How did you get started? First of all I didn’t pick an exact time to meet with you. I picked a particular space in my day. When was that? I said that I would meet with you in your word every night just before I went to bed. This worked well for me because nothing would compete with this space in my day. I could have picked right after work or any other space in my day that didn’t face a lot of competition for my time. So, you set apart a sacred time in your day that would be our time to meet together in my word. Yes, I did. Did you also select a particular place? Yes, I did. I should tell you that I wasn’t alone in selecting a time and place to meet with you. Tell me about that. My spouse and I made this decision together. So, you could each encourage other then? Yes, that’s exactly what has happened. We selected our bedroom as the place where we would meet together with you in your word. So, every night for many years now we have been meeting with you in your word without fail. We started really small. How small? I’m almost embarrassed to say that we started reading your word and praying together for five minutes just before bed every night. Why would you almost be embarrassed at only meeting with me for five minutes? Five minutes doesn’t sound anything like letting your word dwell in me richly. But, you’re not embarrassed are you? No, I am not. Why not? That small amount of time with you in your word gave us a taste of meeting with you. Now, we hunger and thirst for meeting with you in your word. Our time meeting with you in your word and praying together at night has grown dramatically. We now also have our own separate time and place to meet with you in your word. Meeting with you in your word has now become an absolute priority in our lives. We now are truly letting your word dwell in us richly. Yes, you are and that is very good and pleasing to me. Tell me the prayer that was on your heart when you first began to meet with me in my word. Here it is…

Lord, I will meet with you daily to pray and read your word. I have picked out a time and a place. This will be our time. I know it’s just a beginning. I want you and your word to dwell richly in me. I’m excited. Let’s begin right now. Amen

In Your Hearts Toward God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - In Your Hearts Toward God - Colossians 3:16 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – In Your Hearts Toward God – Colossians 3:16 – Growing As Disciples

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 NIV

Filled With Gratitude

What do you think will happen if you let my word dwell in you richly? Do you know what I mean when I say the word, “dwell”? Yes, I do. It means to let your word really make its home in my life. Yes, that’s right. How about that word, “richly” what do you think that might look like in your life? If your word is really dwelling richly in my life then all my thoughts, words, and actions will be guided by your word. How do you think that might begin to happen? First of all I know that a meager diet of your word is not what you have in mind. I cannot expect your word to dwell in me richly if I only hear it now and then and here and there or once in awhile. That amount of your word is like a little nibble that will not feed and sustain the kind of life you want me to live with and for you. No, it will not.

Does it seem to you that you are faced with a choice? Yes, it does. Tell me what you think the choice is that you are being asked to make. Will I really let your word dwell in me richly? That is the question that I need to answer by making a choice. Yes, you are correct. How are you going to answer that question? There is nothing I would rather have than your word dwelling in me richly. That is a very good answer. Now comes the real test. What’s that? You can’t say yes and take no action. If you want my word to dwell in you richly then you will have to set aside time to be with me in my word so that it will really dwell in you richly. The time you set aside to be with me in my word will just be the beginning of my word dwelling in you richly. What do you mean by that?

When my word is really dwelling in you richly, it will never leave you. My word will be in your heart and on your mind all the time. My word will make you wise and able to teach others. My word will put songs of praise on your lips that you will want to sing to me. Your life will be filled with joy because you will know me and my word. I will speak to you and guide your life by my word. You will come to me with your heart filled with gratitude for how I have changed your heart, mind and life by my word. Yes Lord that is exactly what I want.

Lord, thank you for your word. It is my delight to let your word dwell in me richly. Thank you that you are changing my heart and transforming my mind with your word. Your word has put songs of praise and gratitude on my lips. Amen

Dwell in You Richly

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 126 - Colossians 3:16 - Dwell In You Richly- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 126 – Colossians 3:16 – Dwell In You Richly- Growing As Disciples

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

Dwell

I will allow your word to dwell in me richly. How will you allow my word to dwell in you richly? Why will you allow my word to dwell in you richly? When will you allow my word to dwell in you richly? I didn’t see those questions coming. Do you have answers for them? Yes, I do. That’s good. Why is it important that I have answers to these questions? If you cannot answer these questions, then it will be unlikely that you will actually let my word dwell in you richly. I see. Then let me state my answers to your questions. I’m listening.

