And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, Colossians 1:10 (NIV)
Pleasing Him
What kind of life would you find pleasing and how can I live it? That’s a very good question. You tell me the answer. I was hoping that you would tell me. Yes, I know. I think it pleases you to know that I want to live a life that pleases you. It does. I’m not asking you that question out of some idle curiosity. I know. I really do want to live a life that pleases you. I can see that.
I’m sure that a lot of self-effort on my part is not what you want from me. I don’t think that would please you. Why do you say that? I don’t think you want me to be at the center of our relationship. I don’t. So, I think it pleases you that I ask you a lot of questions. It does. But, tell me more about why you think that. You want me to rely on you. I do. Asking you a lot of questions lets you know that I know that I don’t have all the answers. That’s very good. A pride filled self-reliant and self-sufficient life is not pleasing to you. No, it’s not.
What happens to you when you come to me to ask me a lot of questions? We talk together. I listen to you. I spend time in your presence. I come to know you. I learn your will and your ways. I begin to understand your purposes and plans. What else? As I spend time in your presence I am being changed. What is changing about you? You are changing my heart and transforming my mind. You are making me to be more like you. Yes, I am. I’m sure that it pleases you that I am becoming more like you. It does. There is one very big thing that I forgot to mention. It’s the most important part of spending time in your presence. What’s that? As I spend time in your presence I am growing to love you more and more every day. I’m sure that it pleases you to know that I love you with all my heart and mind and soul. Yes, it does. Today, I know that it only seems like I love you with all my heart and mind and soul. Why do you say that? I know that I will love you more tomorrow than I do today. Are you sure? If I keep coming to you every day I am positive that I will know and love you more and more every day. Yes, you will.
What will you do as you come to know and love me? I will desire to do what pleases you. I will look and listen for ways to serve you. I will go where you send me to do what you ask of me. Yes, you will. I will be like a tool in your hands that you can use. That’s right. I will bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and glory. Yes, you will. Is that what you want? Yes Lord, it is. That pleases me.
Lord, it is my desire to know, love and serve you more everyday. I want my life to honor you in every way. Help me to live my life in ways that please you. Use my life to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and your glory. Amen
