Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Psalm 62:1-2 – Rest In God Alone – Growing As Disciples

My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 (NIV)

Waiting And Resting

That does not come naturally to me. What does not come naturally to you? Waiting and resting does not come naturally to me. Why is that? I like to be on the move. I want to be on the go. Waiting and resting seems like a waste of time. Waiting and resting feels like I am doing nothing. Nothing could be further from the truth. How so? Let me ask you a few questions. Go ahead, I’m listening. Have you ever raced around to get something done that ended up amounting to nothing? Have you ever quickly gone and done something that ended up not being my will? Have you ever quickly tried to go and do my will without relying on me? I can’t tell how many times I have made all these mistakes. Would you say that not waiting and resting in my presence has caused you to waste a tremendous amount of time? I would agree wholeheartedly with that statement. So, why does waiting and resting seem like a waste of your time. How can you think of waiting and resting as doing nothing? Those are good questions. You have given me something to think about deeply. Obviously, I need to change my thinking. Yes, you do.

Let’s talk more about waiting and resting in my presence. I’d like that. You have already admitted that waiting and resting does not come naturally to you. That’s right. Waiting and resting does not come naturally to anyone. Really? Yes, really. So, with that thought in mind, what must you do? I must carve out a daily time to wait and rest in your presence. I must learn to develop the skill of waiting and resting in you. That’s right.

What do you think you will learn as you wait and rest in my presence? I will learn to rely on you as my fortress. I will come to know that I will not be shaken because you are the rock of my salvation. Yes, you will. What else? I will come to know your will and walk in your ways. I will learn to listen to your instructions and follow your guidance. Yes, you will. What will that mean to you? I will be able to go and do your will. I will receive your power and strength. You will make me able to do all that you ask of me. Yes, I will. Is there something else you now know? The quickest way to knowing and doing your will is coming to wait and rest in your presence. That’s true. That’s right. That’s very good.

Heavenly Father, thank you that I can rest in your presence. You have helped me to step away from the craziness of life to be refreshed, restored, and revived in your presence. You are the rock, fortress and salvation of my life. I will come to rely on you. Amen
