Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Heart- Hebrews 3:10 – Going Astray – Growing As Disciples

That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ Hebrews 3:10 (NIV)

Time And Place

If I said that I wanted to speak to you would you listen to me? Of course I would listen to you. No really, how attentively would you listen to me? Would you set apart a time and a place to meet with me so that you could hear my voice? Yes Lord, I would set apart a time and a place to meet with you to hear your voice. What would you do if I said I wanted to meet with you everyday? Then I would set a time and a place to meet with you every day. Very good, that’s what I want. I want to speak to you everyday.  So, I will let you set the time and pick the place for us to meet together. Alright then, I will. You’re serious? Yes, I am very serious. So, am I.

What do you think will happen if you don’t hear and listen to my voice? I’m not really sure. Go ahead, take a guess. If I don’t hear and listen to your voice I won’t know you very well. I won’t know your will or your ways. That’s a very good guess, or is it a guess? No, I’m speaking from the voice of experience. The only way that I will really know you is to meet with you, to hear what you want to say to me. That’s right.  So, you intend to meet with me in my word, is that right? Yes, it is.

What else will happen to you if you don’t hear and listen to my voice? There’s more? Yes, there is. Take another educated guess. If I don’t hear and listen to you I will stray away from you. Where will you stray? I will stray off into the world and all that it has to offer. Will the world offer you what will benefit your soul?  No, the world will offer thoughts, values and practices that are very far away from your will and ways. Yes, it will. If you allow yourself to be conformed to the world what will happen to your heart? My heart will begin to enjoy the deceitfulness of sin. I will learn to hate your will and ways once I have tasted of all that the world has to offer.  I will begin to think that your will and your ways are standing in the way of me enjoying myself. What will you really be enjoying? I will be enjoying the pleasures of sin. What are the ultimate wages of sin? Sin brings death both in this life and in the life to come. Yes, it does. You don’t want that. No, I don’t.  I want my heart to be turned toward you.  I want to hear all that you have to say to me. I want to live the life you have given me to live. I want to know you. I want you to know me. That’s very good. So, what are you going to do? I am going to set apart a time and a place to meet with you every day. That will be very good. I’m looking forward to that. So, am I.

Lord, thank you for your word that speaks to me and keeps my heart and mind on you. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me so that I can know your ways and do your will as I enter into your peace and rest. Amen
