Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Psalm 116:1-2 – Heard My Cry – Growing As Disciples

I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.  Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. Psalm 116:1-2 (NIV)

Heard My Cry

I know that you have heard my cry. I know that you have heard my prayers. I know that it delights you when I come to you to ask you for what I need. It is your joy to hear and answer my prayers. Are questions coming? You know me. Yes, I know you. My questions are more to me than to you. Since I know that you delight to hear from me and it is your joy to hear and answer my prayers, I have a big question for myself. What’s that? Why do I pray so infrequently? Why do I ask for so little? I can’t adequately answer my own question to myself. Here is what I will do. What’s that? I will ask you to fan the flame of prayer in me. Give me prayers to pray. Show me what I need. Give me wisdom to know what I can and should ask of you. Guide my prayers.  I will hear and answer these prayers. Thank you.

We both know what is behind my desire to pray. Yes, we do. But, tell me what is behind your desire to pray. Of all the prayers that I have ever prayed one stands out as the most important. There is a prayer that is in my heart and mind every day of my life. Tell me that prayer. I want to know you. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to hear your voice. I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to walk through life with you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to fully live the life you have called me to live. I want to live a life that is fruitful for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. One day, I want to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” This is what I want and need above all else. This is the highest and most important prayer that I could ever pray. You could not give me anything better than the answer to this prayer. Is there any chance that I will not hear and answer this prayer? No, you will help me to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. You will help me to be faithful. You will hear my cry. You will turn your ear to me. Yes, I will. I will call on you as long as I live. Yes, you will.

Heavenly Father, I have often failed to come to ask you for what I need. What a mistake that has been. I now know that you want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. It is your delight to hear and answer my prayers. So, I will ask you for what I need. Amen