I will let your word dwell in me because your word instructs me to do so. I don’t need to understand every one of your instructions for me to obey them.  I will follow and obey you even when I do not fully understand what you are asking of me. In this case I do understand why you are instructing me to let your word dwell in me richly. That’s good. You will use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. You will use your word to guide my life. You will use your word to set me free from the evil that is in the world. You will use your word to help me to resist temptation and stand against evil. You will use your word to make me wise in all that I think, say and do. Finally, and most importantly, you will help me to come to know and love and follow and serve you as I allow your word to dwell in me richly. Yes, I will use my word will do all of these things for you.

I will meet with you daily with you in your word so that I will be allowing it to dwell in me richly. Meeting with you will be the priority of my life. I will not give you left over time that may never come. Our time together will be carved out and set apart. We will have a special time and place when we will meet together. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than listen to you. That will be very good.

I will read and study your word. I will meditate on and memorize your word. I will pray and teach your word. In every way possible I will grab a hold of your word so that it will grab a hold of me. I will truly allow your word to dwell in me richly. I will allow your word to form my thoughts, fill my mouth and guide my actions. I will allow your word to help me to know your will and your ways. I will allow your word to make me wise. Finally, and most importantly I will obey your word by putting into practice as I love, follow and serve you. That will be very good.

Lord, I will allow your word to dwell in me richly. I will read and study your word. I will meditate on and memorize your word. I will pray and teach your word. I will put your word into practice. Use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. Amen

Word Of Christ

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Colossians 3:16 - Word Of Christ - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Colossians 3:16 – Word Of Christ – Growing As Disciples

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

All Wisdom

Do you want wisdom from me?  Yes I do.  That is what I have been asking for quite regularly.  Yes, you have.  That tells me that your request is really important to you.  You are very serious about wanting my wisdom.  Yes, I am.

What do you think my wisdom will do for you?  Your wisdom will help me to know and do your will.  It will guide me to make the choices that you want me to make.  Yes, it will help you in that way.

Will my wisdom do more than help you make right choices?  Yes, I probably have no idea of the extent of the importance and value of having your wisdom.  There is surely an inexhaustible list of the benefits of your wisdom.  But wisdom is not just an activity of the mind and a wise way of thinking and acting.  Wisdom involves the heart.  Why do you say that?  I know that you are wisdom itself.  Loving, knowing and following you has changed me and is making me wise as I live with and for you.

How do you think my wisdom will come to you?  Wisdom will come to me from you by asking for it.  My asking must be filled with earnest desire to have what I have asked for from you.  It is not enough to mildly desire wisdom.  I must want and desire it with all my heart.  I must seek wisdom from you as if it were more valuable than silver or gold, which it is.  Yes, it is.  I know that when I am asking for wisdom, I’m really asking for something else.  Tell me what that is.  I want to know you.  Knowing you will make me wise.  Wisdom is really what comes out of drawing near to you and living in your presence.  Yes, it is.  It pleases me that you know and understand this.

What have I used to teach you my wisdom?  How have I been changing your heart and transforming your mind?  You have been using your word.  You have been replacing my old thoughts and ways with your thoughts and ways as I have let your word dwell in me richly.  Letting my word dwell in you richly is part of your earnest desire to know me and have my wisdom, isn’t it?  Yes, it is.

What will you do with my wisdom as I give it to you?  I will let it overflow my life so that it comes out of my life and blesses others.  This will be in all that you think, say and do, won’t it?  Yes, it will.  Will you teach and counsel others with the wisdom that I give to you?  Yes Lord, I will.

Do you believe that I will abundantly bless your request for wisdom from me?  I have no doubt whatsoever.  Yes, and you are right to be certain about that.

Lord, help me to say yes to all that you want to do for me, in me and through my life so that I can shine brightly in the world. Let all the good deeds that you lead and enable me to do bring thanks, praise, honor, and glory to you. Amen
