Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – 365 Days Of Guidance – Day 8 Exodus 3:2-4 – I Will Turn Aside – Growing As Disciples

And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Exodus 3:2-4 (ESV)

Paying Attention

How do you think you will hear from me? I’m not sure what you are asking of me. Will I shout to you over the noise of the world? Will I pull you out of the busyness of your life by making you come to a complete stop? You might, anything is possible. If I’m not paying attention, you might use just about anything to get my attention. Why is that? You love me. You don’t want me to go without hearing from you. That’s true. I want you to hear from me. I want to lead and guide your life. I want to guard and guide you. I want to teach and train you. I want to use your life to bear fruit for my Kingdom and bring glory to my name.

What will hinder or help your ability to hear me speaking to you? Being too busy will hinder me from hearing from you. Allowing my life to be constantly filled with noise will hinder my ability to hear you speaking to me. Thinking that I can bear fruit for your Kingdom with my own gifts, talents, strengths and abilities will make it very difficult for me to hear from you. Why is that? If I am self-centered, self-sufficient and self-reliant it is unlikely that I will ever develop the ability to hear from you. That’s right. I need to constantly remember that apart from you I can do nothing. What do you mean by, “nothing”? I mean that apart from you I can’t do anything that will be of lasting and eternal value. I can’t bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name without relying on you for your help. You got that right.

What will you do differently if you want to hear from me? I will set apart a time and a place to turn aside to meet with you. I will quiet myself before you. I will listen to your voice. I will listen to your instructions. I will follow your guidance. As I continue to meet with you, I know that you will strengthen my ability to hear from you. Just as a muscle needs to be exercised to become strong so also my hearing and seeing needs to be strengthened to notice your activity. You will strengthen my hearing and sharpen my eyes to hear and see your hand at work all around me. Yes, I will. I will look for your activity even in what I might consider to be distractions in life. I will keep my ears open to whatever you want to say to me. That will be very good.

Lord, I will never allow myself to become too busy to listen to you. I will never allow the noise of life to drown out my ability to hear from you. I will make time every day to turn aside to sit and listen to what you want to say to me. Amen

I Will Turn Aside To See

The Sacramental Life – Day 336 – Exodus 3-2-4 – I Will Turn Aside To See – Growing As Disciples

Turn Aside

That does not come naturally to me. That is not something I am in the regular habit of doing. What does no come naturally to you? What are you not in the regular habit of doing? I do not naturally or regularly, set aside what I am doing, to turn aside to notice your activity in my life. More often than not, I am too busy. I am engaged in the activities of life. I am focused on the task at hand. I am preoccupied and distracted by what lies just before me. That is not good. Yes, I know.

What would you like to do differently? What changes will you make in your life so that you can hear from me? I will make hearing from you the priority of my life. I will focus my heart and mind and life on you. I will be watchful and attentive to your activity in my life. How will this be possible? What will assure that this will be true of your life? I will set aside a daily time and place where we can meet together. I will meet with you in prayer. I will meet with you in worship. I will meet with you in your word. I will live in an intimate relationship with you. I will walk through life with you. I will allow you to develop within me the heart of a listener. That will be very good. What do you expect to hear and see from me? I expect that you will lead me to where you want me to go. I expect that you will give me what you want me to do. Beyond that, I can hardly predict what you might say to me. Your words will certainly guard me. Your words will certainly teach and train me. Living in an intimate relationship with you will certainly make me fruitful for your kingdom and make me able to bring glory to your name. So, I will be watching and listening with great expectation and anticipation. It will be my joy to turn aside to be watchful and attentive to your activity in my life. I will listen to you. Be sure of this, I will certainly speak to you as you turn aside to listen to me. Thank you, Lord. That I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not be preoccupied and distracted. I will be watchful and attentive to your activity in my life. I will turn aside to listen to you. You have my full attention. I will listen to you. Refocus and redirect my life. Lead to where to go. Give me what to do. Amen

Key Question…  When are you taking time to turn aside from the activity of your life to listen to God?

Living It Out…  Make it your regular pattern and practice to turn aside to listen to God.

I Will Go Over

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Exodus 3:2-4 - I Will Go Over - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Exodus 3:2-4 – I Will Go Over – Growing As Disciples

There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight–why the bush does not burn up.” When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” Exodus 3:2-4 (NIV)

Stop And Take Notice

Are you watching intently? Are you waiting patiently? Are you looking expectantly? Will you stop and take notice? Will you go over to see what I want to show you? Your questions are rocking my world. You have definitely gotten my attention. How so? I’m wondering if I have been too busy. Have I been unaware? Have I been so consumed by the tasks at hand that I have not been watching and waiting and expectantly looking for your activity in the world around me?  Have I been self-absorbed? Have I not been looking up or around to see what you wanted to show me? Have I not been listening? If I need to ask these questions, then the answers are obvious. Help me Lord, to see what you want me to see. Help me Lord, to hear what you want me to hear. Help me Lord, to do what you want me to do. Those are all good prayers.

How will be ready to watch intently and wait patiently and looking expectantly for my activity in the world all around you? How will you hear what I want you to hear? How will you see what I want you to see? How you know to go where I send you? How will know to do what I ask of you? You’re asking me those questions? Yes, I am. Those are questions that I want to ask you. Without your help, I will not see. Without your help, I will not hear. Without your help, I will not know where to go or what to do for you. That’s true. So, I will hear and see because I will come to rely on you. So, I will know where to go and what to do because I will wait for your instructions and follow your guidance. I will rely on you to make me able to go and do all that you ask of me. I will not run ahead. I will not lag behind. I will not turn to the right or to the left. I will follow you. That is how I will hear and see all that you want to show me. That is how you will make me able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. That’s right. Will you rely on my help? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will not be distracted. I will not be preoccupied. I will not be unaware. I will be looking and watching and waiting expectantly to see your activity. I will stop what I’m doing. I will go over to see whatever you want to show me. I will listen attentively to you. Amen
