Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Exodus 3:2-4 – I Will Go Over – Growing As Disciples

There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight–why the bush does not burn up.” When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” Exodus 3:2-4 (NIV)

Stop And Take Notice

Are you watching intently? Are you waiting patiently? Are you looking expectantly? Will you stop and take notice? Will you go over to see what I want to show you? Your questions are rocking my world. You have definitely gotten my attention. How so? I’m wondering if I have been too busy. Have I been unaware? Have I been so consumed by the tasks at hand that I have not been watching and waiting and expectantly looking for your activity in the world around me?  Have I been self-absorbed? Have I not been looking up or around to see what you wanted to show me? Have I not been listening? If I need to ask these questions, then the answers are obvious. Help me Lord, to see what you want me to see. Help me Lord, to hear what you want me to hear. Help me Lord, to do what you want me to do. Those are all good prayers.

How will be ready to watch intently and wait patiently and looking expectantly for my activity in the world all around you? How will you hear what I want you to hear? How will you see what I want you to see? How you know to go where I send you? How will know to do what I ask of you? You’re asking me those questions? Yes, I am. Those are questions that I want to ask you. Without your help, I will not see. Without your help, I will not hear. Without your help, I will not know where to go or what to do for you. That’s true. So, I will hear and see because I will come to rely on you. So, I will know where to go and what to do because I will wait for your instructions and follow your guidance. I will rely on you to make me able to go and do all that you ask of me. I will not run ahead. I will not lag behind. I will not turn to the right or to the left. I will follow you. That is how I will hear and see all that you want to show me. That is how you will make me able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. That’s right. Will you rely on my help? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will not be distracted. I will not be preoccupied. I will not be unaware. I will be looking and watching and waiting expectantly to see your activity. I will stop what I’m doing. I will go over to see whatever you want to show me. I will listen attentively to you. Amen

Appeared To Him In Flames

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Exodus 3:1-3 - Appeared To Him In Flames - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Exodus 3:1-3 – Appeared To Him In Flames – Growing As Disciples

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight–why the bush does not burn up.” Exodus 3:1-3 (NIV)

Go Over

I’m too busy. My life is filled with frantic activity. I am rushing from one thing to another. I am out of breath. I am weary. I am worn out. I am discouraged and depressed. I am bouncing from one meaningless thing to another. What a crooked path I have walked. This is no way to live. I have no priorities. I have no plan. My life consists of checking off boxes on a never ending to do list. What a mess. Would I ever be able to hear you if you wanted to say something to me? Would I ever be able to see something that you wanted to show me? Is that a question? Yes, that is my question. You tell me. I doubt it. Me too.

You want to lead a different kind of life, I can see that. I can see your sighing. I can hear your groaning. It’s like you are running a treadmill that is going nowhere, without any end in sight. You want to hear from me. You want to see my activity. You want to live in an intimate relationship with me. You want your life to be guided and directed by me. You want to go where I guide you. You want to do what I ask of you. You want to stop walking a crooked path. You want your life to have meaning and purpose and direction. You want to live the life that I have called you to live. You want to live a life that is pleasing to me. Is that right? Yes, you have expressed exactly what I need and want. I want to know you. I want to live out your purposes and plan for my life. That’s good.

It’s time to stop running. It’s time to start listening. It’s time to focus your heart and mind and life on me. How can I begin to do that? You need turn aside from the noise and busyness of life. You need to go over to see what I want to show you. You need to go over to hear what I want to say to you. Go over? What does that mean? Where will I go? That is up to you. Set aside a special time and sacred place to meet with me. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. Listen to me and I will speak to you. Focus your heart and mind and life on me and I will show you all that I want you to see. Do you understand? Yes, you want me to leave the noise and busyness of my daily life by going over to meet with you at our special time and place. That’s right. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have allowed my life to become far too busy. I’m sure that I have raced right by what you wanted me to see. I have not heard you above the noise of my busy life. Help me to slow down to see your activity. Help me to be quiet so that I can hear from you. Amen
